Speaking of roll charts and GPS thingames I've just updated the DB1k page (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/DB1k.html) such that there is a link to the latest roll chart and two GPS files. Can people download files/upload files to GPSr from the page and let me know if there are any problems. I think everything is OK but ya never know.
I'm especially interested in the GPS route files and making sure they work with various GPSr's out there.
Cheers R
No GPS here but roll chart is ok, fitted into my roller fine. Thanks.

Sweet that is good to know.
All - There was an error with the gps files on the web page re uploading to a GPSr but I have sorted that now. Hopefully all it working but let me know if there are any more issues. I'm especially keen for somebody with a in car type GPSr (peach you zumo would be a good test) to have ago at uploading the routes.

There are a few threads about them about that you should have a look at. I'd recommend a Etrex Legend HCx or GPSMap60 Cx (if you have a couple of extra dollars) meself.

You'll be pushing it to get a good one and find a way to mount it for $400.
To me a good one has high sensitivity chip (H), colour screen (C) and expansion slot (X) for loading a memory card in it.
I do like my Legend HXC but with out some kind of vibration damping mount it did suffer vib induced shutdowns.

I am booked on a ferry departing Wellington at 8:00am Friday 2nd Jan.
Guess I will meet you all at WereWolfs.
In the last 2 weeks I have travelled about 6-700 kms of gravel roads on the XT400:
Lake Waikaremoana and inner Gisborne. Kind of a loop around Te Urewera National Park. Also went to Cape Rienga via as many gravel/sand roads as I could fit in. Bike seems pretty reliable.

TA noticed a slightly misleading point in the DB1k route files. I've just corrected the files and uploaded them again as of about 2 mins ago. If you have downloaded a file/uploaded to a GPS already I'd suggest that you download/upload them again.

Yas need one of the high tech home made super damping gps mounts  Not had a single shut down though it did fall off on one rather interesting crash as you know.

Had some questions asked about the roll chart and after some checking I found there was a distance reset at cell no. 137 that should not have been there. So for those that have already downloaded and printed out the roll chart I would suggest you reprint the last page or you get a marker pen and redo the total distances for cells 137 to 139 (three cells only). The new version of the pdf is on my web site now.

Can you tell me how you made this please, where you sourced those rollers etc.
I made one for the CCA last year and this one looks way way better. You must have some engineering skills there....lol
How and where does it mount on your bike?
Some more detail would help and then I can copy it or if you left a bit of detail for me please?

Howdy, hope u r recovered from Saturday LOL.
I took some ideas from BusaJim and other sources.
1. The auxiliary rollers are garden irrigation pipes rolling over some wire, this is the bit that puts the chart close to the top
2. the main rollers came from a desk lamp which I wasn't using, is where the chart attach
3. the brand of the 'case' is 'Sistema' (as seen on the pic) bought from Woolworth supermarket is big enough to fit the chart but just, half cm more would be nice but it works fine (obviously haven't done the ride yet, build it for CCA but BM experience decided wasn't for me to do it)
4. The mount:
4.1 initially I mounted it to the bark buster (left) on the bold that attach to the (near) center of handlebar using some bit of aluminum and plastic (last to give it some dampening) it worked alright but
4.2 for the next one I'd like a position more dakar like so I'm yet to work on the mount. Tried something last week but it was too week and not sure it will hold. You may have better place on your bike for the mount and there is a lot of info on Advrider thumpers around that for kTm
The trickier bit for me was to do the holes so there run parallel since the plastic is really stiff its prone to cracks (wasted one on the process :blank:)
I'll post some more pics if that helps or send them to you if no one else is interested :chase:

WW has put up an event on the Calendar here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&ea=attend&e=1787) for the BBQ on the eve of the DB1k (2nd feb) at his place.
WW and family are providing salads (BYO meat and drinks) and he needs an indication of numbers so please put your name on the BBQ event (in addition to the appropriate DB1k Calendar event). Remember there is a gold coin koha for the salads.
First post will be updated with the link as well.

On another note, was just having a little chuckle thinking about torches.
Seems that after trying out the super light of NigelP's and getting all keen to get one, I've about run out of time and money so there be no super light on my helmet this round.
If you don't know the way and are using roll charts I'd still recommend at least a small torch on ya helmet to light the chart, or maybe you can back light it somehow :niceone:
I'll be using the GPS so will take a small torch in case I need it for repairs etc but won't have one stuck to the helmet this year.

I know the one, called a GPS12 that looks like below (or GPS12XL which looks similar)?
<a href="http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:VhS7ZwbUViS8gM:http://www.n3gz.com/mygarmin.jpg/mygarmin-full.jpg"><img src="http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:VhS7ZwbUViS8gM:http://www.n3gz.com/mygarmin.jpg/mygarmin-full.jpg" border="0"></a>
Have you got a cable for it? You need a cable with a propriety Garmin plug (round plug with four holes in a square for the pins on the GPS) and a serial plug on the other end. I think Map World (http://www.mapworld.co.nz/index.html) sells them otherwise they seem to be available from the web i.e. here (http://www.triginstruments.co.nz/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=551&osCsid=46493bd07e22fa40e68b96f13d90c38c).
From what I have read on the Garmin website about the GPS12 (http://www8.garmin.com/products/gps12/spec.html) and the GPS12XL (http://www8.garmin.com/products/gps12/spec.html), they can hold routes i.e. like the files I have created for the DB1k but they can only hold limited amounts of data.
Happy to help and can probably spare a hour or so this weekend. Send me a PM when and where it is suitable to meet if you want.

dirt set of rims
excel 17" super motard set with big freakin disc and caliper locator
renthal bars
pro circuit t4 can with a couple different tips
chain for each set and 15-38 on motard set, 15-47 on dirt set
all dummy switches removed,
and all original bits and pieces that arent on the bike like exhaust, cables, in a box
guy i bought it off even has a small fire extinguisher with its on special stainless sleeve made for it, bolts up on left hand side of tail, very nice, but i dont think its going to burst into flames any time soon, and just have to twist throttle to get away from any fire one may have started! Just starting to get a bit revved up now about the DB1k. Have even been on my diddy lathe turning up some proper fastenings for my rack... which prompted me to think about a few things....my wr has the carrying capacity of the average pocket so do i need to carry a 5 litre petrol can, tank range is around 220kms. Next thought turned to the over night stay at the rowing club house. Do the beds there have any mattresses/sheets etc or are we to bring all that stuff with us. The petrol can is the lesser of the two issues but if i can get away with not taking either!!

HAS THE PAPER ROUTE CHANGED MUCH FROM LAST YEAR? I still have the old one in my box and it would save my printer cartridge if I didnt have to change it.
The route is exactly the same as last year. Just a couple of minor corrections to distances but they shouldn't be an issue. If you are really worried about down load and electronic copy and compare it with your paper chart.
Not sure what you mean about the advroute site taking over your mapsource. ADVroutes should have no interaction directly with mapsource. Are you downloading the GPX file to your hard drive then trying to upload it to your GPSr using Mapsource or are you uploading to your GPSr directly from ADVroutes using Garmin Communicator?

And it is??? Barum/Mitas something?
Mitas C-02. And it's not made in a big 18" size. :(
120/90 isn't that big,but I'm sure the tread more than makes up for it.Seriously, that pic doesn't do it justice. But reading round the net, some people love them, some hate them.but most that hate them are on out and out MX bikes and probably comparing them to their expensive Pirelli race tyres.

Just rang DOC to find out about the Molesworth and to confirm it is opening. Also asked St Anaurd DOC what the weather is like cause we were hoping to ride the Rainbow on Monday (22nd Dec). Turns out that the Rainbow will be opening on the same date as the Molesworth from now on i.e. the 28th December. I rang the Rainbow Station to confirm this, which they did. We cant get the key in time so over the lewis for us. If any others want to use the Rainbow to travel to NN before the 28th either try and organise a key now or you'll have to find a different route.

If you ring and ask nicely often that will get you an arranged key pickup from the homestead up the North end (not to be confused with the old homestead that is further south where you pay the toll in open season).
If you just turn up unannounced you're almost certainly guaranteed to be told to piss off.
Nothing wrong with the Lewis, it's also generally a nice ride.

Zerax and I just had a squizz up Onamalutu tonight. Sadly the ride was too short for me to leech off his 28L megatanker, but the HID spottie he hooked me up with works a treat.
Anyways, there is still logging going on in the forest, although the road itself is physically open. I'd say that we shouldn't have any dramas getting through earlyish in the morning as we are planning. We aren't riding through any working areas but there may still be trucks on the roads.
There were two bridges, these have been blocked off and removed and now have mandatory stream crossings instead. Piece of piss unless it's been raining up in the hills. Hopefully it doesn't, it would take a fair bit to make it un ridable.

A bit of wet before the event would be nice but a check of metview (http://www.metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain®ion=nzsi&noofdays=7) just now shows a goodun rain storm overnight of the 2nd/3rd with a good bit of it lingering around on the 3rd. Hi Guys,
I was expecting to join you this Saturday, but due to work commitments that's not possible, so I went yesterday.
Stunning weather all the way, so I hope you get the same on the 3rd/4th.
My bike only requires one stop, so without riding at a risky pace I can maintain a decent average speed, starting and finishing in daylight. Very little traffic anywhere, although in Molesworth I passed a 4WD stranded with two punctures. Don't forget your spare tubes!
Both the Mangatapu and Porika Tracks are in rough condition, with quite decent ruts on the climb up from Maitai Valley. Big bikes without real knobblies might find it exciting, I think.
I second the thoughts on Onamalutu, I doubt there'll be logging on Saturday morning, particularly that early. If you focus on the road, you don't notice the Road Closed sign!
The first ford on Taylor Pass Road had water flowing in it, and the concrete base is smooth and slimey - very slippery.
Very windy at the top of Black Birch in a nor'wester.
The other 4WD tracks (Braeburn, Maruia) are in excellent order, as are all the shingle roads. The climb up to Flora Saddle is very corrugated.
I thought the route notes were pretty good, so thanks for producing and posting them for all. Instruction 105 should read Tapawera Glenhope Road, not Tadmore.
Good luck to all this weekend, I look forward to reading the tales which I'm sure will emerge.
Raise some dust!

Well..... after my little ride yesterday I decided to do something with the seat, to make things a little more comfortable.
Step 1- a wee piece of closed cell foam
Step 2- a wee piece of sheepskin, left over from when the kids were babies
Step 3- attach to seat, bungies are your friend
Step 4- it even fits on the bike

Hope the scheduled 3 Jan event's going well - Grant & I had to go for an early ride due to work commitments and did the 1 dayer starting on the 2nd (04:55) ... of course it took to the 3rd (01:30) the finish! Thanks to CooneyR for such a good road book, we didn't actually do a U turn once. Pretty interesting weather on the Friday, Southerly gales at top of the Black Birch Track - does anyone know how high that hill is? we were up in the clouds. A northwester on the Rainbow that had us riding the bikes by hanging off, and of course the rain from about six'ish. The highlights - the Mangatapu saddle in the dark and then the return trip over the Porika as it was getting dark. Fortunately Grant had ridden most of the tracks before but they were all new to me... I definitely be taking the bike back up to do some of them again. Be interested to hear how the scheduled 1 and 2 dayers went.
A few snaps from the day!

got pushed off road twice up near top of altimarloch, so fucking windy, wasnt anything but had to chillax my energy and brace the wind before i moved it back on road, saw you up there too!
and my bike fell over and mushed my handguard while it was on its side stand attending a gate, biggest piss off of all !

Crazy, sorry about yer bike mate, gutting I'll bet.
BLenheim lads are back over the hill now, sleep in in the morning and my wife working this afternoon have meant a hasty retreat back home.
Big thanks to Ryan for the planning, Colin for the BBQ hospitality, and Jim, Kyle and Jeff for the riding! Jim especially for navving us around the last 150km when we were all a bit over it!
I relied purely on GPS to get me around (dangerous I know) but it worked pretty well, esp the turn waypoints. A couple of 50m turnarounds though...the price for not running a scroller.
Very happy with how the DR-Z went - 1000km straight stopping only to put gas in the engine. Of course an oil change at the start and another now will keep the "Reliable" in d-R-z.
Great to meet everyone and thanks again! Buggs

Good to see no one else has had a major off.Was quite scary watching 426crasher come to grief.Just lucky my bike decided to play up again,or else he would have been by himself....Had mine on the trailer, turned off northern highway to head towards Hanmer/west coast, get over the bridge just past the pub and the side stand breaks in half leaving the bike on a 45 degree angle dangling on the right had side ropes. As I was fuming and contemplating riding it,Tony came past and helped me and wifey out.We both rode up to Hanmer where I noticed a fairly serious oil leak from the Tenere and a lot of oil on the back tyre.
It got so bad through Rainbow,I had to stop and look at patching it up.Turned out I now have a major crack in the right hand clutch casing running from the back of the case, over the kickstart shaft and just starting into the clutch housing.Fucking great! After Tony had his off (And I hope you made it home ok!) we had to cruise out with me feeling quite bad as I couldn't open gates with only half a sidestand.
We parted ways at St Arnaud at around 3pmish,him heading toward Murchison and me towards Nelson, very carfully as oil was again getting on my back tyre. Dumped the XT at my dads friends' place in Atawhai and will pick it up when we leave,or maybe I should burn it.
Anyways, hope you all had a good ride and I'm quite annoyed I missed it.Maybe next year or maybe Waitangi weekend....

Well this run turned out to be quite eventyful. Firstly it was successful for a number of riders but not all. The majority of the 1 day riders finished safe and sound (and tired). News that I'm aware of (correct me if I'm wrong) and some of it is a repeat of earlier posts-
426crasher managed to find "the" corner and has hurt himself on the way up to NN on the 2'nd resulting a retreat to Chch. He made it back ok and was off to A&E on the 3rd. I've not heard results - any news 426?
Peril had bike issues on the way up and was unable to join us.
Javahead lost a bag of goodies on the Mangatapu which apparently is in the "Smurf" following the 2 day riders. Nordie can you please contact Javahead about returning it.
MattDakar managed to have an off on the Mangatapu and has most likely broken his right thumb but completed the ride anyway. Any updates from your A&E visit this morning Matt?
the XR650R rider (not a KB'er) had an off on the way to SH1 near Blenhiem and manged to scratch up the bike, wear a hole in his jacket and had a graze on his arm. Finished the event.
There were a few who got caught by the hole on the Mangatapu resulting in offs or pushing.
HOT managed to drown her bike in the deep crossing at Onamalutu. Obviously people got it running again cause I saw it in the Rainbow.
It was damn windy on top of Altimarlock (almost 1694m from memory) resulting in some being blown of bikes, crawing around, hand signals, and other tom foolery.
MotoRad-ical got a puncture on the way up Altimarlock from a 2 inch nail. Funnily enough he had TKC80 tyres on which to the best of my knowledge is the only tyre that has got a puncture on the DB1k to date. Solution - TKC80's are not allowed to be used on the DB1k from now on :bleh:
Transalper's DR650 has a serious gearbox (we think) issue. This happened in the Rainbow about 60km from Hanmer at the Sedgemere Huts. After El Scooto and I pulled up it was noticed that his XTZ was leaking raidiator fluid. End result, the two of them go to hang out at the Huts with a bunch of cycling and 4wd "girls" for 6 hours while MotoRad-icle and I went back to NN for a 4wd and trailer. All of us pulled out and DNF'd. (1 out of three finishes for me is not bad - right?)
Crazyfrog has a engine issues and pulled out at Tapawera with Javahead giving him a lift back to NN. Both DNF'd.
I've heard that there had been a number of minor offs but no details yet. Feel free to add the incriminating evidence.
Tuckerbag also managed to find "the" corner, laid the bike down and managed to break some ribs. He has flights home on Monday and his bike is apparently parked up at a farm near Lake Rotoroa to be collected later.
topo attempted to to the DB1k in 2 days instead of 1 due to his broken thumb (few weeks ago) but at the end of the 1st day had had enough and came back to NN.
I can't spell Mobil. To be corrected along with a couple of road names for next years run:D
Despite the mayhem and DNF's it would appear from talking to those at Lambretta's this morning (about 24 inclduing partners turned up) that most really enjoyed the challange. I'm enthused to organise a run again next year (yes you will all come back for more punshiment LOL). Thankyou all who helped and participated. It was great to meet many new faces and hear the stories. I have a few photos but I cant post them till back to Chch.
Lastly, I'm going to track down the Rainbow Station Manager (I have his contact details following my crash) to talk to him about putting up a sign at "the" corner. I have some contacts in the roading industry as does El Scooto so hopefully we can get a proper sign otherwise we will make one with some paint and plywood. Assuming we get permission we will return to install it sometime in late Jan/Feb. I personally know of 3 (including myself) that have come off there and sustained serious injuries in the past couple of years and I've heard stories of others. Time to do something about it.
Cheers R

Looks like you all had a great ride and i'm still a bit pissed at missing it. Well my DB1k didn't last very long. As peril has just posted it turned out to be an eventfull day. After i left Blair at St Arnaud i took a steady ride to Murchison to gauge how i could ride. With things getting a little sore and numb i decided to press on down to Springs where it started to chuck down with rain. From Springs to Chch was total agony as my back pack was pulling all the time on the shoulder and the wr seat was finally taking it's toll on the arse. Finally got home at 8.30 where wifey had to peel me off the bike. Text Ryan to tell him i was home and he rang within a few minutes, nice one dude and a big thanks to Blair for being concerned and sticking with me to St Arnaud. The final outshot being that i went for an x ray and ultrasound and have a broken shoulder blade, torn tendons and a ruptured muscle. Great!! Out for a month they recon. The only damage to the bike is bent brake lever when it blew over in the wind when we stopped to look at Blairs oil leak. Hmmm Waitangi weekend......
Cheers Tony.

There will soon be enough of us to have a big ceremony there soon. I had a bit of go at the guy at homestead about the corner and he told me it catches plenty of people including somebody towing a boat!!! Looking forward to more reports.

Meanwhile, can anyone enlighten me as to the exact location of the famous corner? As you prolly know, this coming weekend is the Yamaha Safari, based in Hanmer Springs, and the third day (Monday) heads off up the Rainbow. If we would pre-warn the 140 riders of possible impending doom it might lessen the carnage.

426, Grant & I must have been following you at the Rainbow on the 2nd and saw the skid marks etc and were talking to the manager when we paid the toll. Best of luck in getting a sign sorted as the guy, whilst friendly, didn't seem to think it was much of an issue... of course he hadn't just binned the bike.
Re the TKC80's in CooneyR's post, well I can vouch for the front at least, as mine survived the trip with no punctures or serious moments!

Javahead's bag is at my place.
TuckerBag got a rivet in his rear E-09 on the Maungatapu.
Sounds like Transalper has the exact same "in 2nd gear but able to freewheel" problem mine does.
Tuckerbag is just really sore. Probably swelling pinching a nerve but last night he was in a pretty serious amount of pain but is in a pretty good but sore condition today. He sleeping in my spare room and is riding home.

Had a cruisy after brunch ride over the Maungatapu with javahead (he was the only one to accept my invitation, everyone else seemed strangely disinterested ) and then out to home. I was feeling pretty rooted by the time I got here.
I enjoyed every minute of the ride , made all the more enjoyable by the company of my riding companions.
I got the crashing thing out of the way as early as possible by riding straight into 'that hole' on the Maungatapu I had been warning people about , anyone else who found it, well you should have bloody listened !
The Africa Twin took it all in its stride apart from the electrical fault on the start line that left me with high beam only and at about 50% brightness, so I tail end charlied the convoy of 5 led by the dependable balrog from Tapawera, hitting town about 12.30
Just checked my speedo readings 1001 km !

Dave,
I'm going back through the Rainbow with wifey tomorrow. I'll stop and record a good waypoint on the corner and forward you the coordinates. Maybe I should get a can of dazle and spay the bushes on the side of the road as a tempory marker for next weekend? Also I'll try and send you a description and photos via PM tomorrow night.
Cheers Bish
When I chatted with the gate keeper he seemed pretty blase about the corner and though that we should all be slowing down. Helpful attitude! the thing is, he is not the land owner or the station manager (which is who I'm going to contact). The gate keeper started talking about this fella who crashed a couple of years back, broke his neck and got a chopper ride - umm yer dude that was me!!!
The TKC comment was made in jest but the reality still holds - they are the only tyre that has had punctures (both tubless and tubed versions) on the DB1k. Edit - I see that an Mitas E09 also had a puncture so I stand corrcted.

Yep. Shouldnt be too hard to put some photos ad info up. Also I think I'll manually add a couple of points in the route files with some warnings.

Excellent days riding, big thanks to cooneyr and warewolf for organising the ride and providing us a place to gather :)
My crash count was 4 ( does that mean I'm winning? )
Pot hole on the Manguatapu got me, saw it at the last minute, gave it a big hand full of gas and hit it square on. The bike stopped dead. I didn't
Ran wide on a simple corner on the Molesworth & clipped the grass verge
Lost the front coming back down the Porika, put a nice ding in my tank
5mins later lost it in the ford at the bottom
Pretty sore the next day ( unfit sore rather than bashed up sore ) I guess my training routine of beer and couch surfing didn't help much
Never mind, Neurophen plus to the rescue :doctor:
zeRax, Underground & buggsubique great riding with you guys :2thumbsup

I'm shocked you made it that far in so much pain.I did try convincing you to park up in Nelson, might have worked out a bit better, but I know home is where I'd want to go after a big hit like that.
I'm glad you're alright (as alright as you can be) as I was a bit worried after leaving you as to wether you'd make it that far, pass out out from the pain or have another off.
So bring on next year. :niceone:

In my opinion there are 2 other sneaky off camber corners earlier in the trip going north but the one that seems to be claiming riders i this one (I was there for cooneyr's crash and believe this to be right but do check back for cooneyrs waypoint when he's logged it)

hope safe and satisfied in Wellywood.
You folks fortunate to live in the top of the South certainly have some great Adventure riding country.
With the exception of Molesworth, Rainbow and Maruia - the rest of the tracks were new to me.
Was pleased to have to have ridden from Pelorus to Nelson via the Maungatapu on Friday as a warm up.
Great bunch of people - those I was privileged to ride with on the 2 day including Shane and Alison (Mrs Jatz) in the Surf sag wagon and those I got to chat with at the BBQ Friday night - thanks.
Those of you who did the one day event - I salute you - especially Balrog and JavaHead on the 1150GS's (mine stayed home)
Thanks to Mr and Mrs Werewolf for hosting the BBQ at your place and CooneyR for developing the route / event.
For those of you who partook of Mrs Jatz's Pasta dish on the Sat night at Lake Rotoroa isn't that lady a great chef?
Thanks Shane and Alison (MrsJatz) for riding Shotgun with us.
Will try to post some pics later in the week as time permits.

Is there a good description, Lat/Long, or Grid Ref?
Thanks,

Hi Dave, the advice we got at the riders briefing was pretty helpful for those on your ride that don't have GPS, "when you see the blue shed ahead of you up the valley watch the next left hander". It's very close to the toll gate and the nasty thing about it, apart from being a little deceiving (it tightens) and off camber is that there is a little bank that is at right angles to the road that would stop your front wheel should you run wide. Hope this helps.

Just got home from the 1 day ride and wanted to thank Ryan, Collin and the other competitors that made this a "Grand Day Out"!
I rode with my friend Wayne (G650XChalenge), we rode a Chatto Crk 1000 miler a few years ago and have similar skill levels.
While my bike will hold 43 litres and has a range of 650km's, Wayne's bike, even with an additional 7 litre saddle tank and a 5 litre container on a little tray out back should have been good for a little over 400km's, so we planned on refueling at Hanmer Springs on the way down and Murchison on the way back to Nelson.
Things were a little rushed prior to the start, my wife and I had a wedding in Taupo on new years eve and Wayne was camping on his boat in Havlock, I flew down to CHCH on new years day to pick bikes and trailered them through to Havlock for the night. We got into Nelson in time for a shake down run over the Maungatapu track and a quick shower before the lovely BBQ and riders briefing.
Woke before the alarm went off and headed away at 4.25am, reasoning it would be just as dark at 5.00am. First cock up was my gps started up in simulator mode which due to me being gps green I didn't realise until daylight, never mind was only using it for average speed.
Second cock up was poor old Wayne hit the "big hole" 15mins out, and was off the bike complaining about a compressed spine, what ever that is. He was obviously in a lot of pain, all doubled over and having a fair old winge, still no time for sympathy, so on we went. The force of the seat compressing his spine was going to cause problems later as it ripped out 1 of the saddle-tank mts on the rr sub frame.
No prob's for the first 3 hours, 205 km's and looking good, then it started to go a little pear shaped, couldn,t find the Black Birch track, headed up another track about 5 km's up the road, realised it wasn't the right 1, doubled back, found the right gate and rode to the top where things got even more pear shaped! At 1 point within metres of the top, there was a very exposed ridge line, I got blown into the water table, hade both feet flat on the ground but still got blown over, Wayne stopped, same thing happened to him, he crawled on all 4's up to where I was, we still couldn't lift the bike against the wind. We swung it round on the left rocker cover so it was facing into the wind got it upright but had to start it to move it into the wind. Couldn't talk, all done with hand signals. We buggered about getting off the exposed bit, dropping the bikes again in the process, thought I was going to have to leave mine there due to the resulting damage (cracked lh mirror). Rode down passing, Pete, Matt and Ian whom we were going to see a lot of during the day. Stopped and warned James.
Wayne' saddle tank needed emergency repairs by the time we got off the Black Birch track, we just ratchet tied it on and hoped for the best.
Matt, Ian and Pete caught up with us in the Molsworth, was following Ian for a while thinking, "great lines, now we are going quicker", when I came over a rise into a left hander which tightened, all crossed up trying to kill enough speed to stay on top of the bank, I was in the exact same predicament on the Omarama ride but carrying more speed which meant straightening up and riding off the edge was the only option then. Luckily this time I managed to stay on top of the bank, left some scary marks though, (on the side of the road as well as in my shorts)!
Because of the stuff up we made navigating earlier, Wayne's bike run out of fuel running down the hill into Hanmer, we transferred some from my bike, refueled and headed up the Rainbow, no real dramma's, there is a deceiving approach into a ford that caused some excitement for Wayne, that might have been where he lost his 5 litre container.
Wayne was following a 4wd into a big ford not far b4 the tarmac when he may have hit a rock dug up by the 4wd, he dropped his bike to the left and I dropped mine to the right. On we went with boots full of water, through St Arnauts where Ian Matt and Pete had stopped for fuel and a pie.
No real drama's apart from getting lost again on the way to Spring's jct, Ian had to calm an irate cow farmer who objected to us riding through his farm!
Down to Spring's jct and more drama, I was helping Wayne refuel (hurry up, hurry up!) I never secured his main fuel cap properly which meant he was loosing fuel, the reserve light come on coming out of Palmer's road, I was ahead and unaware of his prob's. He stopped at the garage again and managed to find a rocker cover cap off a Mitsy, which helped a little, still only had a 60km fuel range, bugger. We made it back to Murchison, Ian, Matt and Pete where there, they had a little fuel prob as well.
We tanked up Wayne's bike bought another 5 litre container, strapped it onto my bike and headed for Nelson. Further delays when Wayne stopped for removing 1 of his driving lights which had come loose. We stopped at Tapawera when he ran out of fuel again, put the 5 litre in, discussed which way we turned off the bridge, I said left, Wayne took this to mean left onto the bridge? I was pressing on to make it back in 17 hr's, rode about 5 km's up the road realised Wayne wasn't following, waited then road back thinking he might have other probs, could not find him, thought he may have gone right off bridge, realised he cocked up and had doubled back when I was looking for him by the forestry camp. I rode on to complete the course without seeing him again, tried calling him when I got back onto main road. Then rode to finish 17hrs 5 mins after leaving the start.
What a great ride and amazing roads and tracks, we had a ball, thanks again to Ryan for putting it together, Collin for his hospitality and the other riders for their company.

This is good advice.
I spoke to the station manager today about options for making the corner more obvious. He is going to check out the corner again later this week and I'll have another chat with him later on. At this stage he is not keen on a sign as it creates issues with why wasn't some other corner sign posted as well. I've suggested some "manipulation" of vegetation to make the corner more obvious i.e. cutting down some bushes on the inside and planing more on the outside. Currently the bushes on the inside (about 10m to the left of the corner) obscure the road past the corner and the bushes on the outside give the impression that the corner is more open that it really is.

If we're counting crashes then I can't avoid admitting to briefly losing sight of the GS. Thanks to all involved in hauling it back up the bank onto the Porika Track. Next year I should be riding something at least 120kg lighter, and I hope I won't have lost my kit of ropes etc within the 1st 30 mins.
I can vouch for TKC80s. Thankfully both mine survived with no punctures. Both were new, tubeless and fully inflated.
Congrats to CooneyR and the others involved in organising everything to run so smoothly despite all the unexpected events. It was a great weekend.

Surely this is just a speed issue, not a 'roading' one?
As a 'scenic' public acess thru private land, not a closed racetrack, would it not be prudent to ride on the conservative side of 9/10th?
Would be a shame to see it 'splattered' with garish paint/signs for the benefit of a small few now wouldn't it?
Comon guys, if you want 10/10ths, pay yer money and do 'race to the sky'.

I hear you and I agree that we really dont want signs all around the place hence the lack of action till now. The problem is that the corner has a significantly slower negotiating speed that those around it (1st bad point), the bush line goes straightish ahead giving the impression the corner is no where near as tight as it is (2nd bad point), you cannot see the road downstream from the corner due to bushes (3rd bad point) it is significantly off camber (4th bad point), and lastly there is a ditch about 1m deep immediatly on the side of the outside where everybody ends up (5th bad point).
Yes if people went slower it would not be such an issue however there are no indicators (unless you know the corner) to promt you to slow down. End result is that there has been many bikes, I'm talking 10's of bikes (first hand knowledge and anicdotal info), end up in the ditch along with a number of cars. I would like to see something done but I dont really want to see a sign. I think the bush manipulation is the way to go. The other option is to relocate the ditch or provide some camber but these are both significant earthworks issues and would need resource consent - not going to happen.

Good to hear everyone is still walking at least, even if some are walking wounded!
I know 'that corner' on the Rainbow too, the first time we did the track northbound was on a 4x4 safari, it took us by surprise a bit but we made it around, then looked back to see the jeep in our team flying straight off it into the swamp! It really is a deceptive bastard of a corner & a simple LH corner sign would prevent quite a few incidents & could even save a life one day.
The consequences for the farm manager from doing nothing about a well known hazard could be quite severe from an OSH perspective.
Cheers

I'd agree with ducatijim but unfortunately we have no control over other people and an awful lot of them will go as fast as they can through there no matter how hard you try to educate them on the risks (although I think it is open limit there so they are unlikely to be actually breaking the speed limit).
Relying on road signs is a bad habit IMO and judging a corner by it's surroundings instead of the visible road surface isn't much better (yes sometimes i'm guilty of this too) but because we can't change most people then I agree that we need to change the corner or it will continue to claim riders and drivers alike.
Having read the last few posts on signs vs other things I think cutting down a few bushes and maybe planting some others would be the best option.
I can see where if you put a sign up on one corner then some people might wonder where the rest were on other corners that catch them out too.
Anyway enuff said, here's the only 2 pictures I took, as a one dayer pictures are bottom of the priority list although I guess I could have taken a few around the cabin during the 5.5 hour wait for rescue :o

That corner just needs someone to staple a few red arrows, cross country style, to a handy tree/bush.That'd make a great distraction on top of an already tricky corner! Whenever I see stuff like that out of place, I start to wonder why they are there and if they are relevant to me... which burns valuable concentration on the task at hand. eg if I can't see that the road curves, and it looks like it goes straight ahead, then I might think those arrows indicate a branching trail, which I'd be looking for rather than at the road ahead that I think is going straight.
Not paying enough attention is my #1 pucker-inducing reason; the aforementioned distraction is one I've identified I personally have to watch for.
Don't know that it is a nana job, I don't recall that corner particularly, but I also have a well-developed sense of self-preservation about road surface I can't see... I hope. I wonder if a standing position lets you see sufficiently more of this corner to judge it better?

No offence Pampa, but your assumption about 50kph is related to signs that are actually in the Molesworth, just goes to show that there is an expectation created by the signs that doc has put up. From memory (was through yesterday) there are very few, if any, signs other than the brown painted horizontal ECNZ creek/river signs in the rainbow. Inconsistence is a major source of safety problems on roads of any type. This corner is a clasic example in that it is inconsistent with the speed environment for some distance either side of it. The big "reduce speed now" signs on some corners on sealed roads are there specifically because a corner is inconsistent with the speed environment upstream of it.

Good point about the markers and disctration. Look at it this way though, for specific events a marker along with a warning does a good job of indicating an issue, a la trail rides. I have to admit guilt to providing markers for Racing Dave's event next weekend which he will hopefully provide a briefing around. When I post some pics tonight you will see what I mean.
I took a series of pics yesterday that I hope will show some of the issues with the corner. I'll anotated them and post them tonight for comment on a new thread.
Riding like a "nana" is a valid solution however we all know that we cannot enforce "nana" riding for all and sundry and we all know that people are hurting themselves at this corner. Lets just try and provide some simple solutions that provide the necessary visual cues without creating more problems i.e. expectation.

Hey, I've got a radical new idea....why don't we allow.....no......expect people to take responsibility for their OWN actions?
Along the lines of....oh I don't know.......maybe, ride to the conditions?
We don't need a sign for everything we may encounter as we travel thru life.

I think T.A. has got it, perhaps put in some kind of natural barrier/warning that there is a change of direction, i.e. some flaxes or the like, something that'll grow in the swamp.
Or maybe use some of the funds that the station gets from toll's to build up the camber.I'm not sure exactly how many bikes went through on the D.B. but I'm sure the the run holders would be making enough to cover it
The blue barn is visible for about 4 to 5 corners before the offending one is reached

No offence but I'm not sure if you're serious or pisstaking. The first time I rode thru the rainbow (new years day) I rode in a manner some- ok a lot would call like a nana. I very nearly ended over in the ditch - Jatz was following me & did the same.
Have you ridden the rainbow? Know the corner? From the Northern end looking back it is the innocous corner like most of them along the way. When you travel thru it it is a sneaky little bastard.
Sorry but it is no use telling me to look for the blue shed cos I'm looking at the road, & I wouldn't hae a clue where the station dude lives.
I'm not into wrapping people up in cotton wool nor visual pollution however a little slowdown sign before a corner that has claimed a lot of riders doesn't seem to me to be the start of the rise of the third reich.

Hi, I have only went once over that track just before the dusty but and if I remember correctly there were 50K speed limit signs everywhere :chase:.
cheers,
Pampa
The beginning of the route we think of as the Rainbow, at the Hanmer end it actually passes through a bit of St James Station and a bit of the Molesworth Station (which is indeed another 50km/hr zone) but after that when you pass through the boundary gate actually in to the Rainbow Station I believe you get open limit again.
On the route we think of as the Molesworth it is indeed 50km/hr zone at least between the two cob cottages where the DOC guys hang out and you can camp.

Well to add another 2c worth into the mix, there are several corners in the Molesworth which are treacherous too. You could generally see these ones on the day as they had sudden rear wheel slide marks precariously close to the outer edge of the corner.
IMHO manage your speed and focus on the ride. Very easy to get carried away on our machines and on a long ride very easy to drift off and think about all that sundry sh*t.
This is the whole reason I nearly:Oops:bowed out a couple of months ago. My solution to my fear of overcooking it was to adjust my riding and not take any of it lightly. Hopefully I can keep the mix right and avoid getting fed through a straw at any point in the future.
I think I recall the corner in question but it wasn't till I saw the blue shed a few seconds later that I thought "shit, that must have been it..."
Here's one in the molesworth that a mate experienced - yes the bike did go over the bank...just too fast and not in the right head space.

So I'll be fine on Waitangi weekend eh?:lol::lol:

Hey, I've got a radical new idea....why don't we allow.....no......expect people to take responsibility for their OWN actions?
Along the lines of....oh I don't know.......maybe, ride to the conditions?
We don't need a sign for everything we may encounter as we travel thru life.
I've never crashed either
Next time I see a bridge washed out I won't warn anyone I'll sit back and laugh as each vehicle falls into the water can you bring the pop corn ducatijim?
Thanks cooneyr for trying to make a difference I personally appreciate the effort your going to :niceone:
We are quite off topic now arn't we.

Thanks to all for their input into the discussion on Ryan's Bend. I am certain of where it is, and it is easy to describe, which I will do at the Yamaha Safari briefing on Friday night. Even if Ryan's dazzle is gone, a warning might save one crash.
Of course riders are responsible for their own actions and must ride to the conditions, but likewise, if a known hazard catches out otherwise sensible riders it's only the right thing to apply a warning. Advice is one thing, everyone is free to act on it or ignore it.
Personally, I frequently ride alone in remote areas, and treat all roads/tracks as if scary stuff is around each bend. It's easy to misjudge a corner, and it's the consequences of that misjudgement at Ryan's Bend that outweigh the small error of judgement.
With 140 bikes next Monday, it'll be interesting to see what we sweep riders see when we pass through.

What a great ride and amazing roads and tracks, we had a ball, thanks again to Ryan for putting it together, Collin for his hospitality and the other riders for their company.

as I've been through both ways on bike & 4X4, I know the corner it's been more good luck than management that I've not crashed, Ryn it's a good idea to see if a warning could be put in place even if we have to do it ourselves.

You fellas are welcome to an opinion but I disagree. In fact we all as tax payers end up footing the bill if somebody has an accident and the unfortunate Rainbow station workers have the clean up the mess. This thread is way off topic, not helped by me I know, so come over to the THE corner in the Rainbow thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1878826#post1878826) to have a look at pics and discuss this topic further.
This here thread can hopefully now go back to DB1k discussions - please.

Back on topic, ok then, about Waitangi day, I no longer expecting to be doing a two day rerun as I doubt I will have the DR back on the road by then.
Nordie, couple of those last pics look like people falling over in strange flat open places almost like carparking areas?

Not much sleep Friday night-kept telling myself I was mad.....4am alarm, this was it!
Maungatapu was a wee challenge!couple of offs, managed to perch the DR on a huge rock one time(Nordie to the rescue!)
Onwards....and who drops their bike in the river on the Onamalutu?:doh:Padmei & Shane to the rescue(felt much happier going thru water on the old R100GS)
Onwards we went ....thru the Molesworth,Jollies pass I hadnt done B4,the Rainbows millions of potholes had gone from my last trip thru there - yeah!
On we go to the mighty Porika, managed to make it to the top & then came across Javahead and the boys hauling the 1150GS onto the track, other 1 dayers picking their way up as we descended.
Cannot believe I made it down, was slippery,& rough.Topo was amazing and stayed with me offering encouragement and advise:hug:wouldnt have done it without you buddy

Thanks to all doing the organising & the two dayers for the fantastic company. It was the first time I'd ridden the roads by motorbike & have to say the riding was excellent. I'm still retracing the route every night as I drop off to sleep.
I learnt a lot of things - how to undrown a bike & how to drive a 4wd on 2 wheels over a railway platform (this may need a photo to explain Nordie).
To me the 2day felt like an organised tour with guides (Nordie, Jatz & Topo) & support crew (Shane, Mrs Jatz & Mrs Topo). So for any noobs unsure if they could handle it theres plenty of room to tag along next year.
How's everybodies broken bones & bikes now that the dust has settled? Lets have an update.
Oh yeah Helenoftroy you'll be pleased to know my boos have finally dried out & I found a nice trout in one of them we had for dinner last night:lol:

Thanks to the people who have written their ride reports adding entertainment and helping the memorys of this years ride live on.
Reckon I'll try get myself in some of Nordies 2 day photos next time.
Thanks to El Scooto for breaking down with me.
Thanks to cooneyr and MotoRad-icle for calling it quits and launching the recovery operation instead of finishing the ride.

Thanks Nordie, I don't consider I "ditched my friend". We were not far from home, there was a fair chance he was in front looking for me. I needed to get to cell phone coverage or a computor to look at his SPOT tracking in case he had stopped.
If you have a better idea about what I should have done I am happy to learn.
Did you sort out mounting a sheepskin seat cover on the DR?
