Just got off the phone with Mel and she reports no change overnight which is a very good thing.
He's currently in a stable condition in Hutt Hospitals ICU unit, although he is still unconsious. The doctors have not yet decided when they intend to wake him up.
The ICU is closed for visits between 2 and 4pm each day and Mel has asked you not visit first thing this morning as the family want to spend some time with him.
If you visit him, and want somewhere to let everybody know how he is you can this thread.
Again, if you need more info then PM Deano, Darkman or myself.
----- 09:39am 25th -----
Mel's just txt'd me that he's waking up all by himself.
Fantastic news.
----- 09:57am 25th -----
Well he's awake, a "bit" groggy and hates the breathing tube. All good news.
I guess he'll be like this for a while now. If anything changes I'll let you guys know.
----- 12:52pm 25th -----
Cheers T.
Mel just txt'd and said today is not a good day. He's having another CT scan, I imagine this will be quite tiring for him since he's awake.
So please if you get this in time please hold off till tomoorow any plans to visit.
If anything changes I'll let you guys know.
----- 13:50pm 25th -----
Pretty good results from the the CT scan with nothing too worrying there.
He's asleep now and the doctors have asked now to keep visitors to family only.
Looks like his SHOEI X-ELEVEN Kagayama (in red) did the trick.
----- 10:38am 26th -----
Sean's much more responsive this morning and the Doctors say this is a good sign.
They expect to remove the ventilator this morning.
His dad's asked to hold off visiting Sean till 5-6pm tonight, Seans's very tired and visiting is a bit of a strain. Would be good to leave this to his closer friends today.
But feel free to call into the ICU to visit Mel and Sean's family anytime. Swiss chocolates were mentioned as an ideal gift.
----- 05:30pm 27th -----
Well he's talking to Mel now, just a bit. But small steps.
Apparently they left his contacts in a few days too long, before they noticed them, must have used the non tinted ones that day. I wonder how much of the grunting and nodding he's done over the last few days was "get my bloody contacts out"!
Sean's dad rang before to ask that we leave visiting to Saturday as he's going into surgery tomorrow for about 5 hours and he'll be in recovery till Friday.
He said feel free to show up anytime Saturday, but if it gets too much they may have to throttle back a bit on the visiting.
----- 09:31am 28th-----
Latest info that Sean's dad has asked me to pass on to y'all.
"Good day yesterday, some whispered talking, all making sense. Still in ICU but probably into ortho ward tomorrow. Leg Doctor explained fractures and remedial approach - screws and plates and he was very reassuring - no problems anticipated but some risks - infection and clots. Goes to theatre about midday for 5-6 hours. Tomorrow will likely be a quiet one recovering. Expect him to pick up Saturday and welcome visitors in small numbers. Would love to to see you anytime but you might not see Sean. Thanks for your support. Merv"
----- 11:01am 28th -----
Ok I have to do it, I tried to resist, but it was all too much.
While we were there Sean's mum came running out to say that Sean was talking - and making sense! It was a special moment for the three of them and we were priviledged to be there.
Indeed, a special moment is Skeltars life.
----- 01:51pm 28th -----
Well you can all forget about my post last night. What a difference a day makes. As I still have not charged up my phone I just popped in here to give you all some good news.
He is VERY alert and talking ALOT today. :) When I told him that he had been in a bike accident on the takas he smiled and looked at me and called me a nob, as if HE would have a bike accident! Doesnt believe me at all. I asked him if he would like visitors at some stage (after operation) and he does, so I asked how many he would like, he replied 5 million, so I guess hes going to be slightly disappointed with that. He put his arm around me and rubbed my back... sweetie. Anyhow... hes a little confused, wanted to go off to a conference this week he said, when I told he couldnt, he just said "we will see". Think hes having me on a bit. So good news aye!!
Oh and I told him that cowpoos wanted me to give him a hug from him, so he said "well do it then" so I did and it hurt, so good on ya Ryan, hurting my man like that ;)
Will answer txt etc when I get it charged. Have loads of work to do (at work atm) and I might stay over here tonight and come over in the morning to see him.

Sean's parents have asked me to post to ask that people don't go up to the hospital just yet as Sean is still having tests at this stage and we won't be able to go in to see him just yet.
There will be plenty of time for visits, but just now there isn't anything for us to do but keep him in our thoughts. I'm sure it will be posted when visits will be good, but we don't want to fill the tiny waiting room at the moment.
Cheers all. :sunny:

Firstly, I made a mistake. After confering with Darkman it's been established his helmet was an XR1000, not the X-Spirit, but importantly it's still the red Kagayama.
Well I popped into to Mel and the Family as did a few others today including Str8jacket, Tazman, Crazylittleshit and Darkman.
We managed to piss off the staff there by all sneaking in and having a chat to Skel about his lack of personal skills at the moment, in that he wasn't up to much a chit-chat like normal.
Mel managed to get some good responses out of him though. The doctors are encouraging the family to spend time with to help him start to stay awake a bit longer, so they can get the breathing tube out sooner rather than later.
The ICU is closed 7am-9am and 2pm-4pm everyday and you won't get in their during that time. I'll check with Mel in the morning whether the staff are happy for the throng to start showing up tomorrow, Although if you want to go and give Mel and Skel's family some support I'm sure they won't mind.

Went to see him again tonight, but the doctors say he is responding better to close family than many different visitors, so might pay for an invite before goin down to see him.
He is responding well to Lissas visits, and even without being able to talk, is trying to get her not to smoke by makin faces when she goes to have one. Poor lass is having to tell him she is taking a wizz.
And I've just heard a wee first hand story from Flame, that his sense of humor has not been affected at all. Good news too, cos he aint got fuck all else goin for him. Just kidding bro, you're THE MAN!

Tonight Sean is very drowsy, so I just stayed and held his hand and read a dirty FHM magazine that someone had brought... really embarrassing when I turn the page and theres a half naked women on it and the nurse right behind me!! Sheezz didnt have anything else .... you guys need to read real stuff like womans day or something.
He gets worn out and tired from visits, so its best that until he is alert and able to interact that it is just family and close friends that visit. His parents and sister are doing really well under the circumstances. He hopefully will be having his legs operated on on Thursday.
Feel alot better today, because even though it is fleeting he does seem to be more alert when he is awake. Cant really say much more than that. Will try and keep you posted. Am on Seans computer, so I think he left it running and it looked like he was logged on, sorry it was just me.
Thanks for the txts guys its awesome. Thanks hels for the loan of the clothes, will get them back to you chick!

Been in the same situation as Skel, ventilator, ICU etc etc.
It all takes time, but a good attitude is paramount.
He probably wont remember much, but ICU staff are superb.
Best wishes.

So maybe he wasn't actually reaching for the ventilator tube all those times.....can you imagine the frustration !!
It was great to see him today, awake and eyes open. I mentioned coffee and how he hadn't had one for a few days - he replied with one word........beer !!
The nurse had an ear probe to take his temp and before she inserted it he looked sideways at me and gave a corny grin like where was she going to put it.
Nice one Skels. It's such a relief to see you on the mend.
Visits are obviously tiring for him, but despite pretending to be asleep for 10 minutes or so, when I said I had to go and would catch up over next couple of days, he grunted in acknowledgement, eyes still closed, resting but listening.

Well hes a worry. Every little reaction I get from him makes me so happy. So he smiled when I told him I was tired and if I could lie down next to him. And yes he said a couple of words to me... they were good too. I cling to them. It has only been a few days since the accident and he needs time to heal.
Hes still not out of the woods, there are alot of unknowns. I mean talking and nodding and opening his eyes sounds great, but he does this very briefly,he may very well have alot of damage up there in his noggin. And he is in a lot of pain.
I know its hard, you feel like you want to do something, we all feel like this. There is just nothing we can do, and its a horrible feeling. He has a great bunch of friends and I thank everyone who has helped me... you all rock, I mean it, I dont have much family over here, so I really appreciate it!!! It really is awesome to get people come by just to see how he is and to have a little natter with us as we wait to take our turn. (We have taken over a corner of the waiting room, and have lots of food on offer!) Sean also has friends who arent Kiwi Bikers, two very close ones who I think should also get some time with him.... because I really think he would love to have them there. Its hard to determine who gets to see him, because only two people can see him at a time, and each new visit tires him out. I'm not being grumpy I think its great those that have visited him have done, I am just trying to figure out who Sean would really like to see at this time, as he has no choice at the moment.
But hopefully.... fingers crossed, he will be in a ward soon.
The amount of time it takes for him to start to walk again is going to depend on his brain function, but also on his fractured back. We have to get all three of these things right, before he is right and its going to be along haul.
I dont live near the hospital, and am going to have to at some stage get back to work and the children. I will be making the trip to visit him alot in the afternoon and at the weekends... and that scares me, because I want to be with him always, so this week I am having with him is highly important to me.
But staying positive... he thought it was a great idea that I lie in the bed with him! And everyday is a new day, we just dont know what it is going to be like for him.

I just hopped on KB for no good reason and felt that nasty feeling in the gut that you get, when something bad has happened to someone you care about, when I spotted this thread.
I'm relieved that the thread details are about Skel*'s recovery process and not anything worse.
Is anyone able to enlighten me on the nature of his accident? I've gleaned that it seemed to have happened at Manfield. Can anyone elaborate?
Skel*: Thoughts are with you and Lissa. You had be bloody worried for a minute mate, and I'm thoroughly relieved you're still able to grumble at people! Good signs. I'll be watching this thread for updates on your condition, but in the meantime, no hurry, here's hoping you patch up well and make a full recovery.
Merv"

Nasty and I were able to pop in yesterday at midday to take Mel a survival kit (4 girlie mags and two bike mags) and to meet Seans mum and dad. As Mel said, they've taken over the waiting area outside the ward so we were all flopped there.
While we were there Sean's mum came running out to say that Sean was talking - and making sense! It was a special moment for the three of them and we were priviledged to be there.

He has no idea why he is there. I told him he is having an operation and wanted to know why. I said because of his legs (but didnt go into detail) and he said "that sounds bad", so I just told him he will fine. We have been telling him the last few days why he is there, it just must never of sunk in.

Hi Guys, well this is my first post on KB. I've been sitting back in the wings a bit just watching and reading. Have been meaning to say hello but never got around to it. I was going to introduce myseif to Skel as I brought an Aprilia, live in Lower Hutt and wanted to say hi. (I still will!!)
Next thing I see hes managed to lay himself up in hospital for a little while
Anyway Lissa I thought I would let you know that my partner works up in the hospital Theater (she the nice one that puts you to sleep) and she said to say to you that she will make sure she takes extra special care of Sean while he's with her. (See.... there are biker chicks everywhere!!). Shes been keeping an extra eye out for him. We biker types need to look after each other :niceone:

Well... The other good news is that he is now eligible to apply for membership of the Royal Society of Bionic Biking Bro's (NZ branch). Information on membership is difficult to find and they tend to be very secretive, but us outsiders might notice the odd clue like flash scarring, a bit of a limp or a very real enthusiasm for the truly important things in life. Last I heard some geezer called Gremlin was the Pres with another fullah called Jason Mckewen doing the V.P. duties. Now that I think about it there's a bit of a ginga theme going on there. Quite hard trying to work out what Skellybum would like posted and what he wouldnt. I think snoring is the least of this worries at the moment, and will give him a good reason to come back to kb and be grumpy, will give Jim2 a run for his money I think.

Sean's dad Merv has asked me to post this update, in Fatjim's absence.
Sean is out of ICU and in a ward - great news.
The operation took less time than anticipated which is also a positive thing, however the op and the move have knocked him about a bit and so the doctors have again restricted visits to family only. The doctors have said at this stage, the less stimuli and more rest the better.
Updates will continue as they are received. Hopefully he will be up for more visitors again next week.

In the first couple of months the less *thinking* one can do, the better: no TV, no reading books, no Sudoku puzzles, no going back to work, etc. Doing too much too soon will only prolong the recovery time. And concussion victims will not remember any advice medical staff give them at or immediately following their accident. That's why it's important for friends and family to help them along by reminding them what they shouldn't be doing.

Yup!
I think I am finally over the shock of the past week, because its 'recovery time'. I can be quite and pessimistic person sometimes but unfortunatly I have absolutely no control over how well or fast sean recovers. The best thing that I can do for him is to be postive. There is nothing I can say, or do that is going to heal Sean, except being there for him when I can and not Stimulating Him :calm:
Cheers everyone. Esp the people who have txt me, even though I have been unable to reply to everyone, each message means alot. Yea.. Anne not a slack tart anymore :) Hels.. you are the best!!!! :2thumbsup Drew and Vicki, Deano... Wonderful. Everyone who has come in and given us books, magazines, food even or just come to catch up... oh and big thanks to coffee man!!. You are all wonderful. Fatjim...you have gone out of your way to help us, but especially me in any way you can.... you have no idea how much everything you have done is appreciated. You have been there the whole time, from the moment you rang me from the hill last Sunday to today when you rang to see how he was. from me and Sean. THANK YOU!! I might not even make fun of you online from now on ;)

Off to the hospital soon, decided to have a bit of a sleep in today... not that I slept much. From tomorrow onwards I have to go back to Masterton, see the kids, get them back into a routine with school and kindy, and get back to work. Luckly I have a part time job, the week I have the children I will try to get over as much as possible after work and at the weekends... going to be hard saying goodbye to Sean today. :bye: :crybaby: But having a longish distance relationship I suppose we are use to it, except I cant talk to him on the phone everynight.
When he is ready for visitors I will let you know, not sure when that will be, but he is going to need some company. Even if you just sit with him.

All ops finished with so now its just healing and waiting time.
Much better this morning, less confused, more talkative and spent some time with Mel on the phone.

Wasn't sure if I should continue giving updates (you know Sean hates highjackers!), but this is the best and only way to let a whole lot of people know how Sean is getting along.
Left him yesterday he was quite confused, and didn't really recognize me, I wasn't really worried as he just seemed to be out of it, well he thought he was in Carterton most of the day (thats just crazy talk), and hadnt slept at all the night before.
This morning I get a phone call from Seans dad, Sean wanted to talk to me :) Seemed a little confused but a lot more with it. Hes not happy I am not going to see him tonight but I really have to buy a new car today after work (was suppose to do this last week, but with Seans accident it never came about), so will see how we go, I might pop over this evening, or else I am going over to see him straight after work tomorrow.
Not going to get too excited yet, as he seems to have these days were he is very with it and then seems to go backwards. But am hopeful, getting the phone call was amazing. :2thumbsup No more operations on his legs, and everything went well so I am pleased with that.
Thanks  Mel

Went to see Sean last night, spent quite alot of time with him, and was amazed at how alert he is, but he is still confused, and I wonder just how much he is going to remember of the next few weeks, if anything at all. Hes making plans, wants to move, he wants to go visit people.
He would love people to visit, but I am unsure how many he should have, so we are just asking him, or waiting for him to ask us who he would like to see. Drew and Vicki went to see him last night, kept pestering me to get them there, he had a good laugh with them too.

Mel, Unfortunatley as the Docs have probably told you that he will be confused for sometime as the brain recovers. I didnt even remember my wifes name or that i had 3 kids! I dont remember much about ICU or the first 2 weeks in the ward, good really as i had a week of tourettes (but i got my own room!!!). Sleeping is a major part of the brains recovery, i am 6 months since mine and still have to have nana sleeps during the day. Apparently the brain only repairs when its asleep. Dont know if you have been asked but at Middlemore i took part in a clinical test for brain injury where they gave me Insulin as they found it had good effects on recovery for the brain. May be worth while asking. Please pass my regards onto Sean and our thoughts are with you all.
Take care

Well I went for a visit last night on the way home from work and bumped into Str8jacket, Drew, Flame and the k'dogs.
Sean quite liked all the attention and put on quite a show but unfortunately he's a stubbon bugger and refuses to admit he needs to rest, Well his mates, we all let him down a bit last night and we all should have insisted we not hang around for so long. Sorry Sean.
The Nurses are PISSED! Sean didn't sleep well last night and was quite agitated. He needs rest as that is the only thing that allows him to heal. So from now on its by appointment only.
Dad's put his foot down and said that its close friends only and now you have to ring him first..If you don't have his number and considder yourself a "close friend" then PM me, I'll give you his details.

(Copied from other thread). Apparently Sean was very restless in the night, and something happened, not sure yet, but I think he may have tried to get out of bed. Visits are now by appointment, as I know you all want to make him laugh he actually isn't allowed very much stimulation.
Hes pretty pig headed about wanting to move, so I will sort him out tomorrow. :girlfight:

Sometimes that's the most difficult thing to handle. My worst memories of hospital are the overwhelming feeling of restlessness, almost claustrophobia, harder to manage than the pain. Sounds like he’s through the worst of it though, and making good progress. Give him my regards eh? And tell him not to mess with the staff too much, they’re a seriously scary bunch if you piss them off. <_<

Apparently Sean is allowed his laptop for short periods of time, so ONCE I find it then you will probably see him posting within the next few days. :)
Saw him last night, he was good, and could manage to get out of bed (with help) I think once his back is right he should be on the move a lot more, maybe on crutches even, or at least the wheelchair. I told him not to do wheelies in the hallway.
Oh I passed the Thursday Night Riders on the hill last night... awesome, I can see why Sean enjoyed those rides so much. Did you see the 3 or so Cop Cars at the top of the hill? I wondered why they were there.
