Sure is! I think he paid around $350-400 and then another $150 odd for the US satalite tracking. Available from ORB stores.

Thanks Nordie, I don't consider I "ditched my friend". We were not far from home, there was a fair chance he was in front looking for me. I needed to get to cell phone coverage or a computor to look at his SPOT tracking in case he had stopped.
If you have a better idea about what I should have done I am happy to learn.
That was Plug's comment and should be taken in context with the winking smiley.
Did you sort out mounting a sheepskin seat cover on the DR?
Yep. Insulation taped my 650 one to the DRZ seat. Dunno if it made much difference as it still hurt.

Also look up Personal Locator Beacons (PLB), not to be confused with the marine oriantated EPIRB though they are very similar. Do a web search on the +'s and minuses for both SPOT and PLB. There are a few sites around that compare them. A good place to start looking at PLB's is here (http://www.beacons.org.nz/) (this is the offical multi agency goverment site). SPOT's international website is here (http://international.findmespot.com/).
Wifey and I just went out and purchased a GME MT410 PLB as it connects diretly to the emergency services and doesn't rely on an intermediate private company. Down side of the PLB's is that it does not sent "OK" messages, doesnt track your progress for others to see in real time and you cannot sent a non emergency "help" message (good for when you break down but dont need emergency services). Down side of SPOT is it is more reliant on good satalite reception, as it uses a different set of satalites which dont cover the whole world.
In ammerican dollars the costs are almost the same over about 5 years. This being the case the GME MT410 cost us about NZ$600 from Burnsco Nelson. Pricey but it will be carried for everything from tramping, alpine climbing motorcycling, "caging" to boating.

Back home now and pulled the clutch casing off to get repaired and decided to show you all how bad this crack was.
CRC Minute Mend held it together ok till I got to Nelson, but I wouldn't have wanted to start the ride with it like this.
Pretty sure it's due to the kickbacks the bike has started to do since changing the CDI and fiddling with the pulser coil.
Now I have a decent excuse to spend $350 to fix the electric start once and for all - To the disgust of my wife who thinks I should "get rid of that heap of shit" :oi-grr:

Hi guys,
Back in Chc safe n sound, as reported have had my thumb x-ray'd and right thumb is broken thru below first knuckle so now have a cast on up to my forearm for next 4 weeks, great! no riding, swimming golfing etc. Couldn't believe I had a crash only 15mins into the ride that could have finished my day but somehow managed to tough it out
Still managed to finish with Pete (Plug) and Ian in 16 hours..average speed 72kmph. Rapt to have nil damage to bike this time.
Thanks to Ryan and Colin for the organising and venue, good to catch up with everyone.
Cheers Matt

Prior to breaking down, I noted my moving average to be about 62 but with stoping for the flat tyre included the overall was about 52kmph making for about 19 hours expected to finish.
While sitting waiting for a vehicle recovery it was sad to watch the overall average fall below 41, I stoped looking soon after as any overall average below 41kph was a fail to finish within 24 hours figure.

Jeza did the 1 day on his 950 s this year and both my Bro and I have done all the hard bits of the route on our porky old tec XTZ750's. We find bits like the Mangatapu and Porika tiring cause the tanks of the XTZ are too wide to get forward into a proper position when standing going up steep hills but other than that none of the track is particularly difficult.

If you are comfortable on the 990 bring it along. The route has been riden on everything from a 250 to 1150 gs's.There's only 2 roughish parts,1 at the begining and 1 at the end of day1

She is all good for a 990 but just be careful decending into Rotoroa on the Porika, sliperier than a butchers tool and steep also but the 950 handled it like a dream.
Just be careful not to take a wiz by the old geeza's house by the start of the Breaburn track as he is as mad as a hatter and the sandflies will render your old fella useless if exposed to the elemrnts for too long.

Aslan, is this a ride to take the 990 on or is it more suited to the smaller bikes (I am thinking maybe of doing the two day next year)?
Yes certainly is provided the rider is confident. For me this year was all about a recce.
I was pleased to be on the DR650.
Had I dropped into the hole on the way up the Maungatapu on my 1150GS I would have had trouble getting going again given its high first gear. This is one reason folk buy the 1150GSA (Adventure) - it has a lower first gear. Same concern would have applied to getting going again had I stopped / fallen off going back up the Porika from Rotoroa
Same with descending the Porika into Rotoroa - I was pleased of the lighter weight of the DR. That said I have descended from the Old Man Range into Piano Flat in E.Southland on both my 1150GS and an anothers 1200GS and that descent felt much steeper and technical than the Porika to me. Certainly 'arse clenching' stuff for me on my 1150GS which I confess I 'paddled' for the steepest part.
Having said all of the above I've ridden your machine and a 950 and they certainly inspire my confidence - feel lighter and more responsive than my GS is my hands. Still like my GS though - good solid reliable machine.

Just an update on my KTM engine failure after 875km on the one dayer.......
I finally dropped the motor out of my KTM today, and discovered a collapsed camshaft bearing, not the dreaded crankshaft bearing collapse I had expected. :woohoo:
Only tiny particles of metal in the oil, (and a few round hard things - ballbearings!!) no scouring on the cylinder, valves all sweet, so by the looks of things, there's very little damage, making me a very relieved camper. While the engine is apart I'm gonna do the main crank bearings as well, fix the weepy oil sight glass, and maybe do the countershaft seal as well, so I don't have to worry about the internals for another 35,000 km.
The moral of the story is ...."If you hear thems funny clanking noises, shut it down and start walking!" My faith in my beloved KTM has been restored:hug:

Would it have just been the bearing dying on it's own or a possible oil pressure issue?

Just an update on my KTM engine failure after 875km on the one dayer.......
I finally dropped the motor out of my KTM today, and discovered a collapsed camshaft bearing, not the dreaded crankshaft bearing collapse I had expected. :woohoo:
Only tiny particles of metal in the oil, (and a few round hard things - ballbearings!!) no scouring on the cylinder, valves all sweet, so by the looks of things, there's very little damage, making me a very relieved camper.
onya Ward - as Nordie says I'm glad the troubles were not too serious and that after repairs the Katoom should be good another 35k - cheers S :scooter:

Dunno about a big bore kit $, wouldn't mind speccing up to a 690 Rallye!
Most of the rebuild parts are pretty expensive.
Prices is US Dollars only as a guide, prolly double them for NZ:
Piston $350, Rings??, Cylinder if unable to be recoated $450, Crankshaft complete with 2 bearings and conrod $650.
Oil pressure was fine, no loss of oil anywhere, just a few substandard (critical) bearings in pre 2003 LC4's were prone to early failure. KTM issued a workshop notice advising replacement of main roller bearing in particular.
God I love the internet, some very handy info out there......

Will have to check that camshaft bearing, there are a few reports of them going, although usually much higher mileage machines I thought. Definitely not the rocker roller bearing? Check Clint's 50k service thread for other stuff that may be worth doing at the same time.
You won't get to a 690 rallye, that's the next generation. But a 660 Rallye is possible and a quite common conversion on the 640s. Probably no more expensive if you are having to replace all those bits, except it also needs a different camshaft. Apparently a quite useful increase in power. idleidolidyll was getting 65 rwhp from his 660 conversion, IIRC. Dunno if it makes it peakier.
For the record, there was only one bearing that was prone to failure pre-2003. The ball bearing behind the clutch was upgraded to a roller bearing, cost about $100 to replace it yourself. Ex-factory since 2003.
Anyway, glad it is not as serious as you feared!

Well, I guess I am a bit overdue for a report back.
Unfortunately, my crash at Ryan's corner was probably the most defining part of my participation in the DB1k 2-dayer.
I still have fairly sore ribs and shoulders but can at least now sleep well and move around ok.
I seem to be improving day by day. Was booked in at Taupo race track ('96GSXR750) this Friday but have had to cancel.
The DB1k was just part of an 11 day (2770km) bike trip for me. But it was definitely the best part.
I absolutely must make a few thank you's:
A big thanks to Nordie and Ms Nordie for providing organisation, accommodation and some meals.
A big thanks to Shane for providing support wagon, fixing my puncture and having the correct tube for the job. Also for returning my bike back to Nelson. Top man.
A big thanks to all 3 of the girls in the 2 day group (HOT, Mrs Jatz & Ms Topo) for looking after me post crash, getting to the medical centre, and back to Nelson.
Cheers to Topo for inadvertently acting as my tour guide for a large chunk of the first day. Was quite a challenge just to keep up with you in some parts :-)
Thanks also to Padmei, Ham, Aslan, and Jatz. I know some of you guys helped to pull my bike out of the bog, (memory here is not so good) and get me on my way again. It was great to meet some new people and take in some spectacular scenery whilst traversing some terrific terrain on two wheels.
Oh, and cheers Padmei for sorting out the Sat night accommodation.
Thanks also to the organisers and all involved. This event really is a great introduction to adventure riding in NZ.
I just wish I could have ridden on day 2 as well. My $1600 XT400 has probably given me more fun per dollar than any bike I have owned so far.
..... if only I lived in the Mainland.

Suppose I had better put up my photos. I've put them here rather than on Advrider cause most of them are of the KB riders at the start and the 1 day riders brunch. Hopefully the pics meet the site rules, not that I can bloody find them when I want too.
First up photos of the riders briefing I took just after talking to you all.

thanks for posting - an interesting perspective for those of us who did the easy 2 option compared to the 'classic' 1 day (Longest Day) option.
Again - thanks for the time and effort you and your pals put into organising what in my view is one of NZ's iconic adventure rides.

Just thinking yesterday whether to bring up next years DB. Is it too early to pencil in a date (it is nearly 1/4 way thru the year & time's going v quickly) as I wanted to secure the rowing club accom again.

January 2010 is a long time away!!! I would suggest that it is around 3rd to the 10th of Jan though as they are about as close as we can get to the longest day. Alternatively could do between xmas and new year? I'll start another thread - see if we can get a bit better organised this year and maybe see if there are some twists to the challage that people might be interested in ;)

just wondering if I night have a look at a bit more of a route around Blenheim - maybe up through Picton, out towards Tory Channel & back Port Underwood. The views are good, gravel rds and gets rid of that nightmarish final leg over Mot way at the end of the current route.
Not sure how it works out for k's but happy to investigate.

Yes but I wonder how much of that stuff with 90 degree turns around farms they do. Although if it is every few miles that's still going to leave the average speed comparatively high. All in all I'd probably rate it about as hard as our DB1k - easier riding but more of it.
To turn our metric DB1k into an imperial 1k (1609km), you'd have to finish the existing 1k run in 15 hours, then do another 60% time & distance. If the extra route was the same style as presently, that's a pretty tough ask.
I can comfortably do the 1609km on the tar in about the same time as the DB1K, but the DB is much more physically demanding. Anyone who's completed the DB should not fret about doing a 1000 mile tar run, even on an adventure bike.
