Soo many people to thank, I have a great family, some awesome mates and a beautiful g/f (and her kids). Bit more to read, if you want to come have a bullshit session then just send a PM or visit. It'd be like listening to Drew but I can't follow you out of the building (but am better looking).

Gidday Sean,

Good to see you up on the site here.

Let your fingers do the walking through the threads, wishing you all the very best for a full and speedy recovery - you're well on the way and I am sure all of us here will give you plenty of stick and know you will come back with many humorous lines.

Sean I see you were on at 3.47am... What the Hell!!!! You wait till I come over mister!! :D

Anyway seeing as Sean is now able to post for himself I dont need to update you all, although he is only allowed on for certain periods of time.

I just want to thank all the Kbers who came in to see us at the hospital, or txt/pmed me there messages, gave me clothes to wear, brought me dinner to the hospital, gave us coffee (thanks Kapitken), magazines. I really didnt appreciate the friendships I had made on KB until this time. love you guys.

And my Mum is friggin awesome, just want to say how much I appreciate her, seeing as she is trying to find Kiwibiker and read the threads... hope you find this mum. Thanks for looking after the kids for me, I left them with someone who loves them as much as I do.

The day before Seans accident, Sean had come over to look after the kids for me, so I could take mum... with the help of the Wellington Harley Hog riders for a surprise ride on the back of a Harley. (thanks guys) she absolutely loved it... so my mum is now officially a biker chick. :scooter:  Will take you out again oneday... as thanks!

Sean.. well you know how I feel about you, just take it easy today, the more rest the quicker you will be out of the hospital.. which you want more than anything.

Hi Sean (& Melissa),

I am sure you will be shocked to see me on here but I thought that this was the best place to check that you have been looking after your self Sean.... I am niw an official member of Kiwibiker. I never thought that would EVER happen:Punk:

Try and sleep through the night Sean so you can be awake when people come to see you. Your snoring is not a good look or music to the ears for those poor unfotunate people that get to witness it.

Have a good week guys and behave yourself Sean!

Hey Sean!
I've been watching your progress with fingers crossed and I'm really pleased to see you recovering. You were the first person I met on KB, and haven't forgotten the friendship you offered to the 'newbie' 3 years or so ago, when you waited for me at the mobil on Paremata roundabout for my first KB ride.

Take care mate, and I hope to catch up with you again soon.

All the best!

Shouldnt be too long before skellybum is posting again, he stalks me with txts at the moment .

Hes had the bandages/splints removed from his legs. Is going through the boredom stage, wants to go home, wants to move around, have a party, ride his bike at the hill climb, go on a road trip. Doctors are pleased with his progress :niceone:

Going to spend Friday afternoon/night with him (I will be very shhhhhh drew!), hopefully can take some dinner in for him or at least some pudding, would be a nice change from the hospital meals, then I will head to the Hill Climb Saturday Morning.

Great news indeed! But keep telling him (for he will inevitably have forgotten) that he has had head trauma and needs to take things easy. Pushing himself will only prolong his recovery. After he's tired of watching the lawn grow, he could always watch some paint dry. And the second cricket test starts tomorrow!

"...and how are you getting to them these days Mr Kelly?" (I can't walk)

"...well I've been flying there the last 2 weeks, but if you can find my missing wheel chair then I might give that a crack instead"

Yes I'm bored. Some fairly ugly skin graft scars on the legs, sleep lots during the day and not enough at night. Great staff here though... including a team of Doctors that all look like Rob Lowe and 2x as handsome. Fortunately RantyDave is gifted in the way of the Mac and has provided me with my own iBook and a Vodafone Vodem internet connection. Mint, you're a gentleman Dave.

Gah, think sometimes I'm a medical profession play thing... seems I'm being shipped to a head-injury-rehab place tomorrow to be assessed ... for 3 f**king weeks. I'm fine, finer than I was before the damn accident... even my flatmate's cat could tell you that but we both know that you need to be a 'pro to know' and you need some weeks to work it out :)

What this means though is that visits are off for a wee bit. I don't know much about the new place but its not in the same suburb, and I'm not so sure about the visiting hours. I thought it best to publish the new intentions though.

Anyway... I'll post if I can/allowed to.

The important thing is that when you DO GET OUT of hospital/care you are able to STAY OUT.

Well I thought I was a little low on Vitamin Reality so I headed down the Intentsive Care, visit my old haunt, one of which I'd had no memory.... at all. Magic place, poor guy in the bed near by didn't sound so good. He was apparently 'tubed'. I'll say. Lovelly nursey types down there, good folk alround.

Miserable place for my friends, loved ones and family to hang out for 6 days wondering if I'm going to make it. Think I have some brownie points to pay back

Hey Skels

You'll be sweet at this other place, and like you have been told its all to make sure you are ok. Just keep looking forward to things you are going to do when you are all set and you'll be sweet.

Phoenixgtr and I are coming up for a weekend trip in June, and Phoenix has made it very clear to me (Which I dont object to) that we are to come visit you. Fully expect you to be home by then!!!:niceone:

No brownie points required to be paid back I am picking mate. Shit happens, you copped a big wad of it! Now is all about getting well and showing them close to you how much you care for them and yourself.

ICU waiting rooms are horrible, but a place that scrapes off all the bullshit if you are lucky enough to come out alive! Seems you get 10/10 for that score. Take your time, do as you are told (within reason :blip:) and concentrate on getting well!

FWIW my ex had a huge accident on his bike not long after I met him. It was not as serious as yours to be fair, but he never remembered exactly what happened. We decided that sometimes it is better not to know and just accept what we were told happened by a following rider. He used to get little flashbacks, which allowed a bit of a piece together of events in his mind, and that was good enough for us.

Take your time mate, life is sweet!

Serious crash unit should have an idea ... but I doubt you will through your own membery - Grub's accident was small comparitively and he still doesn't remember .. just makes up different ideas of what he thinks happened.

Hubby doesn't remember either. Remembers a section of road prior but nothing from there. Report from the cops pieced some of it together through witness reports.

Skelly's right though, you do have to know

Some clarity:

* If my front tyre slipped cause I was pushing hard (unlikely: I was on my own, nothing to prove and on my way home) I'd replace the front in a flash
* If the frame felt like it flexed then I would address that (somehow - bluetack/kneed-it?)
* I grabbed a hand-full of brake and low sided, I'd consider not doing it again
* High-sided? Rear tyre, might look for broken brake lines, fuel lines etc
* Diesel, rocks/gravel, sweating road? Buy better glasses/contacts lenses.

...but, I don't know what it was which means from now on I just ride more nervous. Crashes like this not only give you time to think more about how you ride, but give you more cause to think about it eh.

Wasn't caused by tyres mate, it was the top of the hill so your supercorsers were planty warm and the best in the bizzo.

Frame flex is real unlikely, that bike has it's handling short falls, but weak chassis aint part of it.

You know better than to grab a stupid amount of front brake, unless something caused you to need it.

The bike didn't "high side", you went down on a left hand croner, and the left side of the bike has the scratches.

The road seemed to be in good nick from what others riding that day have told me.

Those things out of the equation, it becomes more mysterious, and very likely never to be known.

What we do know, is that if you decide to remount bikes, we can make it safer with better suspension, a decent setup, and some time learnin a better way to pick lines. Not saying any of this is the cause, it's just something we should maybe all be doing to ensure we are best equipped to dodge the never ending barret of bullets, thrown our way on public roads.

Hi sean, hope your rehab is still moving smoothly. Jimbo and I called into see you in ICU the day you had the opp on your leg's. Looked like you needed to have plenty of rest..... Carolyn and me will be in for visit in the not to distant future.

Mate I was heading up this side of the hill when your ambo was heading down, got to the top through the massive traffic jam only to hear from the boy's at the top a bike went down bad!!!! one of the lad's said it was an RSV with KTL stickers....... I felt sick an just wanted off the hill an off the bike.

Mate what Drew has posted is so true, it was perfect conditions for riding. Neil a guy that works with me was second on the seen and picked ya bike up an leant it against the fence. He was in an HSV senator an had pulled over to let you past a few corner's before, he said you were moving quick........

I know that of the three crashes i've had of late two have been rider error an the other diesel, can't really learn from the diesel but have spent alot of time and asked a lot of questions about the other two of myself and the way I was riding every time I jumped on the bike.

You gave us all a big scare bro... take care, be good and enjoy life:apint:

The title of the tread is "Info on Skelstar". It was started so concerned parties could remain informed as to the progress of 'one of ours' (tm) who had a rather unfortunate prang. Anything else is off topic.

Anyone wishing to discuss the psychology of the post-crash motorcyclist's mind is encouraged to do so on another thread.

Please - :Playnice:

Yeah, already had a look at the helmet. Bit disconcerting the dirty big tyre mark over the top but only strengthens my feeling of 'luck'.

What is worrying is the kneeslider stuck to the inside on one side... makes me wonder how I fit my knee in there at the same time.

I was super frustrated at this place early on as there was little to do, very difficult to relate to my co-clients, and an even greater lack of sleep. Now I have my own room (not with 3 others), got the schedule down pat, learned to give my cohorts giggle-fits and get on well with the staff/handlers.

So, I'll endevour to master the 'home' routine for the first time in 18 years(ish) and run my parents ragged. Cheers for the support and visitors when I've been here, its not the most convenient place to come to.

Went to hospital today and got some more X-Rays... seems my metal ladened bones are healing and I can start physio on my legs now. This means that I have a stab at 'learning' to walk again. Will be a water/pool thing for a bit, not aqua-robics I hope, but a strength thing. Very pleased.

Another positive development is that the fractured vertibrae in my neck have healed too and I can get rid of that f**king "philly' collar/neck brace. Honestly this thing was making my life miserable and made trying to sleep more and more difficult each night. Now I must wear a soft collar and phase it out over the next week. Well, I think I've lost about 10kg so maybe its more something to with not wanting to resemble a 'cornerstone'.... again.

My friend called it the 'coma diet'.
I think it's something in the air/water/droogs at t'hospital.
I've been in t'hospital only once (apart from when I was born), and I lost 5 kg in 5 days. I'm sure my appendix didn't weigh that much...

Anyways - good news about your continued recuperation, Sean! :niceone: I hope it all goes very well.

Isn't there one of those hydro therapy pools at Mermaids Medical Centre on Courtney place? Come to think of it, I've got a bit of a spasm that might need treatment too.

Some advice for ya if you try that one....

Wear goggles - apparently when they first set up that tank one of the 'lovely mermaids' had clamidia(sp) or Syphillus or something similar that was nasty and infectious and they all caught it from swimming around as the tank was laden with her germy fanny greeblies.

Now try getting turned on when you see them in that tank?!

Nice work love! Very impressed!

I used to work at a large thermal resort up this way, we had codes to use on the radios for what was happening around the plcae. Code RED, was obviously for something very serious, my personal favourite though...

CODE BROWN!

Another milestone (or 2):

...have moved back to the flat, returned to work (half ours for now), and should be given the 'nod' to walk without crutches tomorrow at the Fracture Clinic. I've kinda dispensed with the crutches already most of the time cause I'm impatient, and it doesn't hurt. My physio knows and didn't growl so I think I'm 'ok'.

Hold ups: I'm not allowed to drive until I get checked out for my reaction times and judgement as a result of the 'damage to my squash' (as Drew puts it). This is going to take a bloody MONTH!!! (dammit) so it will be state funded taxis until then. Fortunately my driving was awesome before my accident so maybe I'll just be 'average' now (p/t). Sooner this gets sorted the better as I want to make plenty of trips over the hill... and life and continue as usual.

As soon as I sort insurance for the bike gear, and manage to get on the bike physically, and cope with handling it in the driveway then I'll be into that as well. Yay!

Got back from meeting with a Neurologist and looks like I won't be able to ride or drive until 24 Feb next year (head stuff)... understandably disappointed: my legs are good-ish and I can bend my knees, nearly finished putting final touches on Mille, insurance for my gear has paid out and had a swanky helmet picked out and everything. Gah.

Still, times like these you find out/are reminded who your good mates are eh... Vicki has offered to keep my bike warm for me for the next *gulp* 8 months.

Yeah it would. If he had decided that I was 'good to go' I would have asked him some very pointed questions. Seizing on a bike is 10x worse/more dangerous for me than at the wheel of a car.

8 months isn't long. I've put up with worse things than that for twice as long.

Been an interesting week... (bear in mind I'm a bit of a chicken)

Had an MRI on Friday... Neuro was keen to see if there was nerve damage due to some of my muscle being REALLY weak in my back. They asked all sorts of questions: am I pregnant, have I just had surgery, do I have any rods/plates/pins they should know about (umm... yes!). They weren't interested at all in my "balls of steel", go figure. Was interesting in the tunnel. I likened the noise to doing the Cook Strait crossing in the bottom part of the Ferry. Not scary. "Geeky" interesting.

Neuro wanted to perform some Nerve Conduction Studies on Saturday. Under the "nerve damage" guise he placed electrodes on the front of my shoulder and a needle in my back (had to find the goddamn nerve) and would give me a really uncomfortable shock and measure the latency (time it took for the nerve to get the belt, to when the muscle did something). NO damage was found, bit bloody miffed that neither of the tests were to find out the source of the shoulder constant pain I'm having. Asked about it and he said "its not likely to be neurological". Its got to be, its not bloody physiological, and that is all that is left! Bit scary. NOT interesting.

ACC in their limited wisdom have decided that I can catch a bus to work, and since I don't live on a Bus route I shifted flat Friday/Sunday. In hindsight I should have shifted to Kaikoura and collected $100M, but shifted to Kelson instead. Drew and his kids were awesome in helping me... bit tricky as I can't really lift much, and if I do I tend to get annoying shooting pains in my shoulders for about 3 days. Umm... made a square peg fit a round hole half the size. Sold two cars to the wreckers. Good times. Stressful. Interestingish.

Oral Surgery yesterday. Had two holes drilled into my head/gums for inserted Titanium rods, which will have implants tacked on in 6 months. That is right Ladies, I'm going to look this hot for only another 6 months! Bit stressed about the procedure but mild sedatives made me sleepy and don't remember much. Been pretty sore since I've woken though. Running out of pain killers. Anyone got some Bourbon? Chances are that this is the last really unpleasant thing because of my accident.

Only 7.2 months to go!

Fatjim
16th July 2008, 11:46
