This tour is aimed mainly at people riding 250cc bikes. People riding larger motorcycles are more than welcome to attend but bear in mind that the main group speed is going to be 100 - 110k, so you may get bored. Everyone is wellcome to ride the speed they are comfourtable with, but to attend this event you must be comfourtable with open road riding.
THE PLAN:
Day 1:
Meeting at BP Autobahn in Papakura Auckland at 7:30 am - 25/04/08
Leaving 8:00am SHARP.
Proceeding to doing the Coro loop.
Having lunch at coroglen tavern and going to Whakatane for a night sleep.
Day 2:
Leaving Whakatane by 8:30 (breakfast from 8 - 8:30) and proceeding to riding around the East Cape and coming back to Whakatane for a Night sleep.
Day 3:
Leaving Whakatane 8:30 ( breakfast 8:00 - 8:30) and proceeding to do a reverse Coro Loop and going back to Auckland.
DETAILS:
Responsible Behaviour on the road is expected from all riders attending the tour.
High Visibility Vests are encouraged but not compulsory.
Approved Motorcycle gear is Highly desirable and encouraged. Please do not come to the event wearing plain jeans and plain jeans jacket with no protection at all. At least wear kevlar jeans. I DON'T WANT to pick up bones and skin from the road should someone fall of their bike.
Event is weather permitting, which means that the tour will be canceled only if heavy rain warnings are at place. Light showers will not affect us.
Fuel Stops will be about every 100 - 150km to accomodate for people with small range fuel tanks.

Holy crap..
I just looked at the map at that Gisbourne loop and I am literally drooling..
That thing looks amazing! I reckon it'll take alot longer than google's predicted 7 hours though... Coro loop took us like 6 or 7 hours and it's tiny compared to that thing.
I envy the folk that live in Gisbourne... I can't wait!

Will check if I'm allowed out after the trackday this friday (and burning all my brownie points).
Long days for my knees on the CBR but then rest stops every 150km while people gas up might make it survivable. Been wanting to do Coro and East cape for soooo long so doing both would kick total arse.

The Old Man's suggestions (typed himself):
Day 2 is a long day and is the main reason for the journey. This day can be shortened by about 100km by staying in Opotiki instead of Whakatane - obviously depends on accommodation, but this should not be a problem. If some think this makes day 1 too long (+ 50km) consider dropping or shortening the Corro loop - you can do that on any one day trip.
Vary the route on the way back. Why not do SH34 to Lake Rotorua then around the north side to Tauranga Direct road (SH36), over Kaimais on SH29 Te Aroha Gordon road to Paeroa (see the big ass bottle), through the Karangahake Gorge to Whangamata, then back over Kopu Hikuai hill and home - via Miranda is 467 km (from Opotiki).

Nagash
1st April 2008, 21:36
Yea , im thinking leave whakatane like 7 that should be enough time surely. what do you think ?
Yeah i'll reckon that'll do the job.
@Discotex, you've never done the Coro loop...? You're gonna love it haha.
@Choco, an extra 50km's is nothing and I don't think anyone would object to doing 50k's, I think. But I reckon we should stick with staying in Whakatane for both nights for conveniences sake. Like, I'm hoping this place Tod has picked out is a good place to stay cause if we have to go from a great place to a place like the one in Whangarei again I won't be happy.. honestly, you just wanted to hit that old dude.
And normally i'd agree with doing a different route but i've done the route you're Dad has suggested. It's boring.. Paeroa is just scary (there's L+P flags, signs, billboards.. it's everywhere!) It's a pretty straight line unfortunately. And I never consider going back the same way as the same route.. the difference between an uphill decreasing radius lefthand corner and a downhill opening right hand corner are imense and unless you're there to look at the trees, it's gonna be a completely different ride each way. This is my opinion and everyone else should have their say aswell.
You're Dad's a smart man! I'm just a negative bugger who don't like change.. unless it's impromptu on the day :D
And good to see you guys expressing interest again! It was great to ride with you last time, and will be to do so again. I wonder where the West Cape is...?
[Edit] And to Renegade, i'll make an effort of doing that for yah. I just sorted out my new speedo cable this afternoon :D I can tell how fast i'm going now! Damn.. time to slow down.. Now for that damn battery..
I had a mother come up to me as I was leving work with her toddler, telling the kid to watch me start my bike and drive away.. having to push start it was just embarrasing...

Can't hurt to have another opinion out there :bleh: and from past experience parents always have this creepy way of being correct...
Interesting to see you say it's boring; old man told me they were good roads and that the gorge was a pretty nice ride and my wee Motorcycle Atlas agrees .
Anyone else done this route?
Nagash
1st April 2008, 21:57
Now, the Gorge is absolutely amazing! Albeit only about 10 minutes long and usually with traffic. But it is definately a sight to see, but you see.. the route is mainly down state highway (2... I think) and it's very straight, cause the Gorge is just after Waihi, and Waihi is where you turn off to do the reverse Coro loop. If people were knackered by that time I would recommend they do the Gorge and just make it home in about an hour and half, but they'll be home before 12am.. that's what's good about the Coro loop. It's a healthy 6 hours more of riding :D
All up to how people feel on the day, as I said I like impromptu on the spot change. We're not gonna follow that exact route when we get down to it, we never do.. Just good to have an initial plan and work it out more when we get to it.

True and anyway, on the spot changes are much more fun!
But it just seems a bit of a shame that we use up 2 days of a long weekend doing the same loop twice, which can be done in a single day anyway.
Why not use routes that we wouldn't usually be able to do (because of distance/time restraints etc) and do a normal weekend 2-day standard-then-reversed corro loop another time?
Just an idea, but either way we still get an epic three day ride so MEH!
Oh just a quick note: that extra 50km between Whakatane and Opotiki turns into 100km because we have to do it twice: so thats another hour of riding added to an already long day

Nagash ir right. The gorge is breath taking and absolutely fantastic - but its only 10 - 15 min of it and stuck in traffic sux coz cars slow right down too. the rest of it is boring straight , we did it a month ago with gtr boy and nagash, so amm yea I think at this stage orifinal route is good.
The second day riding from whakatane to whakatane is 560km. easyly doable in a day - even on such a curvy route. if we allow ourselfs 12 hours of chilled out riding with plenty of stops we will be sweet. I'm thinking 7am till 7pm. 12 hours is enough for 560 km.
choco those 50km (which are actually 45km) will be done anyway. If we cut them from the second day we will be doing them the third day. Plus they are not extra curvy or full of corners - a couple of nice straights , a few easy 65k and 75k corners and we are back to base in whakatane.
O and we will have the advantage of leaving some of our stuff in whakatane in our rooms so we will not be so heavy. :)

lake rotorua idea looks like a good way to get lost. I don't like getting lost. Can I make a wee suggestion for this one..
This ride we have alot more distance to cover than the Cape Reinga ride and in the same amount of time. Especially day 2.
Can we cut down on the stopping?
Last time everytime we stopped and waited for the rear to catch up everyone would take their gear off and have a good yarn, all good and well but it took bloody ages!! Day 2 it was night fall before we got in.. so.. like.. bums on seats this time yeah?
Other then that, i'm real keen!

Only 3 options I can think of.
1. Keep the average speed down so the rear can keep up. Not so good for the faster riders but then the bigger the speed gap the bigger the risk of someone pushing too hard anyway.
2. Have lots of mini stops. Say every 30mins pull over for a no-helmets-off stop to gather the bunch back up. Make it clear it's not a ciggy break and as soon as everyone is accounted for push off again.
3. Break up into a fast and a medium group (no slow group as no-one would want to be in it ;)) each with a lead and TEC. That way each group can do their own thing to a large degree. Obviously the med group will get in later.
A combination of all three to different degrees for different types of roads (twisties vs straights) may help.

I wouldnt say racetrack, no. its a place with beautiful views and all sorts of corners, tight ones, fast sweeping ones, uphill, downhill. its a great place for practicing skills if you are not pushing yourself beyond your own limits. its true that people have come off their bikes on it but its due to pushing beyond their own limits. if you ride sensibly, you will have fun with no major things to worry about. its a one of the best rides on the north island you can go on. recommend it to anyone.

Hey guys, just been doing abit of research on the Gisbourne Loop and word is that there isn't much in terms of gas from Opotoki to Te Aroroa which is a stretch of 157km of very twisty roads.
If you reckon your bike won't be able to cover that distance i'd recommend bringing a small Jerry can or getting some to carry one for you.
Most bikes should be able to handle that but just incase..
Also, there are road works on this stretch of road so that means Gravel riding for bits of it, if you've never ridden on gravel before, go find some and practice. If you don't know where any is, Pm me and i'll show you some good (or shit) spots.
Corners are tight and unforgiving, wild stock roams the streets and road conditions aren't the best so just play it safe when we get to it. Bring a clear visor if you have one because it's highly likely will be getting in by night time on the second day.
Not trying to scare you or nothing, it's an amazing stretch of road and it'll be wicked fun as long as you ride your own ride and don't push yourself beyond your abilities radda radda all that mumbo jumbo. You should all know the drill..

Am keen to do the tour over the long weekend. Any indication of numbers (riders) and costs?
Last three day tour we did was 14 ppl and some couldnt come so this one I'm thinking about 20 people. rough estimate.
Cost - 25bux per person per night for accomodation so that 50 bux there. about 50 - 60 bux for food ( depends on how much you eat.
Petrol you have to calculate yourself depending on your fuel consumption but I will tell you that for the distance that we will be covering for the three days - about 1400km I will need no more than $150.
That means you should take at least $400 to be sure you are covered for unexpected events. Also take some extra cash with you because sometimes the plastic cards dont work everywhere.
Look forward to seeing you on the tour. Dont forget to sign up on the calendar event coz thats what we will be using for booking the accomodation.
See you on the road.

P.S. if you are coming on the tour can you PM me your cell number together with your real name. It will save us time on the day.

Schweet! Just got back home last night, and now i find this! :)
I am keen in principle, but will have to sort out how this slots in with other things a little closer to the time. That is a long ass way in 3 days!
Yea , im thinking leave whakatane like 7 that should be enough time surely. what do you think ?
Indeed, that'll be a big haul for a day. Have just been working down in Whakatane for the past couple of weeks, gets dark around 7 (i think...) with daylight savings shifted, but it was light at 6:15 driving to work, so make it an early start and we'll be right :niceone:
I'll follow you to hell and back Toto!
But I guess Gisborne will do :bleh:
I'l get the old man to view the plan to see if he has any suggestions like last time.
Badger you better come or i'l be at the back all by myself
I'm trying! Will see how things go...
You may not be buddie, depends onfinances but here's hoping.
Try to make it mate, will be awesome to ride with you again!
The Old Man's suggestions (typed himself):
...
- Choco Senior.
Choco Junior: Toto/others, whatcha think?
Much good ideas. Drove home through the Kaimai's yesterday, wishing the whole way i was on my bike. They are some lovely corners, but the problem is there are biiiiiiiiiig boring straight out that way too. Long and boring to the point that i got to the end of them and forgot what i was supposed to do with the wheel to get around this corner thing that was in front of me (numerous times). These might be okay for a bigger bike that can whip along them at a great rate of knots, but us poor sods who top out around 110-120 (if we want our engines to survive the trip), that is a foooooooooookin long boring bit of road.
Can you please take very good note on how far the gas stations are? I want to do it at some stage, but i only have a 150km range on my bike - i think there are places in the east cape that are futher than that?
So carry a jerrycan, has saved many a butt in the past.
Agreed and agreed. Whakatane is a nice little place to stay, and a nice pub to eat and drink at too  prettymuch every road into town is just long and straight, with gentle sweepers (with the odd exception). they may be km's, but they arent hard km's. OPlus leaving gear in whakatane will be a Godsend. i nearly destroyed my poor saddlebags on the cape run :weep:
hey man, was sorry to hear about your wrist, you'll be missed on the next trip. I am well excited will get to give my new bike a good drive before winter settles in. :Punk:

Even if you don't change the plan for this ride, you guys should just file that away for future reference. If you're planning another weekend ride (I like your style) then the road from Kawerau around Rororua's lakes and up Pyes Pa Rd to Tauranga is a legend ride. Pyes Pa is one of "those" rides with very little traffic. I kind of like the look of SH33 Rotorua-Te Puke too but haven't done that one. Getting lost isn't that easy but hell. who'd care anyway:)

I don't think it's too bad at all guys. Nasty just completed the Herceptin Round NI Ride (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=65315&highlight=herceptin) on 13 March which did Opotiki to Gisborne in a day. She hates gravel of any kind. although she mentioned it was their longest day and hardest ride she didn't say much about the gravel except that there were roadworks. I'm sure if it had been really bad I would certainly have heard about it!
Yes gas is an issue and when you do find it there's about an extra 15c/litre on the cost. You're going to have a great day.

Pyes Pa/Tauranga direct road isn't a bad ride, but it's been getting very busy over the last year or so, and overtaking opportunities are limited on a little bike. :(
I think they should have left a couple of k's of gravel to discourage the boat-towing riffraff :jerry:
There are heaps of nice roads around the Rotorua lakes and Eastern BOP, and lots of big green Transit signs, even on some smaller roads, to help you not get lost.

Hows the FXR?
Yeah I'm fine, if it was a broken something it would be my neck or back. Thanks god I had my hoodie under my jacket (that supported my neck from breaking) + my bag that supported my back.
The driver is lucky that the cops came soon after thats all I got to say..
But the cops were really nice aye, they explained everything really good and they told me that she was stupid for stopping in the middle of the road for no reason.

Also my Insurance compay "NAC" (which I have full insurance with) said that I'll have to pay the access(spelling) of $800 because I was at fault because I should of been able to stop if she put her brakes straight on suddenally.
Not what the cops told me..

Also, shorter stops are all good, but bear in mind us poor sods at the back on GN's dont exactly have comfy seats!
my bike doesnt have the greatest comfort level either, but thats not what bikes are about.
Is anyone else keen to do the 1st day and ride back to auckland and then do the last day too?

But if we're at the back we could have breaks as much as we like :shifty:
Maybe like Doscotex suggested we can have 2 groups...

That's not always the case. If the person in front was reckless (and you were 2 seconds behind and under the speed limit) they can be at fault. 99% of the time though the story is that you were following too close and speeding. Especially on a bike.
sinister, if the cops said she was at fault they will have documented that in the incident report. Ring the police and ask for the file and who they determined was at fault.
If they say it's the other party at fault then tell your insurance to check again.

The cops actually said that they have to put/and have put that it was my fault in the accident report. They said that from their point of view that shes a "stupid fuck" (similar words) and why would you suddenly stop in the middle of the open road when no cars or anything were in front of her.
But by "the law" it says that I'm at fault because I should be able to stop, but what kind of bull-shit is that. What kind of terriost made that.

Fook mate! :eek5: glad to hear you are okay tho!
Tis unfortunate that you've been deemed 'at fault', tis a lesson for all of us that you can never fully fathom the stupidity of others than will likely land us in the shit in the end. Hope it all works out in the end and you're back out there soon!

Ahhh well if they put that in their report you're screwed.
As for why someone might stop for no reason... Cat runs out.. Gearbox locks up.. Crap on the road you can't see... The list goes on.
But by "the law" it says that I'm at fault because I should be able to stop, but what kind of bull-shit is that. What kind of terriost made that.
It's actually pretty obvious (for your own safety) that you should be able to stop quicker than the person you're following. If you couldn't stop it's 99% likely you were following too close or too fast.
If you were being followed by a cage and you realised your tyre was about to burst you'd want them to have enough room to stop without running you down eh? :)

Will check if I'm allowed out after the trackday this friday (and burning all my brownie points).
Long days for my knees on the CBR but then rest stops every 150km while people gas up might make it survivable. Been wanting to do Coro and East cape for soooo long so doing both would kick total arse.
I too would love to do this ride but i don't have enough brownie points. If you can get a day pass I'll be keen to do the coro loop, maybe even join the whole group on the friday and come back via kopu instead of going down to whakatane.

Yup, there is a washer that acts as a spacer just outside the speedo gearbox where the wheel actually connects to the gearbox (and onto the cable and so on). The spacer got grounded down so much that the part that connects to the wheel doesn't engage and therefore no reading.
Washers dimensions:
Diameter of inside hole = 2006 20cent coin (no shit.)
Total diameter of washer = 13.5cm
Thickness it needs to be: 2006 10cent coin (again, how convenient!)
Is it do-able?

Yup, there is a washer that acts as a spacer just outside the speedo gearbox where the wheel actually connects to the gearbox (and onto the cable and so on). The spacer got grounded down so much that the part that connects to the wheel doesn't engage and therefore no reading.
Washers dimensions:
Diameter of inside hole = 2006 20cent coin (no shit.)
Total diameter of washer = 13.5cm
Thickness it needs to be: 2006 10cent coin (again, how convenient!)
Is it do-able?
Ground down? Too much gravel drags eh?
and what has the world some to when we are measuring shit in coin widths and diameters? :bleh:
13.5cm is much bigger than i had anticipated, doubt we'll have anything lying around to make it outof. Sorry dude! try a bolt's n bits store, they may have something that'll do the trick.
A GN corro loop maybe?
I've learned quite a lot since my first one and I think my uphill skills have increased too, but we will see on this trip weather I know it well enough to lead a ride.
HELL YEAH! :headbang:
you'd be up to leading the ride mate, especially if it's Ginny's!
I might chuck out a thread when we get back looking for interest, it would be sweet to have a line of GN's weaving through the twisties :Punk:
With a Hyobag in it's rightful place at the back... :dodge:

How about the just remove the original front end and swap it for a GSXR's? USD forks, clip on handle bars and twin discs should make a bit of a difference. Plus then the front end will be lower so you could put a screen on and get a more aerodynamic shape.

BP Autobahn is dead easy to find.
Coming from Auckland you go on State Highway 1 heading South and just keep going down and then just after the turn off to Karaka there is a few blue signs with the classic, Gas station, toilets, food symbols etc. Turn off down there and it's like a massive rest stop.. You'll always find heaps of bikers down there especially in the morning so just look for 250's or ask around till you find someone from kiwibiker.

I'm on the shore, I see a few others are too - anyone interested in meeting up over this side first?
Cheers

Gravel anyone :shifty:
Only gravel is out to the Lighthouse and that is no drama but take care of the camber of the road in some places.
Gas maybe your problem. IMO fill up at Opotiki (there are some later but I always gas up there) and then again at Te Araroa (check when this is open). This should get you to the Lighthouse and round to Gisborne (maybe lol...I ride a Beemer so gas is not a drama usually).
Have a great trip, may see you on the road.
