My only question--Is there such a thing as an Innapropriate bike?
at 16 I was touring rhe NI on a honda CB100--80km/h flat out

Sounds like the perfect bike for this caper! :2thumbsup

So will i need to bring my car up or dose somebody have a van with a tow ball? I can bring my car, i will need a trailer for broken bikes tho, and it will be slow, car only a 1.6, how appropriate lol

at this stage i have had 2 offers to drive tail end, i would rather have someone on board with mechanical skills as i would rather all bikes get there and back not just thrown onto a trailer its all about over coming adversary as it happens, ya know an adventure?

also BigDog you are right at Outward Bound there is no hand holding, they break you then rebuild you into a better person using the outdoors and challenge as tools for shaping you into a better person.
if you want to know more go visit www.outwardbound.co.nz (http://www.outwardbound.co.nz)
all you need to know is there!!

Purely for simplicity...

Besides have you seen how inappropriate my scooter is with me aboard?

Any bike can be fun with the right attitude, manhood is not measured in cc's.

Heathens! Who dares bad mouth the journey! Hah, worries about injuries and what nots are fair enough (fatalities is just plain bad voodoo..) But I would trust my safety with a few of the people on this trip. But mostly with myself, it's all about self-preservation..

On the accomodation front i'm pulling up a big fit.. err.. nothing. Don't know anybody up north unfortunately but i'll call around for a friend of a friend thing that New Zealand does so well at.

Fireball, you got any design submissions yet? I'm no artist but I know a fair few people who are. Infact, a mate of mine drew me up a little something a while ago which I think fits this occasion quite well. It was titled 'Gambling Insanity' and I have plans on get it tattoo'd across my back. Take a look, bad scan quality but what yah gonna do..

Wot 'e said.

I think you guys are making too big a deal of this. Trip like this is no different on a small bike to a big one . Y' get on. Start up, take a squizz at the sun to figure out which way is north and off y'go . Regardless of cc . Just takes longer on a little bike

All this talk about mental challenge, and breakdowns and injuries.Meh, no more likely than any other ride.

About the only inappropriate bike I could think of is a big crusier, or an MV . Cos of the gravel.

It's just a ride north on little bikes. The only challenge is boredom. But there are compensations for that.

Did you hear that?:gob:
The sound of a pin drop as it sinks in that someone just called a GN a bigger bike.

It has been acknowledged that some students etc will not be able to buy a bike exclusive to the challenge and where it would not defeat the purpose of the challenge (to show that all bikes can be fun regardless of size) exemptions will be given.

If funding for the trip is required get some personal sponsors, parents are good when they see you out doing something constructive such as fund raising. :scooter:

Just floating an idea here, but why not seek sponsors for individual bikes.
sponsor can put whatever signwriting they are willing to pay for on the bikes in exchange for a donation to the cause.

Well i'm going for the 5th one, This'll be the best first bike (plus dad said he'd have to pitch in so he could ride it). I don't know if i'll be able to come as i live to far down and i'm a tad young.

There's possibly one more coming up from Napier, and you can crash at my place before the ride. You're never too young!

Well! What a day it has been! Rode the little A100 for a while, its name shall be "Pippi" ... and the poor little thing chewed through the oil and came to a halt just outside of Taupo!

Many thanks to Meekey_Mouse and her brother for putting Pippi up for the night! And the guy in the van who is a biker who rides a Ducati 916 giving us a lift there!

Ixion's practical knowledge of things two-stroke always has me like a student realising things for the first time :pinch: I'm a plonker of a two-stroke owner at times!

Maverick for giving me the magic carpet treatment on the SV back to homebase, smooth riding and a great experience being pillioned!

Donor for his usual quips and fromage frais, nice to see the Intruder being let out for a long stretch!

Sprag for being the party pill popper and taking too many HTFU pills to count! Wheedling free water from the BP girls was classy!

Meeky for her patience in putting up with smelly, dirty and noisy bikers from up that way!

And as for me? Just the same old same old, actually ... this was one of the most awesome biking days I've ever had! :woohoo:

Good practice for the main event (and this time, I shall be prepared, for knowing is half the battle! :msn-wink:)

Shouldn't be major, emery cloth is your friend. 'Course you CAN do it the proper way if you insist. Couple of hours work should see it right. I've done it at the roadside before today.

Expect the CC ride itself ot be a succession of such incidents.

Being the lazy yet double hard bastard I am, I haven't read the entire thread.

However, pop it on record that I will make myself available the weekend of this event, to hook up a rental trailer and play recovery vehicle for anyone unfortunate enough to need a hand.

(Would be responding from home, so would be a bit of a wait...)

Have a station wagon, so can load a good bit of gear on board.

Hey guys, bit of a rare oppourtunity.

I need more space in me garage for another bike and I was wondering if anyone's keen to buy my Honda CM 200? It's probably around 1980's, engine's in mint condition aswell as electrics, just a bit of a surface rust which you don't really need to bother about. Needs a Rego and Wof.

I'm willing to chuck it to someone for around $600. Willing to go as low as 500..

Would be perfect for the CC challenge and that's why i'm advertising it on here.

That's being worked on at the moment, previous owners are being hassled to find the old license plate. If they can't find it it'll need to be re-vinned. If they can, just re-registered.

Will say to be on the safe side will need to be re-vinned cause I've been hassling these bastards for a couple of months now.

There may soon be a bike available free to a good home that would suit the purpose.
Needs reg wof and some bits and pieces tidied up.

If you want to "Win a free bike to fix up for the challenge" you need to pm me with the reason you should get a free bike.

Should it actually become available as expected this bike will be gifted to the person with the best reason. Judging is final and may relate to suitability of reason and not relate to actual need.

OK if the accomodation has been sorted out, disregard this:

You have 4 Choices:

1. You could try and get hold of Jonny Rotten (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=6418), he's a KBer who has recently moved up North and lives on the road leading up to the Cape. He may have a big enough lawn to fit you all on....

2. Ninety Mile Top Ten (www.ninetymilebeach.co.nz) - This is who I use when we conduct the Northern Exposure Tour. Nice and handy to Kaitaia - only 20min North of Kaitaia and has cabins starting from $65. Share this with 4 others and you get a cheap place to stay and it sure bets a wet tent. Online Bookings. Resturant/Bar/Showers/Toilets. Have been broken-in to withstand Bikers.

3. Houhora Heads Camping Grounds (http://www.nzcamping.co.nz/camp.php?id=7)- (Also known as Wagener Park) Have cabins and tent sites not sure how much. Similar as Top Ten but not as nice. Showers/Toilets. Only 1 hours ride to the Cape from here.

4. Waitiki Landing Campgrounds (http://www.nzcamping.co.nz/camp.php?id=3) - Not sure how good they are, never stayed. Basic Cabins/Backpackers. Petrol Station (when they have got any petrol - see below warning) /Basic Shop/Showers/Toilet. Only 25kms to the Cape from here. Have Bar/Resturant. Best place to stop for Breakfast before heading up the last 20kms of gravel to the top!

IMPORTANT TIP!
Please make sure Waitiki Landing has petrol in stock as this service station sometimes runs out of petrol! Phone ahead on the day to be sure. Next petrol station is back in Pukenui (Houhora) which is 100kms away. If in doubt fill up at Pukenui - If there is a support wagon, extra fuel wouldnt be a bad idea.....

Any other questions just ask - I know the Far North well (I come from up there aye!)

You never know, I may tag along for a ride - see what happens.

Well. I gone and done it now.

Left at 6.30am today to New Plymouth, to pick up the new beastie. Arrived at about 11.30am in New Plymouth. Tried to kickstart the bike, but no no avail, ah well. didn't matter anyway. Handed over the $300, and loaded it on the Trailer, secured with GiJoe's "Mega-Anime-Dragonball Z-Epilepsy-Orange-Tie-Downs" (TM).

Decided the drive back was a bit boring, so we picked up a hitchhiker. Was full of cool old stories, we picked him up from just outside New Plymouth, and his final destination, was two streets over from my house. Weird coincidence.

Got back all good, pushed the bike up the drive, put in sme fresh fuel, and gave it a kick. and another kick, and another, it rolled over, made a few spluttering and farting noises, and wouldn't idle. Spotted an oil leak from one of the exhaust seals. Starts all good, just doesn't stay there.

Will clean out the carby (if I can find where it is) and the fuel tap tomorrow.

Anyone wanna get their hands dirty/offer advice/abuse?

Also, discovered that if you turn on the indicators, the two diagonal bulbs flash, so the left front, and right rear! Awesome! Noone knows where i'm going, i'll fit right into Auckland traffic. Will have a look at the wiring tomorrow.

Anyone else got their bike yet? And I need a name for it.

Maybe "Blue Thunder"!

If you are unsure if your bike meets the criteria feel free to PM one of the organizers to verify, either BigDog or myself, it will not be discussed in the thread until a ruling has been provided please PM one of us if you are unsure.

ROUTE PLAN: At this stage Ixion's route seems a suitable one, but any suggestions are welcome. a map will be attached once the route has been marked out and finalized so watch for that.

RISKS: As you are all aware this is ENTRY AT YOUR OWN RISK we will be on open roads in all weather conditions, you are responsible for your own safety. ALL RIDERS MUST HAVE the appropriate clothing for the ride and be wearing a HI-VIS vest, this is for your safety. As we are riding in a group there shouldnt be to many issues out there with traffic.
If you have first aid certification please let me know.
also it is a recommendation to carry a first aid kit and a puncture repair kit as we will be on gravel roads.

COST: There will be an entry cost to this event this is yet to be decided on the amount and all funds go into the kitty to be donated, also at this stage we anticipate some costs for food (beers and BBQ) and accommodation for both nights or if there is a friendly biker out there that doesnt mind letting us sleep on your lawn or paddock for a night drop me a line.

SWEEP VAN/TRUCK: We need a volunteer/s to drive behind as a safety car and a sweep vehicle. WE CAN NOT RIDE UNLESS WE HAVE ONE this is also for safety reasons. So drop me a PM if you can provide your service.

Oh hooray - the fact that it's not Queen's Birthday Weekend means I can offer a secret accommodation option to everyone involved. Unfortunately I cannot reveal the nature of this accommodation due to me being an International Woman of Mystery.

Here's what you need to know:

It is north of the Houhora service station, but south of Cape Reinga
It involves riding on approximately 6 km of gravel road to get there
There are no shops or petrol stations, so provisions will need to be bought at Pukenui
Nobody can know the destination in advance. You will have to ride there blindfolded (just adds to the adventure!)

Please let me know if you're interested!

klingon
18th April 2008, 17:39
Oh by the way there are a lot of beds and several bathrooms at the destination, but you will need your own sleeping bag. It is likely there will be a nominal cost to cover hot water, power, etc but I will check that out and let you know.

I think there is a BBQ and there is definitely a well equipped kitchen.

The cost is likely to be by donation, and no more than $20 per person per night.
