And still you make fun of THE BIKE even as you learn more and more about it's most practical features.

Yep: Good Pilot Steering.

Yeah I am sure i could fabricate something up... A quick thought was rear demister wire from a car. They run 12v. Make up a little box with the wires working like oven elements, top and bottom. Would need an on off switch so you could time the cook time then turn off, pull over and eat..

Hhhmm this seems like a cool project...

might be onto something there ,will have to brainstorm at the coffee stop on the ride eh

Might be needing this when petrol breaks the $2 a litre mark.

I think I'd be looking at some kind of Latte machine that runs off the exaust header and coffee grinder that runs off the rear wheel. If you get the quality right youd have pleanty of customers. Possibly enough to finance the ride.

Plan: :scooter:

Awake early to a nice sunny day!:sunny:
Palmy crew meet at BP Rangatiki @ 07:50 for 08:00 start.
Quick stop other side of Wanagnui to pick up Hornet250Boy. No time for pies or coffee - you've only been on the bike an hour...
Arrive Stratford somewhere around 10:30 (maybe a tad earlier).
Gas & coffee, plus meet up with any naki & Waikato riders
Hit the highway
Lunch in Whanga
Head on to Tamarunui then Turangi for gas.
Quick stop at Flat Hills or Mangaweka for a coffee.
Vinegar Hill & home.:Police:Important stuff:

Have fun but take it easy - don't want any mishaps!:calm:
Careful on the gravel - no roosting!:argh:
If you want to stop for photos anywhere on the Forgotten Highway go for it - you won't be the only one.:yes:That's enough of that waffle, see you there! :soon:

I rode one a couple of years ago when the Blue Bandito was looking for his 2nd bike (ended up with the 750F instead - dead now) and was quite surprised how well it went. Didn't have to be too hard on it to get it to go - nice little sport-tourer.

A good illustration as to why you have to be careful on those back roads...

I sold my gsx600f at 107,000km earlier this year. They are good bikes for touring on. I did the 4 points on mine last year wearing a backpack. Had an awesome time.

Talking to a guy who lived there anther guy had an even more serious off there on the same crap the week before.

I think that that is Mangaone Road out the back of Halcome. Apparently the sheep farmer runs his sheep across the road all the time and they drag crap across the road all the time. I'm certainly a lot more careful through there now...

Just got a PM from Sassie1 about road conditions up where we're headining, see below:

Hi there, just a quick note to let you know they put some pretty big sharp gravel down on some of the unsealed bits of the road. We went through a couple of weeks ago and one lady came off and broke her leg, a guy with a brand new FJR 1330 lost his bike when he had to move over to let a car through. My other 1/2 has a Honda 1300 Pan European and it was hard to guide through. Just be aware that's all. Bye Sal.

Thanks for that! :2thumbsup

Sweet - looks like we'll be stopping at the Shell then.

Blindfold Al when you get there, they have nice coffee,or else subway over the road, yoou'll never get him going if he spies two coffee outlets.

Also as a thought with the bbq being used, perhaps we should all throw in a couple of bucks each and get a feed of chips from the pub, especially as we will also need drinks, best we don't upset the owners by having a bbq next to the pub.

Spied a new vtr 1000 in Stratford dealer looked nice, then went helmet hunting today and saw a couple of nice 05 suzi 1200 bandits, new 1250 one and sv1000 in Hawera, not badly priced the used ones either, and low km,also saw gsx1400,not a bad selection for an area which is predominately rural.

Was a great scheme that one,no sense in upsetting the man in charge,he'll be grumpy as hell when we turn up,especially if he has to work. And can't join in.lol.

Afew weeks ago I met a couple of guys just about to go out to the pub, asked them where they had come from, they left Ashburton the day before and left Levin that day, commented they knew the publican and was their midlife annual holiday crisis tour.

Nice day alright, many many thanks for bbq,a bit over the top with lettuce lol, onions nice too.Hope the donation covered the cost, was appreciated by us 2 fellows.

Had a beer at Stratford on way back, got home and mowed the lawns how bad is that.Met a couple at beer stop who we saw last week in Hawera doing the Naki thing, went to Tawhiti museum and impressed, well worth the look people, even have cafe for those who need one(Alistair?).

Rapt that my pillion was brilliant, not bad for someone who has gone 30km at most before,190 km return and only the odd tap, mostly when the helmet would lift, will suss out a new one.Well done to both rider and pillion,I think I've converted a non believer,so much better when she can come and not stay at home.

Can't wait till next weeks toy ride.

Looked at my pics not bad but dial up is soooo sloooow, impressed with new camera,so now have to look at manuel to see how to work it properly.Got a few like Jans' from up the hill, glad to see all arrived safe, can't believe I never saw a police car, mind you think I saw a mufti xr6 red,but not sure, the damn wind got up wicked from Strathmore saddle to home, very gusty between Eltham to Hawera.

Will check fuel consumption which wasn't bad,not into red zone yet and being two up,plus the hills was pretty good.

Only other low point I could add to 86's are Lees Ducati in the early stages of shaking itself to pieces(metal fatigue)

Unfortunately all my pictures of the day are low resolution as I forgot reset the size.

Had a good little excursion on my own after missing the turnoff to Tamuranui and got a double dose of gravel riding. Have to figure out where I went later.

1/Hornets new Suzuki Katana 600
2/Lee trying to fit the Ducs indicator to his head

5/Turangi stop

As a thought about next ride and staying at the pub.How about if you leave say 8.30,go out to Whanga, but as they are pretty full up bed wise, carry on to the next cafe(for Al),ride back to Stratford and up to the mountain and stay in Hawera at Furlong (can get bulk booking)if 20 or so Sat night, next day can go around the coast to Manaia,up to Dawson Falls, return and carry onto Opunake, then cruise to NP,or head back home from Opunake.

Can store all the bikes at our place,5mins walk from Furlong. And have brekky bbq before heading off. Will clean the pool maybe if needed.

Only problem with it is you travel to and from Palmy on sh3.

We do have a few other areas instead of Whanga,Patea dam site has two entrances to visit,i.e upper or lower areas, both twisty roads like forgotten highway.

Just an option for late jan early feb or whenever.

Made it safely home without rear brakes but missed out vinegar hill and 86 arrived 1m before me, perfect timing:yes:

Well the brakes are a little more sick than we at first thought:crybabe: your words are prophetic as always tony !!!

Somewhere I have shed a brake pad and the calliper has shredded and wrecked the inside of the disc too, it was hard to get off and will need to order new calliper, disc and pads in the morning (going to hurt methinks):frown:

Could have been worse, could have been the front. It is fixable and nobody hurt. Good practice for engine braking but some hairy downhill moments. SK1PY gets up some momentum that's for sure.

t'was a good day out. I was coming then wasnt then was then wasnt so pleased I did.

Ride up was a comfortable pace following Banditrider. GPS read 2:06 with an 11 min stop, 101.39km moving average but batteries went flat in Stratford. The servo wanted $14 for 2 AA batteries so the GPS got thrown in the pack and not used again.
Forgotten highway was in fantastic condition. Running new tyres and had some unfavourable reports about the MEz4s but can confirm they did the job just nicely. Only had one slip on the wet tar all day and that was in Taumarnui with everyone watching. Bugger.
86 set a fantastic pace through from Taumarnui to Turangi. Fabulous time but had a bit of waiting to do at the end of it. Certainly put a smile on my face though. Cheers for that.
The ride home was pacey but fairly sedate with 2 police on the desert road, one was busy with a 70 something woman (dont believe what they tell you about old people, she was probably doing 105) and the other ignored us but had me a little nervous when the pulled over to the shoulder.
Didnt get the ks for the day, must have been 650 or so surely.

Well a fantastic day weather, lunch, scenery and company. Thanks Racer and Janno for feeding us and to all for making the ride a pleasure:2thumbsup:
I never thanked Racer and Janno for the BBQ in my short writeup but you know we really appreciated it. Thanks heaps guys.

This is why I quoted. WTF??? Where, how, why did the brake pad go? At worst the pad could have been sitting against the disc but without any brake fluid it shouldnt have been able to press against the disc to do any damage. What does the calliper shredded mean?
Is the disc scuffed up or has it welded metal "blobs" (yes that is my official term for it) to the disc? Would like to have a look at it. Sounds a bit weird.

Could have been worse, could have been the front. It is fixable and nobody hurt. Good practice for engine braking but some hairy downhill moments. SK1PY gets up some momentum that's for sure.

Hope your Honda soon feeling perky too Bonez, poor girls had a bit of a day!!

Yes. Not a good day for the hondas huh.

She's a mess alright! The inner brake pad is completely missing and the inner aluminium caliper has been almost completely ground away. The rest has embedded itself into the disc rotor. Ugly, and the caliper is totally rooted! The caliper is out, come over when you can and check it out!

as usual; a great day and a great bunch of people, thanks to all who came along and banditrider for getting organised

too much to tell.....(as always)

cruisey pace to Stratford, great road to Whangamomona but was quite hard work 2-up so backed of the pace a little to compensate for the bumpy road surface

really enjoyed Whangamomona to Taumarunui, had a ball with some green bike til I decided to pass him, but I think he was just being nice - it was the way he was yawning, looking at the sky and riding no-hands that gave it away:lol:
then got a serious wriggle on trying to chase down another splendiferous RF900 (great to see two of them out there aye Boob) mrs yod is a legendary pillion and from Whanga home it really showed....

seemed to have a certain thundering duke on my tail for a large portion of the ride:niceone: great views from the lookout between Taumarunui and Turangi

some nice smooth lines to follow from that green bike (again!) on the desert road twisties, then a certain gold beast joined the fray, seemingly from nowhere I might add, and we 'made haste' for Taihape, those two really are great chaps to follow when 'making haste' (although the green and gold theme is a little bit australian when ya think about it:eek:).....

Seems they were on a 5 day ? outing up Taranaki / Waikato. We were quite pleased we had our food already :)
Several more groups turned up too who were part of the Norton Owners Club ?? weekend happening back towards Stratford.
First time through the Forgotten H/way. Thought it was an awesome ride. Rates up there with The Takaka Hill down South Island and the Milford road, East Cape Coro Loop, Waipoua Forest... All them but better!

Was so close to joining you guys for the other half of the trip but kinda glad I didn't as the hip starting getting quite sore on the way home so im guessing if I had gone all the way round the last leg from PN to NP would of been hell.

Oh the joys of having a busted hip care of a thoughtless cager :weep:

Only saw two highway patrols all day (other than the X8500 goin nuts with a laser alert on the Whanga road with no cop car.......weird). The first was @ Mokau cruising past while we were in a cafe enjoying a bite to eat & the 2nd a lil further down the road but he had his hands full with a cager (the HORROR )

Funniest part of the day? Well would have to be the HD rider we were talking to at Mokau, I complimented him on his bike, twas chattin away (as ya do), he goes on to say "yeah she does 140 round corners n that & can do 200 mile an hour"...............when nodroj (Kev) says "um you mean kilometers???"

It was at that point Kev turns around in an attempt to stop pissing himself laughing lol

He turns & gives me a nudge as he walks away lol

Well thanks everyone, especially the bbq team and the ride organiser...

I had a great time on this ride.

Heading to Stratford from palmy was a little on the boring side with straight roads but having many other bikes there helped with that.

Once on the forgotten highway then the fun began. Followed the fat arsed RF900 as the lines YOD was taken made for a comfy ride for me, untill I wanted a little more so had to scoot past....

Got caught out once I hit the melted tar, I thought it would be sticky and grippy but nope, more like slippery and smooth. I did however like the gravel section, the Duc has nice wide bars so wasn't so bad at all. Sat as far foward as I could and let the back end do what it wanted, almost felt like I was on a motorcross bike for a while there.

The ride down to Vinegar hill from Turangi was great, 4 different brands of bike, 4 different colours of bike making rather good time. really enjoyed that. The following Meanie through the vinegar hill section was a bloody good idea of mine as I don't knwo the road to well but figured meanie did.. Other than running wide on a couple of corners it was a blast...

Thanks again everyone

Sarah/AL hope you get that caliper issue sorted, if you need a hand gimme a yell.

Bonez old chap, hope the body ain't too sore from your bin. Good to see you back upright so quick.

Ok now my indicator issue. Thanks for pointing that out Meanie, I wouldn't have noticed. Have rewired it this morning and just have to make a new bracket to fit it to the bike.... NOT MY HEAD GARY!!!! Hadn't noticed you taking that pic lol...

This is weirder than an alien abduction eh! It may have been due to massive overheating which has 'welded' the aluminium caliper to the disc and allowed the inner pad to be flung out somewhere on the road. Just need to get a set of pads and she'll be up and running again!

Well, without getting into a huge speil about it lets just say driving it half way through the gorge was more than enough for me, taking into consideration it was obviously going to have limitations it was shocking, it would be far to easy for me to get myself into serious trouble corning on that bike.
It really upset the bike when you grounded the pegs too.
I think the Concours was wise choice.

Edit: Long rides are'nt a problem, long stints in the seat at one time is the problem. Can do 7-800k without to many probs if there are plenty of "ciggie" breaks

That is a mess AL. Looks like the pins have dissapeared allowing the pad to fall out, then with every brake application, the caliper has been forced against the disc. Old age could be the suspect. It is ratgher messy though.

That is a mess AL. Looks like the pins have dissapeared allowing the pad to fall out, then with every brake application, the caliper has been forced against the disc. Old age could be the suspect. It is ratgher messy though.

Will see what I can do for padsThat type of calilper doesn't have pins Lee. The pads have protrutions which sit on the top of the caliper mount with a raised piece in the centre of the backing plate. Like item -3547 and -3546 on this page-

http://www.oldbikebarn.com/motorcycle_parts.php?bike=&subcategory=Brakes%20-%20Rear&universal=Universal

-3546 is also for the CX front disk caliper I gave Sarah. Basicly similar calipers but the breed nipple and bango bolt positions are reversed.

Manawatu m/cs in Josaph Street stock them. Just take in the left over one to compare with. Also I've got a couple of well worn examples if needed.

[COLOR=yellow]Damn straight! They go alright but I had a few issues on the hot tar, I think you were up my date when a had a good squiggle at one stage and then after you passed I took it a bit more easy. Don't like the idea of trying to pull the bike out of a fence...Yeah twas me, at that stage I was feeling rather aggressive & loving the roads so passed everyone, a real nice blend of (posted) 50/60ish km/h corners, damn what a magic bit of road. Yeah that tar in places was a lil tacky alright, I never had any issues as whenever I spotted it I button off a few notchs, im the same mate not keen on finding the absolute limitations of either my bike or my riding :oi-grr:

More most likely ;). Good excuse for a repaint in the near future. Got a couple of indicators today (only needed one but thought a second would come in handy). Got a spare mirror and sorted out a headlight assy from the spares box, ahem garage. So Gerble will be on a WOF condition in no time. I'll keep and eye out on Trademe as I have a cunning plan that you could pin a tale on and call it a weasel.

If it was a Bronze Metalflake (thats a colour) Fastback he ground the spring off his sidestand on a corner, had to stop to electrical tie it up before it turned into a pole vault. If it was someone else i would be keen to know about it.
Some of these things do go and go - one of our group was on a 197? Bonnevile (Triumphs are tolerated) which has done 90,000 miles :eek5: since the head was last off.
