View Full Version : Doing the runner

This has been one of the more interesting threads to follow. It is funny how - the old guys are the ones kicking up the stink. These are the people in the same age bracket of my old man. I remember great stories about his driving escapades. Driving Drunk, over loading cars, driving home with lights off etc. Funny how it was okay for them to do it? It is also funny how these same people can justify their 'sins' and denouce others for admitting theirs. At the end of the day - it is illegal to speed whether it is 120kph or 320kph.....
I ask you - is 60-65kph in a residential area - worse or better than 200kph on a rural empty back road?
I see enough idiots on this planet who can't control their vehicles at near pedestrian speeds. Plus - stats show that over 50% of all accidents happen at intersections anyway and only country people die on country roads!
Fuck I am never going to call Aaron stupid - my exploits are hardly private.....all I say is choose your time and place - and take your medicine like a man when/if it gets dispensed.
Yes, running from a cop is stupid, aside from it being illegal, but most of us have done something illegal at some time or another in our lives and gotten away with it. I won't comment on whether I have done it or not, or whether I will in the future.
Meh - each to their own - I just think - those in glass houses.

Yeah and you're a perfect example of humanity yourself. We're all different.
The one thing everybody here, on both sides of the argument is missing is that not everyone on the road drives/rides with the same level of committment to improving their own vehicle control skills as some of the people on Kiwi Biker do.
Even then you factor in random acts of God and P, and you are not going to get away with it all the the time. Why run from a cop at warp factor 9, putting yourself at risk, and the "average" driver who just crossed the centre line around that blind corner just ahead YOU know you can take at 210 easily?
Is it because you and the others advocating doing a runner don't have the guts to face up to making a screw up and getting busted? You know: Personal responsibility. The mentality behind doing a runner is twisted at best, and not because "Saint" Jim says so. One rule for the bullet proof young uns and another for the battered oldies seems to be the point you're trying to make. Irrespective of the fact that most of the old bastards on here take a while to warm up in the morning because their battered hardware is frozen up again.
All we're trying to do is let you know that you can't get away with a "Fuck you I'm bulletproof" attitude forever. We know because we didn't. If you ignore us, don't expect a friendly pat on the head, and a "there, there, it'll be alright in the morning", because it won't be.
Most of the vehicles we ride and drive are capable of being driven safely at far greater speeds than they are. We don't take driving and riding seriously in NZ. It isn't taught in a serious fashion, and there's no obligation to increase you skills or knowledge as time goes by.
Yeah i have said i get what ya saying, the whole saint thing is just the impresion i get...so dam prechy. as for the admit i "screwed up"I do everything on my bike intentionaly, i dont........'whoops i did a wheelie i scwered up'. I speed(sometimes) but i know when im doing it, i wheelie when i want to and think its safe. but... hay somtimes ya get caught...and sometimes ya get away. And i never said i was bulletproof, anyone who rides a bike knows how careful ya have 2b ....dam cars

...i have a wife and 2 kids of my own and so help me god i would slit any mother fuckers neck that hurt them, but im not going to start hunting down and killing people just coz 1 day it MIGHT happn.
at the end of the day thats life.
place :2thumbsup Cya im gone, and hay as many of you in your deludedness(is that a word?) think perhaps one day some copper in a car will catch me :shake:(dont think so) but thats my opinion,
Sort of a bit of a contradiction there Aaron. One the one hand you say you have a wife and kids you would kill for, if anyone hurt them. The next thing you say is you are prepared not only to hurt them, but possibley other people as well. Remember, its not just your judgement that comes into play, but that of anyone else on the road.

I hope it does - debate is healthy. Entrenched attitudes are what kill a great number of people in NZ on the roads every year.
Btw - I didn't know Kawasaki made a ZZR100. ;)
Hahahahaha what a dork I am, I knew there was something wrong with it when I rode it the other day, goes heaps better now that I have repowered it with my keyboard. :niceone: Cheers

Time and place for everything, fellas. Perhaps people get the wrong end of the stick and assume that some of us "born in 75" ones go out hunting the 5-0 for sport. Just cos I say I'd always consider the runner, doesn't mean to say that after I've considered it that I always run, otherwise what would be the point in wasting the mental energy considering when I could be concentrating of winding up the bike (in the wet, past the primary school at 3pm!)? Jeez, I'm not suicidal, nor deliberately homicidal!!
I've never been stopped on the bike, and that's usually because in conditions where a runner isn't on, I'm not usually doing anything too dodgy!! And the handful of times where I was definitely chased then I usually had such a headstart and/or was so close to home that it would be difficult to qualify as failing to stop for red and blues cos the red and blues were never in the picture - makes you wonder why they even started, but I appreciate they do have to try.
I admit to one time that I did very deliberately engage in illicit activity specifically to get a reaction, and subsequent pursuit, and as much fun as it was at the time - in hindsight I wouldn't be so stupid as to try that again. Not that it was a problem getting away, but in the cold light of day the conditions were completely wrong - not to mention the fact that I deliberately wound it up to the governor to wave for the laser gun - and I would accept any criticism thrown my way for that. We all do things that we regret, and I'd accept spuds critique of this incident anytime (I apologise if it was you with the laser gun when i gave you the bird or in the pursuing Commo S :))
The others were encountered in the course of my usual riding and same place, same batchannel - bring it on. I don't exceed the speed limit by accident on the bike, but I don't go asking for a chase either. Hell, I'm only on a 400, a Commo S would give it to it at high speed on the mway.

I'm not proud of this (so why am I telling you?) - but yeah - I've done a runner - once.
The week prior to doing a "runner" I was ticketed for doing 83 K's in a 50 by a copper who'd trailed me in a mufty (spelling?) for 10-15 K while I was on my way down to Queenstown. I stuck to the speed limit going into a township (100 down to a 50 KMPH), stayed within the limit in the township but as I left the township I accelerated about 300 metres before the 100 KMPH sign. Still he didn't pull me,nor did I have any clue he was an undercover cop. He waited. In fact it must have been at least another 10 K's into the 100 KMPH that he did eventually decide to pull me over. The max speed he recorded me doing was 103 in a 100. The git did me for accelerating too early and ticketed for 83 in a 50. Anyway - this pi$$ed me off no ends.
The following week I was riding through Sumner in Christchurch. As I approached a blind corner a police car came from the other direction, I glanced down at my speedo - 66 KMPH. The bugger put his lights on, gave me a hand gestrure that resembled a stop signal and slowed down - I didn't. I accelerated slightly and rode off around the corner and took a sharp right just after it. I rode up a hill a little and pulled into a cul-de-sac adjacent to a public park. My train of though was if he finds me I'll pretend I didn't do a runner, I simply didn't think he was after me( Iridium visor - how would he know that I didn't see his hand gesture) otherwise why would I pull into a dead end. I got off my bike and removed my helmet just in time to see the police car speed off down the road.
Maybe he wasn't after me, maybe he needed to turn around in a hurry and get somewhere else.....
Sorry - hand duly slapped - great adrenaline rush though. People of my age should know better blah, blah, blah, blah :eyepoke:

With you all the way bud, top marks. Be proud you got away with it, you deserved to. And they wonder why we don't have much respect for them? Mind you, I did appreciate being let off for doing 133 k's, that upped my respect big time.

Is that "doing a runner" though? Are we talking the same as say taking off on a crowded street and possibly endangering others? I use to live in Nelson, and occasionally didnt always stop, but got to the stage where cops knew where I lived and just came and visited me. I was working in a bike shop at the time and half the time were just checking out what I was riding! Anything from a Honda Bros, to an RC30 to a Goldwing 1500! Sneaky buggers too, use to know who was riding what and what had been traded where, often they were enthusiasts as well, but sometimes wondered if there intentions were all good or just sussing out what they should be looking for next, you know, oh I see so and so traded in his 600 for a new GSXR750, blue and white was it? arrgh, not sure thought he had a black Kawasaki :sneaky2:
Even had a visit from an officer because I'd parked my bike between two cars with the back tyre up against the kerb, and apparently hadnt left room for someone to get their car out!! I'm like, WTF, youre kidding, right? Nope, asked him if was talking to whoever owned the vehicle parked at the other end of the car in question, coz they must have parked to close as well. He waffled on about how you werent suppose to park like that, and should park like a car, take up the whole car park. Next day, see a copper parked with his bike, back tyre up against kerb! :brick:

Pretty sure it was only the HZ that came with RTS, the HJ had the thicker sway bar but still had the old HQ top arm mounting position.
Could be wrong but thats my 2 cents worth of 'anorak' knowledge.

Along with the Ventora there was an earlier upmarket version of the Cresta, the Viscount, had quad headlamps and woodgrain interior trim, etc. The 3.3 Crestas and later Victors were the car to beat at the B&H 500 and remained so until the Valiant Chargers came along.
While on the topic of oddball 6 cylinders, anyone ever see a Chrysler 180? It was a french Simca, bigger than a Hunter but smaller than a Valiant, and it had the 215 or 245 Hemi motor.
About the time the V8 Torana (XU2) got canned in the supercar scare, Chrysler were rumoured to be building their own hot rod Hunter with a Valiant 6 - An E49 Hunter kinda boggles the mind...

My brother had an anglia (sp?) with a ford V6 for a while, farkin cool. Oh the memories. Now days its all phhhaaarrpppp wooosh, phaaaarppp, woosh. The times they are a changin'.
Hell, thats still only the same age as some of the cars being talked about and younger than some of the cars  :killingme :killingme

$25K on a frikkin' Sunbird? I've had two, one cost $200, the other was given to me as the owner didnt want it leaking oil on his drive, sadly they werent 308's, were dodgy old 1900 Opels

you guys seriously needed some aussie cars in the 70's.... thats the reason there are so many boy racers over here now... in Oz, you still have people doin gup HQ's, XY's etc coz they are still around and easy to get parts for!
Yeah good on ya' mate.
I had an HT Premier in OZ,most of the parts I bought for it came from NZ because they couldn't be got in OZ.
Come out to Waiuku or just about any other counrty town, you'll see plenty of HQs,HZs,ect.
My nextdoors have a very nice EH ute.
During the 70s there were heaps of OZ cars here as well as Pom stuff.
It was the jap imports of the late 80s,plus fuel costs that got all these kids in jap stuff.
I actualy feel sorry for them(NOT) :msn-wink:

After my accident my father bought it for me for $5k, so cost me nought! It was quite a cool car as far as Sunbirds went, never punted it down the 1/4 but saw off numerous WRX's, EVO's, (insert most jappa turb's), HSV's etc. Of course this was just straight line running, chuck any corners in and all of the above would have destroyed it. My fav was the charger, lowered, black, pumped out guards front and rear to accomodate 285's at the back and 245's at the front. The engine was steel braced to the body and as a result it would shake itself, all blacked out (when heavy tints were sweet) and an exhaust that ended, um somewhere short of where it should've. Heh heh, left so much rubber on the roads in that thing, an absolute nightmare in the wet. Looked and sounded fucken hard.
