Pity the weather wont be helping us. But I WILL BE THERE :)
It's gonna be my first night ride in rain :)

Woot Woot!!!! Well done man, good to see you made it out there! The rain and night is not so bad now is it. Keep dreaming of the Busa and one day you'll get there :niceone:

What you didnt bring any hot chicks in bikinis :innocent:??? was looking foward to see who would wash your :scooter:...maybe next time LOL

 Yeah yeah yeah i second that  nothing like looking at a wet and shiney set of……………… bikes:banana: muwhahahahaha

Glad you could make it also 422. Did you enjoy yourself and learn heaps?

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice last night, it was great!! I think now maybe I should cut off my stupid rear brake pedal as its just second nature to stomp on the thing still. Practice, practice, practice!!!!! and I'll get there in the end! Just a thgought but is it illegal to ride without the rear brake pedal attached? If i take it off then I'll have to get used to using the front more. Any comments if this is a good or bad idea?

Really appreciative that people give up so much time to help out newbs (and not so newbs).

Im hoping to make the run on Sunday - but Ill definitely be there for Wednesday - count me as a regular from now on!:niceone:

Not a good idea at all. By doing this you are sacrificing 25 - 40% of your available braking. Best you just learn how to stop safely.

It is a good idea to see if you can make it a to b without using it, but if the worst happens you need all the friends you can muster.

Hi guys,

Picked up my bike on the weekend and keen to come along this wednesday. Do I need to bring anything special? I've already done a bit of riding since saturday so i'm comfortable enough riding but really need to learn some safety skills.

See you there!

Deeply disconcerting how few people realise that no matter how good you are you can still benefit from practice, especially now that the weather is improving.

I tell ya, no matter how good you think you are, going over the basics like emergency braking can be a life saver, you never know when you are going to need it.
This weekend I had to use it again, first time was a few months ago riding home from this event some twat did a 180 in front of me on the motorway - in the wet. This time I nearly took out myself and several other bikers, coming around a blind bend to a one way bridge, slight lack of attention. My friend in front had stopped and I sailed past her (side ways) locked up, if the motor hadn't of stalled I reckon I would of high sided. I had very little choice in places to go, choices were take out my friend, solid concrete bridge or group of bikers or this very small gap in front of my friend. I released the lock up, aimed for the gap and because I looked there I ended up there. We are talking about stopping within 4-6 bike lengths from 80-90kph.

I gotta stop getting into these situations, is costing me a crap load in underwear lol

If you are on an "unfamilar" bike, thats when you need a safe practice area the most!!
How many people have gone out on a test ride of a shop bike, or worse, a friends bike, and found out how fast it can go before they worked out how fast it can stop??

You don't need a bike to come along. You can still learn something, and pass on your knowledge to others, even if it is at the fib session at the pub afterwards.

Let us know if you still would like to come out and play. I can shoot in and give you a lift out if you like. Pillion skills are good to learn too.

Was a pretty good turn out tonight and believe everyone came away with some new found knowledge.

Tonights exercises was based around U-turns, with the figure eight and slow straight crawls

The debrief (pub afterwards) went off well, and as usually the last part of the evening soon went south with everyone having a good laugh.
I wont mention Big Dog letting off a ripper that cleared everyone out.

Remember this event is for all levels of riders, although targeted at newbies, so I hope to see you (yes you) there next week. We leave Shell Westgate at 7pm

Oh well, at least you can claim it's not your fault,:innocent: just a shit happens thing. Regulator/rectifryer dies and then the alternator cooks the battery. Its very hard to spot unless your riding at night and notice the headlight brightness changing with the revs. (will do it just above idle, but thats normal)

Was another great turn out.
One day I'll count how many there are but if there are more than ten it means taking of my boots and socks ...

As there was a wide range of experience levels there last night there was a lot of exercises to keep everyone happy.
Counter steering through a coned course, the continuous 8's or the flower thingy, and also thread the needle which is basically control of the bike before and after a tight corner. Want to know more about these? then come along.

Thanks to all involved

More interesting than last night?

At the debrief (at the cool table) we had Busys 'unusual cramps', someone (who shall remain nameless) who had problems separating Gentle and Genital, and two ladies playing with Busys pectoral implants.:pinch:

From Big Dog and Mack....

The AWMNR tonight will be held entirely indoors at Bar Africa, with a stimulating evening of trivia and humour, attendance is desired from around 7.30pm, just enough time for the really brave souls to ride from Westgate to the Pub!

Come one come all, it should be at least as much fun as last time we did this.

I didn't expect this..... lol
Well we had fun with Bruce and Busy :)

I must admit the dirty dancing with the poles and even a small attempt on the table was set for a hysterical night....Fluid coming out of noses, Babies falling out of planes, Sumo resulting in a plane oh don’t forget the dead cop in bruce's bed lol.... Naked old people, Sumo riding a push bike, and so much more....
I was a night inside but a good laugh for those that stuck it out we actually learnt allot :gob: may not have been about riding but learning is learning no matter what the subject is (or who)

Unfortunately the baby wasn't really a baby but a pet monkey who didn't wear nappies, his mother wasn't really his mother but a retired Army Sargent that spoke in a high voice. The plane was not really a plane but a bus, and the seat number wasn't really 47 but the seats 4 and 7 put next to each other. The tazor was not a tazor but a banana, it was used to harm people but Bruce wore the brunt of it. His mother was not deaf but did live in the cupboard, she saw everything and once the book is released, plans on coming out of the closest ...

Fortunately that could be the end of the story ;)

And also Fortunately, we all know this story will live again on another evening when the fire burns low and the alcohol is plentiful.

Not the place to say this... but I dont care. ....lets just say Disco Dan is no longer 'Desperate Dan' but "Taken Dan". ...likes bikes, great tits.. oh and shes my boss (at work). mwuahahaha.... ...seriously.

I think it is the right time to say this: I have been running AWNMR with the help of some great mentors for a while now, however it has metamorphasized into something that no longer reflects my inital vision. This is a shame (for me) but like everything in life - things change. It appears to be catering to the new riders that are currently attending and I have been watching from a distance. Even making apperances at the practice area from a distance. Now is the time to publicly and offically hand over the runnings to the KB mentors - Macktheknife & BigDog: You have given so much to AWNMR and taken nothing, your expertise and experience has in my opinion, already potentially saved lifes and given new riders valuable skills and learnings. I hope you will continue this venture that started when I myself was a 'newbie' and I saw a need for such training. And also a big thank you to all the other KB mentors and outside mentors that have given their precious time for such a good cause - Thank you.

I wish you all the best in your quest for knowledge and I will try and stop by from time to time when commitments allow.

Good luck, and ride safe.

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1247159&postcount=1

:niceone:

Duly noted.

There is a strong possibility that there will be some Bikers lurking around talking bikes and bike technique, skills etc.
There is also a high probability that there is likely to be some exercises intended to be demonstrated to allow you to practice on your own time.

I urge all those who wish to participate in said discussion to be at Shell Westgate at 6:45pm or Albany Megacentre from 7:30pm.

Please note:
1: I do not know anything about the changes that have been mentioned. Please be supportive of the changes whatever they may be.
I am sure that the motivation for the mods to make them is not anything other than a will to make things better.

2: This is not a substitute for professional tuition, a supplement at best.

3: Decisions made by the participants of the Wednesday night ride are not at the direction of and are not the liability of Kiwibiker.co.nz.

about 250ks worth of riding I believe. Be careful not to brake overly hard for the first few ks then do a few hard brakes to a stop then carry on etc. Will be fine after that (full brake capacity) - properly bed in after 250k though.

Don't know about the 250kms thing.
I have always been told ride about 2 km gently to give you a chance to get the feel right given that you will feel pfaff all resistance first couple of goes, as soon as they feel normalish give them death.
2 - 3 normal stops from 60. (Get you up to speed.)
2 - 3 normal stops from 100. (Get the machine warm and reliable)
Unless you actually have an emergency or a legal reason too such as a red light try not to come to a complete stop from here on down.
2 - 3 urgent near stops from 60. Don't move on till you can smell the pads.
2 - 3 urgent near stops from 100. This can be quite scary.
2 - 3 emergency near stops from 60.
All bedded in.

The more aggressive you can make the near stops the better your pads will bed and I am told the longer they will live.
Did this with mine about 600 kms ago. By golly but the previous person to break in my brakes needs a hiding. After that lot if anything I need less brakes than ever before.

The reason for the near stops is not something I am good at explaining but it has to do with brake dust, heat and possibly warping discs. Or if the stop is too long glazing the discs / pads.

i am ok,broken mirror + indicators which can be replaced.....

but now bike wont start. plenty of juice in the batteries but it just wont start. had a go at bang starting it but still no dice. any ideas?? the bike kinda turned itself off while it was on its side so it could be fuel/carbs or something. or throttle cable broke?? i really want to get it sorted before next wednesday for my license test.....

thanks

Kill switch? Very common after a low speed prang to spend a while trying to start a bike that is turned off.

just leave it till morning...itll prob fire up then..... bikes sometimes wont start for 2-3 mins of winding over after a drop.....otherwise perhaps a wire to a coil has come off? ive had that happen before just check it over....also check the sidestand or clutch killswitch hasnt been munted if u usually need to hold the clutch in or have the sidestand up to start it.

How the hell? Man... Well I got similar story to tell.

BAD NEWS (not as bad as Carbacca)

I dropped my bike

The end

your bikes easy to fix....chewing gum and superglue, after all thats how it came from factory :done:

oh well it started alright just now. so all i really need its mirror + indicators and i'll be back on the road. thanks (or no thanks) to the grass there was no fairing damage, just a bit of wet grass clipping and a spot of mud on the brake lever. mirrors and indicators are on their way from korea.

back to the training....was definitely a worthy and good night training, makes me realise i am crap at low speed handling. will try and make the next one if i am back on the road by then

Sorry to hear this guys but it's good your both ok and not damaged except for a few replaceable bits of plastic and metal on your rides. EJ i saw you riding last night in the group heading to Albany, when did you have your wee incident and did you choke on your muesli bar on the way over :bleh::bleh:

Don't know about the 250kms thing.
I have always been told ride about 2 km gently to give you a chance to get the feel right given that you will feel pfaff all resistance first couple of goes, as soon as they feel normalish give them death.
<snip> After that lot if anything I need less brakes than ever before.

The reason for the near stops is not something I am good at explaining but it has to do with brake dust, heat and possibly warping discs. Or if the stop is too long glazing the discs / pads.

:niceone: Thanks BigDog!! (and also DD and McDuck) sort of how i was doing it anyway but i have been doing it more times than a couple each and was aiming for the 250km while doing these things as per DD suggestion. I'm sure they are bedded in fine now thanks to the info from all of you guys, cheers :apint:

It seems that there was a good turn out for the ride last night in the group riding from westgate anyway. i was heading back home from adding some kms to the brakes and taking my flatmate out for his first pootle when we saw you all at the bush road lights and gave you all a wave :msn-wink:good to see a few more hardy souls practicing

Last night, although rather windy there were 9 bikes in attendance. The rain even held out until after.

The evening started off with a pre riding safety check, advising what to check before a ride, what to look for and how ... safety first!
The cones did blow around a little bit but allowed several events, including a slow speed slalom, emergency stopping (with a difference), and for an encore a race - a slow slow speed race with all bikes involved (slowest wins) was fun.

No bins on the actual event, but two after? take it easy guys, remember two of the most common times to have a bin, well three are within the first 1/2 hour of rain, within a mile from home and when showing off to the opposite sex

Just remember folks, the weather conditions, no matter how bad can actually work in your favor as each type of weather conditions have their own styles, methods with tips and tricks.

Hope to see you there next week

this has been your unofficial summary, brought to you by the letter b and the number 2 :D and the answer for number 6 of the trivia night we kind of crashed for a few questions was the sax

It didn't rain while we were at the car park (did before), but the evening was spent discussing tips and tricks for riding in the wind and wind gusts, riding positions ... even how stable the bike is when parked and best angles to park on slopes etc

No matter how good or bad the weather there is always something new to learn.

Indeed, however we need to see where things are going or not re mentoring before we change the post.
E.G not officially mentoring.

Nights go ahead either way.

A few beers need to be consumed, and chins need to be waged before we can go ahead with changing anything. This is still a democracy run by the attendees.
Especially if Mods are going to merge the thread any way.
Perhaps you could talk to a mod about getting ownership of the first post changed if you want to not be involved anymore?

There were about 8 or 10 bikes last night, the weather was great.
I thought a couple of folks had dressed up for Halloween but turns out they always look like that ;)

With the motorway cutter protest ride coming up on Saturday, and the fact we ride in a group from WestGate to Albany the topic of the night was pack/group riding. Started off in the car park (without the bikes) which was basically a practical theory, then the road trip ... learning what, where, when and how amongest other things
Afterwards, heading to the pub we were lead by the mighty scooter (wont mention any names) giving everyone an uncontrolled route (because no one knew where we were going) which also lent to the nights lessons.

A big thanks to all those involved, a special thanks to Whitebelt for getting us back safe, and to Littleman for him to leave his brand new bike on the side of the road to help another bike (whom he thought was in trouble but wasn't, sorry dude).

Remember folks, you never stop learning so hope to see YOU there next Wednesday - rain or shine
