Tony Iommi's guitar teacher?
OK...the link to the Heavy Metal part of the clue is made. Now, you need to think about why Tony's sound came about...and why it might never have.

Tony lost the tips of two fingers in an industrial accident the day that he was due to end work at some Birmingham factory. He was due to go on tour with his {then) band but couldnt due to the injury. He spent a lot of time recovering and trying to play guitar again but was in a lot of pain. He made "fingertips" for himself and had to detune his guitar (to the famous "diminished fifth" devils tuning) so as to be able to play at all. Less string tension meant he could still play but in different keys.
edit: Yup, Django Rheinhart: Romany, guitar player, injured hand.
MisterD
27th March 2009, 13:00
django rheinhardt?
Bingo! You didn't even need the further prompting.
Tony Iommi nearly gave up playing guitar after he lost the tips of his fingers but was disuaded by his boss using Django (who lost the use of a couple of fingers in a fire) as an example...

The answer is Sam Bass. Sam had no time for Samuel Colt's .45. Six bullets won't do you any good if you can't hit a barn door at more than 25 yards. He carried a single shot Dragoon pistol and when called out to a showdown, in which the combatants usually started about 100 yards apart and walked towards each other, usually drawing at about 25 yards, he would casualy pull his old Dragoon from his belt, line up the 13 inch barrel and shot them dead when they were 75 yards away.

Either I need another clue to narrow the field, or I'm barking up the wrong tree - Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper were both co-writers on Easy Rider

YES! Well done MisterD, Peter Fonda is the man. The clue was "fond". Seems like I'm in a hippie timelock at the moment. :D Incidentally Terry Southern helped write the screenplay too.
