Only if you let it... and its mostley in the head, get used to the bike moving benieth you, use uper body weight to corner, shingle is readable and only an issue if you make it.
I'm assuming the shingle on the Akaroa hill is still pretty bad. Anyone been that way in the last few days?
No its fine, rode it last Friday... was very hot so the fresh tar was soft, by now it wont be an issue.

Myself and Spuds went out 'practising' night riding last night...
...okay, it was more an excuse to go for a hoon on my new bike (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=70150), but since it was dark the whole time I figure we can call it night riding practice as well. I'm with you Helen - not a big fan of riding in the dark either really, but a bit of practice at it and you begin to feel more comfortable. Last night wasn't as bad as I remember it... you just have to take it easy. :)

Great to see everyone, meet the new comers, and chit chat for a while. What a good turnout. Hope you all enjoyed the ride tonight. Kudos to those there who are so good with the less experienced - Jmemonic especially. Thank you.
I took my Little Boy home and then rode out to Wheatsheaf, plan was to go on to little River and try and meet up with the group but it was getting too dark for me, so I had a coffee there and then cruised back home. Feeling a lot better about riding in the dark - it's easier when I have my lights on full, rather than following others, and I just take it easy.
Home with a sparkle in my eye again - it feels like forever since I've been out. Rode past a couple of police cars and had to overcome my impulse to check my seatbelt. Senility ...

Just leave your brights on all the time. Most of the time a riders arms are in the way of you blinding them.
Heck I prefer to have the people who ride behind me have their brights on.

Excellent ride, what can I say? Loving the ZX-6R. The gravelley stretch heading up towards Hilltop wasn't too much fun, but everything else was beaut. I made sure I stayed behind phoenixgtr so I didn't go too fast too soon, but I found that it was so good to ride through the twisties, so well planted, that even in the dark I never had any trouble at all. Can't wait to get the brakes sussed and have another trip over the hill in the daytime!
Cheers phoenix for the bike swap, it was good to be able to feel the differences between the two bikes. Good for education and making both bikes better :)

I do try to get out more, just hard having a 4.30am start the next day all the time. At least I've been along for a few now. Is there one more before daylight savings starts?
And i really enjoyed the ride tonight, the sunset was just incredable reflected on the hills, and watching the clouds flow over the top was cute, tho the strong winds were not the best.
Had a moment at the end of the mad mile on the way back when i dropped down a gear and noticed the bike didn't seem to slow down and thought 'what?' then realised the wind was so strong it was pushing me into the corner. And with the sun gone it was a little weird to be in the dark. My regular lights are pitiful tho full beam are excellant... so full beam it is for me i think from now on.
But a lovely night, good to catch up briefly with a few people and meet a few newbies. One day we will have to do this in the daylight! ;)

Was another good ride, would have been even better if not for the wind, the run home seemed to go on forever.
Was just thinking for the darker rides coming up, doing a loop out through the bays and Gebbies to somewhere like the Halswell Tavern might indeed be a nicer way to go, finishing nearer or in town.

Could be a goer. From the looks of things my bikes going to be sitting in the garage over winter, only to come out on the weekends.
I had a pretty crap ride last night. Things aren't gelling and I'm doubting my riding ability more and more, which is just making it even worse. I really need this rider training weekend

I'll talk to you about this further tonight... if you want to, that is. I've got some ideas I'd like to talk to you about, but yeah, only if you're wanting to. I don't think they're less valid even though you've been riding bigger bikes much longer than I have.

For shorter rides there's also the option of Godley House at Diamond Harbour. If people are wanting more the trip up over the pass to Port Levy is a pleasant enough ride - although I wouldn't go up that way after dark as a group.

Only problem is that in winter Dyers Pass gets a large amount of grit thrown at it, and it really isn't much fun skating around on it. Going out through Halswell is the better (but more boring) option, but Gebbies Pass can still be hairy in winter. Either grit, or if they haven't bothered, icy patches, esp at nighttime. Probably best to curtail the CWNR over winter and pick it up again next daylight savings, and let people arrange amongst themselves if they want to go for a ride. Or, as someone mentioned, make it a daytime Saturday ride.

There's the tunnel mate. I would at least be very, very careful on any of the passes over winter. I don't think Dyers would be more dodgy than Evans or Gebbies...

Damn right! The mighty Zonga (rattle and clang) lost a grand total of two nuts and a bolt on the ride last night!!!! But thanks to Spuds, and his amazing collection of bits 'n' bobs, the headlight was secured after losing one of its bolts! :woohoo: I'm off to Mitre 10 today to get another bolt and some spring washers!
Thanks again for hangin back with me Spuds, highly appreciated! The mighty Zong made it to 97kph last night, a new land speed record, but only in the really sheltered places. That wind was a killer, dropped me down on the speed side something crazy!
All keen for next week, and whatever happens over winter. Saturday sounds good, or we can take it week by week and if the weather is good, go for Gebbies or Port Levy then Halswell Tavern. Or if the weather is poor maybe we can do Garage nights!

then he started tailgating me and swerving behind me. we came up to the lights and they turned orange, so, i went through hoping to lose him, but he carryed on through too. so i indicatored and pulled over outside hornby high and then he drove straight into the back me on purpose when i stopped.
the whole back has been pushed in, he hit me so hard, the back of his car came up in the air.
cops are going to probably charge him with careless use of a motorvechile

for those clear winternights that are dry but cold, try marshlands road then right into lowerstyx, past spencerville to brooklands, then on to Kianga and finish at that in little pub at bridge end. A quick little ride with some nice flat windy roads that are normally clean and a good little pub at the end. just a quick squirt back into town from there. Good practice roads for any level rider.
probably a 1/2 hr ride
a deviation could be spencerville road just past the spencer part turn of, has a few corners that can catch the unwary ride, espesially the last over the railway line, and then finnish at the Peg hotel in belfast
suggestions for you all to concider

Give Blacks Fasteners a go they have a lock washer called a NORD-LOCK WASHER I haven’t used them but they look pretty good, also have a real good range of bolts and the right TENSILE strength which is quite important. Miter 10 probably only have mild steel which may brake. Gasson Street or Blenheim Road helpful guys as well.

Scary shit huh! Same sort of thing happened to me years ago when I had Mrs Oakie on as pillion. Fortunately I was able to pull over infront of a parked car so he couldn't hit us. Ok apart from a couple of minor off's (yes lets be honest there have been accidents, and they have been covered here in detail) the Wed night cruisy rides should be considered a success.
Hats of to Tristan, Ryan and Liv, etc for a getting this going and continuing it, unfortunately daylight savings ends this weekend and this means darkness hits a bit earlier and some folks are not too keen on riding in the dark, ok perhaps suggestions are in order, I did see the idea of garage night and if I understand this right you are looking at servicing bikes, good idea and wofman (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=15381) may offer the use of his workshop for this purpose, mainly for teaching folks how to do the basics, (great idea if you ask me), however the idea is to have rides still and to this end please consider shorter routes you would feel happy with and perhaps some stopping points, in other words keep the suggestions coming.

Depends where we decide to go on the night. There are usually a few stops to let people catch up and for gasbagging etc... we're usually back in town aroundabout 9.30pm, so three hours from leaving to returning, but that includes the time stopped at the pub having some refreshments and more gasbagging :niceone:

hi rashika, we had left early, and rode back from akaroa just before dark, we passed deviant and phoenix on the akaroa hill as we were coming back down.
i think the guy took offense to me riding around him, after beibng cut-off, but i do not know for certain
I would tend to say you were on a ride but not this ride as you left from a different place at a different time and went to a different destination.
Dev and Phoenix left just before me from Duvauchelles but I didn't notice you go past. Maybe I was busy putting my lid on at the time.
I hope they throw the book at the driver, I imagine he got pissed at you for going round him while you were pissed at him for cutting you off. So it seems to me he started it and the law should finish it. But I doubt he'll learn. He's probably the kind of frustrating person even I would like to see smacked in the head as we fail to get through to them.

We had left Little River and were heading towards Hilltop in the last of the evening light. We were negociating the long section of resealed road covered in loose stuff when I spotted him heading down the hill the other way (towards Little River)... didn't have a chance to wave as my hands were tied taking care of the bike in the gravel and half light, plus I didn't realise it was him until the last second as I noticed his distinctive bike. So, yes we saw him, but no, he wasn't with the group.

Whichever we choose to do, if we plan to stop and eat at Godley House or the Wheatsheaf, we should contact those establishments beforehand to make sure they're still serving food by the time we arrive.
Personally I reckon we go over Dyers Pass road and up over the Summit road towards Gebbies Pass, down Gebbies to the pub on the corner, what's it called? The Black Tulip or something? Anyway, past that, back via Tai Tapu and meet up at the Halswell pub.

I agree - you know I'm not a fan of this piece of road either, I regard it as a goat track myself - but there are people who seem to quite like it. As far as 'last you heard'... it always has been littered with pot holes and shingle as far back as my memory goes (which, granted, isn't that far). There's one particular corner descending into the forest which seems to always have a coating of sandy, gritty crap collected there - I've slid on this patch more than once. Sun and rain doesn't find its way down there, so the grit they put on the road over winter collects down there and doesn't wash away.
I was trying to think of alternatives to the route that people always seem to cry "boooring " at - up Dyers Pass Road, down the other side, through Governors Bay, down through Teddington and past the Wheatsheaf onto Gebbies, etc - though I don't find it boring myself.
Maybe we could go north this week, then?

I'm one of those people who quite likes the summit road, and yes it is challenging everytime i ride it. But I love the views, and if I want a quick blowout on the nice day (even in early winter at times, tho it is slower due to the grit), it is awesome to go from one end (gebbies) to the other (sumner). Doesn't have to be quick, but if you manage to do it without crossing the centre too much (tho not many centre lines along it), then you can consider yourself a fairly capable rider, as it is NOT an easy piece of road.
ah well... i still like it ;)

Now that that point has been made, I don't mind the Summit Road, but I still regard it as a bit of a goat track™. But the fact is, the point has been made that most of the group don't like it (as Rashika's mentioned, it's not exactly newbie friendly™), and since this is still supposed to be a newbie friendly™ ride, we'll take that under advisement. Both Rashika & I both said it doesn't have to be ridden at pace, which it doesn't to actually learn from that particular piece of road.
And as a fact it is far less populated by other users than any of the roads around the peninsula and if all things were tallied up it has claimed less victims than any other piece of road, people moaning about it are usually the ones who've tried to attack it and come away with their arses kicked.

gotta correct you there DE... i never said it wasn't newbie friendly, BUT it does pay to be aware when riding it. It would actually be a good road for newbies, as long as they take there time and dont try to Valentino Rossi it.
And nah it aint a goat track at all, I'm sitting here and cant even think of any roads i would class as that now! They seem to be disapearing, hell Arthurs pass used to be that way... always scared me and THAT was in a car! (long before the viaduct and all that other stuff done to make it all so easy).
Try some of the other challenging roads like the karamea road, or Queen charlotte sound road: both are difficult roads due to weather/traffic/road surface/rain/debris/corners (one or 2!), but still have their positives (like the views on both), yet few would call them goat tracks... except maybe the Karamea road!
The summit road is nice cos there is not much traffic, and generally you can see if there is grit a long way off... and if you ride it fairly often then you know where the bits to watch are. And yep i know exactly the bit you talk about with grit, it does seem to be there summer or winter too.
The cruisy ride doesn't have to go any long distance, in fact shorter and slower would not be a bad thing. And then a wee blat back to Halswell via Motukorara... sweet!

And as for not having ridden with you recently ??? who the hell was following you through from Governor's bay to Allendale not that long ago mmm?? remember the couple of PMs late last week???
Yes, of course I remember those. That was for one short stretch, on one ride, in a 50km zone, before you overtook and carried on at a brisker pace than my 250 could manage. I wouldn't say that counts for too much in the grander scheme of things, would you? I meant that both you and dangerous are happy to tell me all about my 'ability' level, without having actually ridden with me for any decent stretch any time recently. I know I haven't been riding all that long when compared with you guys, but you prejudge without seeing for yourselves. I'm really not quite as bad as you might think... I've seen a few guys trying much harder to arse up, that's for sure!
PS: your rep re going from a 250 single to a 600 not that biger jump.... well look at it in horse power then, and you tell me... I dont have that HP now even ;)
It's not a big a jump as many have made... and about the same as the majority have made. That, and it's different for everyone. I've found it to be great so far, docile enough, but enough horse power when you mean it to make you pay attention to what you're doing. I remind myself every time I go out on the ZX-6R that it's not the NZ250 and to think accordingly. ;)
Your bike doesn't have as much HP as mine? Hmm. Specs says that mine supposedly makes 107hp @ 12000rpm (at the flywheel). Since when did a tractor need 100hp huh?! :dodge: :bleh: Just pissing with ya of course, I'd quite like a crack on a Guzzi...

Not too sure where you got that from - I had no such incidents, nothing even remotely close to that kind of thing - I had a good ride and didn't have any incidents or close calls. If someone told you about that, I'm sorry, but I don't think it was me.

Course, I've got what you're saying the whole way through. I know yours makes less hp and weighs more (stats page I looked up says 91hp... what you been feeding yours?! ;)), but they're actually not too far apart (107hp vs 91hp but 50% more torque, 226kg dry vs 203kg). Difference is the Kwaka doesn't make much in the lower half of the rev range and only gets cranking if you're willing to rev it, i.e. ask it to get going, on account of having much less torque than the Guzzi... and I haven't revved it that hard yet. I'm careful to keep it sensible until I get used to it. Have a go on it one day if ya keen, it's pretty docile. :niceone:

Oh yeah, I remember that - I was overtaking Rashika coming into that 70km/h stretch up the hill. There were two ugly bugly 4WDs in front of her, and I overtook one of those in the same stretch as overtaking her, but I knew I wouldn't have enough room to overtake the 2nd one before getting too close to the corner, so I came back into the left lane, splitting the two 4WDs. It wasn't an aborted maneuver, I did it exactly as I planned... and there still wasn't anything coming the other way when I pulled back into the left lane - something might've come around the corner afterwards though. I can understand it might've looked like a close call, but from what I remember it wasn't. There wasn't much room between the two 4WDs, for sure, but there was enough, and the one I had passed saw what I was doing and made sure I had room - nice gesture from the driver.

:pinch: We're not thinking your as bad as you may believe or nor are we doubting your abilities. As it is one doesn't have to travel countless kms to gauge what another rider is like, but watching you through that area did show me what I told you in that PM and as a point of safety for yourself it's something you have to work on.
Remember it was me who got you in contact with Nudez to get the NZ firstly, ironed out some of the issues with it, spat the dumby at the others on the 1st ride you were taken on and left to fend for yourself instead of being kept close, got you parts for zip when you binned. So never think I'm trying to shoot you down, I've got your best interests at heart :niceone:
It's just a shame that because of my work schedule & only being a 3 man team at work, and due to time & distance to actually get to a WNR regularly is an impossibility.
One bearing on what D & I try to get through to the WNR regulars is prior to these happening there have been quite a few posted & non posted rides all in the same areas almost without mishaps yet once the WNRs came along the mishaps have increased in regularity.
As for riding any particular distance with you, I'll be in touch soon about mapping out a route for a group ride particularly aimed at the newer riders & smaller capacity bikes and it'll be a bit further afield than around the playground

:Playnice: No need for personal shots. I may be less experienced, but that does not mean my comments are any less valid.
Also, at the risk of starting a squabble (would rather not), just because you (and dangerous) are very experienced does not mean you are somehow transformed into biking gods, making your opinions any more valid than the rest of ours. We're all here to ride our own ride - hell, that's why we ride bikes - not to be told where to ride and how to do it.
You and dangerous (are the main antagonists, but there are and always will be others) are at great pains to remind some of us that we're inexperienced and seemingly know nothing, totally at odds to the fact that I've ridden with neither of you recently, in any kind of setting. dangerous reckons I've bitten off more than I can chew with the ZX-6R, and you reckon I won't listen to a word you say, and keep trying to make me eat humble pie. Well guess what? While I'm not as experienced as you, nor am I a baby and I don't expect to be treated as such just for being younger, which I suspect is the main reason - you see me as a kid.
I've heard riding advice from all directions, and when your a learner people try to HELP you become a good and safe rider so deal with it. Dont take the defense that you know it all better than those who have been doing what we're all doing for a hell of a lot longer than you, think it's called ignorance. Im half D's age (hehehe sorry ya old fart) as well as others, and I dont see it as being treated as a kid, just friends that dont wanna see their friends in a coffin.
I've done alot of riding with the 'main culprits' of all this bitching, get scorned for doing stupid passes, riding over the centre line, little things we all do, and im glad they do its made me a better/safer rider. It doesnt mean smile, nod and do everything your told, even just gives you something to think about.. nor are they trying to say they're perfect, so why take such offense?
Why not prove your not a kid, if you choose not to take a piece of advice its not an issue we dont all need to hear about it.

re yur machine now it aint docile... but your respect for it is good...
More docile than phoenix's machine... having ridden his bike from the Wheatsheaf to Little River, there's a smallish but quite noticeable difference between the two machines, engine response wise. Partially his aftermarket end can, but also his being in a better state of tune - it just goes better than mine, and I definitely had to respect it, more so than I have to with mine. My carbs are in need of a bit of a tune and perhaps a clean too (excuse for new end can, anyone?), they're a bit fluffy and annoying under about 7000rpm. It's a bit of a pain actually, it faffs around a bit if there aren't enough revs on the clock!
Sorry, will let you go to bed! :o

In the meantime its as much bike time as I can get!! Alone or in a group.
Don't know how good it is in the long term for the bike, but it gets the water blaster every now and then due to my oil catch pipe on the chain.... A few people saw it in Little River last week, it has gotten a lot better so I think the oil was a little too full!!
Rashika
2nd April 2008, 04:30
Oh yeah, I remember that - I was overtaking Rashika coming into that 70km/h stretch up the hill. There were two ugly bugly 4WDs in front of her, and I overtook one of those in the same stretch as overtaking her...
yeah that was the bit but here is where the inexperience is talking... and i will use that word as it is apt. Perhaps you need to pause a moment before trying to overtake another rider and just see why they haven't passed. There could be a reason... like a car they have seen and you have not, as in this case. I saw a car approaching long before you passed the first vehicle, and I think you were in front of me from earlier, and behind bent52 at the time. I decided to wait, as who knows how fast the car may be coming thru. You did suddenly swerve back between the cars and were lucky they made room for you. Patience will serve you better in the long run.
And yes I have made the same mistakes at times... believe me i still remember those moments, I guess there is some bonus to having a very torquey bike. And 107Hp is quite a jump from the NZ, makes it same Hp as mine, tho yours is 30kgs heavier (actually THAT does surprises me... maybe the fairings are weighty? ) No-one thinks you are a lousy rider DE, I think you are fine.
I'd like to be able to ride with you as well, continue to learn stuff - and have you less bored now that my bike's not so teensy any more ;)
and this bit DOES annoy me... EVERYONE has to ride a 250 or less initially, its life, EVERYONE else who rides accepts that and no-one i have ever talked to denegrates a 250rider or their bike, yet you do it to yourself?? many times on KB.
The NZ has far more get up and go than a few other learner bikes, and is certainly capable of staying with most bikes at legalish speeds, so why put it down?

I really don't remember it being anything like as close as you tell it, and while you've said here I "did suddenly swerve back", my memory quite clearly tells me that there was no swerving involved and I filtered back in. Like I said, might've looked close, but really wasn't.
tho yours is 30kgs heavier (actually THAT does surprises me... maybe the fairings are weighty? ) No-one thinks you are a lousy rider DE, I think you are fine.
I think this is where people get their knickers in a twist a bit, thinking it's such a big step - they're thinking of it as much lighter than it is. That 203kg is the dry weight too, probably nearly 250kg in 'ready to ride' trim. The sports 600 class back then was all trying to make more power, and didn't care quite so much about the weight. They've only started getting quite a bit lighter in the last few years, but back when mine was made they weren't all that light. It's only 20kg or so lighter than Dangerous' Guzzi, that's saying something.
For me, the power isn't something that's caught me off guard (that, and 107hp at the crank? Not at the moment, with the carbs needing a tune)... I find that, compared to the NZ, I more have to be aware of the extra weight in low speed maneuvering, like in car parks, walking the bike around, or stopping at the lights, stuff like that. But, I'm always mindful of it, so it hasn't caught me out.
and this bit DOES annoy me...
*snip*

Hang on just a tick - I wasn't putting the NZ down at all. I was just teasing T.W.R - we'd joked in the past that the ZXR750 doesn't like "pootling", it's annoyed, a wild animal champing at the bit wanting to be released, and following the old NZ around was making it grumpy.... but the whole point is, I was joking. Sure, I was getting tired of being on a little bike after so long, but I also constantly said it was an awesome bike to learn on and a great bike for me... I had people say stuff like "geez that thing can go, I couldn't stay with you!"
Put it to you this way - I didn't do what most others my age and younger did (and are still doing), and buy an upgrade bike well before getting my full licence... indeed, I actually didn't buy the ZX-6R for nearly 5 months after getting my full, so I was on the 250 much longer than many. I don't hate the NZ (or any other 250s or their riders)... it's just great to finally be able to overtake uphill!!

Well, I thought it was quite a good ride tonight. The Summit Road was quite clear for a change, and apart from the chilliness (thank god for hot grips! :bleh:), I quite enjoyed myself. Haven't done the full length of the Summit for a while, but yeah, that was good :)

Well folks was nice to see everyone who was able to get out for the last ride before daylight savings ends, it was a shame a few more could not make it.
The summit road seems to have been a great success judging by comments and is no doubt a valuable learning ride, we really could not have asked for a better night having been treated to a great sunset and chilly but clear conditions.
Mentioned tonight was the fact that a workshop has been organised for a spanner evening with a fair amount of interest shown, it would be good if we can agree to a date and perhaps start working on finding out what folks want to learn, if we need then another thread can be started for this.
The Halswell pub was a nice destination stop and we could use that in the future, they seem to be hospitable and had a good range of food on offer so if anyone has route suggestions for perhaps shorter rides finishing here then please out them forward.
Thank D for offering to help push me off the bike, I was worse getting back on then trying to get off when I got home was a mission.

Had hoped that I could have got a ride out, mentioned it to Mrs Bullet when I arrived in from work.... but the smell of roast lamb was overpowering, and that seduced me to remain home bound.
Bugger bugger. The 07-08 summer has been a mighty nice one. Sure hope to make a few winterish rides. The Brass and the like... Will continue to check this thread for any activities.... :2thumbsup

Good run, especially the little adventure bit that we three bikes did with sheep, shingle, dirt and gates in the last of the twilight down Ahuriri Road at the bottom of Gebbies Pass.
Was good timing to pop back on to the back of the middle group of roadies when we got back to the main road.

Good to hear you had a nice ride! :niceone:
I'm one of those people who quite likes the summit road, and yes it is challenging everytime i ride it. But I love the views, and if I want a quick blowout on the nice day (even in early winter at times, tho it is slower due to the grit), it is awesome to go from one end (gebbies) to the other (sumner). Doesn't have to be quick, but if you manage to do it without crossing the centre too much (tho not many centre lines along it), then you can consider yourself a fairly capable rider, as it is NOT an easy piece of road.
ah well... i still like it ;)
I agree - the summit road is a very nice piece of road. However, there are quite a few things you need to bear in mind up there. It has a lot of cyclists on it - which means that the car coming around that next corner is not unlikely to be partially or completely in your lane. Sometimes gravel and shingle gets thrown onto the road surface, so pushing to apex a left-hand corner could result in a nasty surprise. There's sheep up there - so keep your eyes open for them. Livestock trucks travel the road every now and again - combined with the sheep means that there can be shit on the road as well. A couple of places along the way there's eroding rock walls, at these places it's not uncommon to see larger rocks lying on the road.
Now that winter is approaching you have to very f-ing careful. When the frosts start setting in you'll find grit everywhere up there - especially in the sharper corners. Beware!
I ride it often - sometimes I commute along it and head down Dyers Pass road. I can see why people on more powerful bikes could find it scary - my 250 hasn't managed to give me any nasty surprises up there, but I suspect a more powerful bike could loose grip on some of the dodginess pretty easily unless ridden with a steady hand.
Dunno if I think it is suitable for group rides though...
Ah, whoops. I'm used to the only weight figures being quoted as dry weight figures - the website I used to get that weight actually says "weight (incl. oil, gas etc): 203kg". My mistake. Okay, so it's 185kg dry then, that makes a little more sense, I thought 203kg seemed a bit porky! :sweatdrop:
WTF - are you calling my new bike porky? It's 203 kgs dry... Probably around 230 kgs wet.:angry2:

I had wondered if it was you following me back to Halswell. In my mirror I could see one white lamp, but didn't look like it was lighting up much, and next to it, which would be the righthand side bulb, an orange glow... not unlike one of those little hallway pilot lamps to show you the way to the bog in the middle of the night! :blip: Anyway, they didn't look very effective to me, so I can't blame you for using my headlight, which is extremely effective - quite happy with it actually! As an aside, what'd you think of my lines/pace/smoothness through there? Pick anything up?

Sorry for ragging on you dude. You were riding where I would ride a push bike is all.
The staggered formation is usually a good idea as it gives you extra space to stop in, but you should never put yourself in danger by thinking that you have to stick to it.
Also if Im at the front of a group, Im always in the right hand side of the lane as it is usually the place where you can see the most therefore you can hopefully avoid anything that decides to try and get in your way.

Yes and yes. There is a group within the group that always takes their time and makes sure the L platers / learners / "I'm in no hurry"ers are well looked after. Bad time to join up in that daylight savings has abandoned us, and it can only get colder and darker from now on for the next few months, but good time to join in that you'll get practice riding in the dark, and the rides will be shorter, and less likely to be spending time on the open road (less Vespa friendly) due to the lack of light and warmth. :)

Would it be worth doing a regular weekly weekend ride during the colder months? Or am I being silly?

Its the Ulysses Ambulance run. Last years run was a blast, the 2 years before was a wet trip. And yes before you say it the HD does go out in the rain, sometimes, ok rarely.

Have a good one guys - be safe out there and remember that it'll get dark really early. ;)

Just call me egor
Unfortunately it will be going dark by the time we leave the carpark. Stupid winter!!
Not fussed on which route to take tonight. The Halswell pub does seem to be a good finishing point though

Got to admit a blat around the bays/Summit/Tunnel what ever and finish about Halswell pub is more appealing than a long trek back to chch after stoping out of town.
See ya at BK.

And an expensive one it was too! Hope it was worth it... not that it's worth convincing either of you guys to spend less on eating out. I'll just carry on my merry way of bring my crumby sandwiches to work. They're nothing flash but I'm prepared to make them the night before and so save money for other stuff. But then, I've been skint for so long I've had to bite every coin, haven't had the luxury of being able to afford to buy lunch :(
The chicken burger I had at the pub was excellent. Nearly as good as the ride, which was quite good too. Good to see there are still some game enough to brave the lack of daylight savings and cooler air temp! Though once it starts getting frosty we'll probably have to flag the CWNR until it warms up again - downright dangerous with black ice lurking in that next shadowy corner... :pinch:

Meh licences are just a technicality. I had one about 13years ago but had abit of a run in with johnny law and a judge decided that I should have mine taken off me and resit from scratch.
Ah the good ol days of reckless abandonment.....
After riding without my bit of paper for so many years i never got around to sitting it again and since I've joined the military its kinda needed now.
I've just finished the mechanical rebuild of my bike and its all registered and almost pretty again. Need to get a couple fairing pieces to make it look a little better. For the record bike vs stupid ass teenager that can't look when running across roads. Bike WINS!!! but breaks :(
The license issue is a work in progress and after I've sorted out a handling cert i'll go get it not a problem at all.
