To elaborate.
The above is basically correct, but there are some buts and gotchas.
If you let go at the front and rear at the same time, as a push, staying on the gas and or gently raising the amount of horses being whipped is your only real hope.
You may of course also need to make corrections in body position or steering angle to ride it out, these need to be slight and smooth.
Should you back off or use the brakes you will meet the pavement on one side or the other.
You may still come off under power, but at least it will be lowside which generally hurts less.
If you have locked the brakes you need to come off them first.
Often this will result in a headshake.
The reason you were braking at that point will determine your next move.
Coming in to a corner too hot?
You will probably have to commit to the corner and hope your bike is better than you are a rider.
Coming in to a corner too hot and there is an alternate exit such as a driveway?
You may be better to stand it up and ride it out.
There was an emergency in a corner?
Only you can answer that depending on the evidence in front of you.
Emergency on a straight no other exits?
Straighten up and re apply the brakes is probably the best, scrub off as much speed as you can before you hit the hazard at least. A sliding tyre does little to slow you down. Maximum braking is where it is screaming and or smoking but still gripping (the combination will be different on different tyres).
Emergency on the straight and there is an exit? Let go of the brakes and give it some welly is probably the best bet.
The less load you have on the front tyre the less likely that tyre is to be the mechanism of spitting you off.
If your still reading you will have noticed that some of this is a little vague?
This is because there are no perfect answers and there are no definites other than if someone says they are on the perfect bike or a perfect rider they are definitely wrong.
The only way to stand a chance of recovery is to have done your drills when it is not an emergency and to have luck on your side.
Every response to every circumstance changes given the current evidence.
Where was your exit?
Has it really gone?
Is there a better one?
Do nothing get hurt, do something you might still get hurt.
The other week I did something and still got hurt. But I was still trying to save it when I hit the deck.
Big Dog
27th May 2008, 13:33

Sometimes there isn't.
Sometimes the best course of action is to mitigate as much as possible.
Hitting a parked car is bound to hurt less than falling in front of a speeding truck.
Sometimes we need to accept that we have gone beyond the limits of our bike and body and look to do the least harm.
Never say die, make the most of every choice you have... but recognise when you are fucked and take the road less fucked.
Kittyhawk
27th May 2008, 15:40
i have to agree...when i binned it was 50% my fault for following too close to the rider in front and 50% with a speeding truck coming too hot into a corner on a back country road. thus means i was riding about 10% outside my riding limit and did not allow room for error.
had 3 options there..
1 - heavily brake and slam my bike into the ass of the busa in front
2 - go right miss her but clip the oncoming truck
3 - go left and avoid the truck miss the bike and try recover
everything happened in slow motion at a mild 70km/hr, i took option 3 went off road just missing the bank laid the bike down and slid. Think there were 6 other bikes behind so I did run the risk of getting hit, but with my motor x skills naturally kicking in i didnt do alot of damage to me or the bike. got up was checked over waited for bike to start and it was back on the road to the pub.
i have had so many bins off road that road riding dosent scare me and that is a dangerous headspace right there. its normal to feel adrenline when you have a close call, to have second thoughts about that tight corner you are approaching etc..
tip of the day ride within your limits and check to make sure you have the ability to recover, if you have gone outside you limits and something happens try your best to recover. dont follow busas on back roads with speeding trucks lol

You did fine...LOL You were in good hands mate, couple of nurses around to make sure you would be fine. What actually impressed me about your bin (the photo does not do it justice really) was the fact that you managed to stay upright for that long, under brakes, riding right on the edge of that drain! Now that was skills indeed, scrubbing off speed so the landing was not as hard as it could have been!

Speaking of knee down, you sold your GN before getting the elusive "knee down" on it! Now you'll never be able to say "I got my knee down on the GN" (unless you do it on the CC Challenge, of course).

It is with a heavy heart that I make this post but make it I must.
Until further notice I will not be attending the Wednesday night ride.
At this time I cannot ask people to follow advice that I am currently unable to follow myself. Until I have resolved my issues around riding / confidence / skills it would be hypocritical for me to be offering advice of this sort.
I will not participate in any further on line discussion in this matter. I ask that you don't either. I will return when I am ready. If someone else has taken the mantle I will be returning as their assistant for so long as they wish to lead.

Your advise has made a huge differnace to the way i ride and givin me skills i know i will use for the rest of my days riding. There is also the fact that without you advice i would have had a much worse off than i did when that car hit me.
I think i can confidently say that you and you advice will be sorly missised.

Take care:love:

Whoa.. most organised AWNR ever!
As the great Bob Dylan said "Things have changed"
Shall definately have to pop by tommorow (as if I wasn't going to anyway). Taking a sickie off work cause I've worked the past 11 days and don't get a break till Saturday, so i'll be going for a ride during the day anyway to err.. warm my tyres.

Ask any experienced rider if they would pillion in general, answer is always no. Why? because they have to be in control, if a rider tips in and pillion sees and think its a wrong line he/she will naturally try correct it and lean the other way.
Problem is Ive only pillioned twice in the wet, both bad experiences. First time was on the back of my gixer and we were lucky not to have lost it in twisties, second time the rider thought hed impress me by doing 230km/hr in the wet on the northern motorway. Then threw the bike around some twisties out west.
So no, for me its a trust and headspace thing. If I cant trust the rider in the wet then it would lead to disaster.

And who is going to brave the weather? Kitty cats dont like the wet but will anyone else be there or will it be like the last time it rained and only 4 brave souls pitted there bikes and will against mother nature.
I was soooo gutted to have missed last weeks run, the misses came up with the lame excuse of something to do with the fact she hadn't seen me in 10 ten days or some such thing?... I know it must be a chick thing:dodge:

Someone got out in the wet today on the back of a bike, my brain cell has been reassured.
Couple of grumbly points on Riverhead guys....
* Stick together tail end charlie sometimes gets left behind. Put a more experienced rider at the back if no mentos available.
* NO racing on the straights and especially take offs at intersections - easy and tempting but lets keep it safe.
* No egos please - we are there to have fun, learn new things and have a good night *coughs young male riders *
ok rant over ;)
