You missed out the 'Either dates is good for me' option. Couldn't sign up definately yet but definately maybe at this stage. I'm keen to do the 42nd & Fishers again.

Either dates are fine with me too...
Earlier, better as weather is more reliable....
May, could be wet, making the 42 and fishers hell!
I am in....always looking for a good muddy ride with mates!

Sounds good. Weather dependant on Fisher's n 42 for fatty though.
Also, there is another scrambler rider in my neck of the woods, with a brand new matt black one.
Good bloke, should be able to drag him along.

990KTM can do it, has been done when it was a bit greasy as well as the traverse...
You got the horses to get out of the muck! Just need good tyres, Scorpions made it with a bit of wet stuff under foot...

Sounds like the earlier date is going to be the best option to try and get some good weather, although as stated above a little bit of rain before hand would make it more of an ADVENTURE ride.

Hmmm - I'm thunking its about time I got to the NI for a bit of a look around and to meet some of you folks. Got to sort luggage for the XTZ and a few other things so put me down as a maybe at this stage. No preferance re dates.
Wonder how long Chch to Otarawhatsit? About 16 hours Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Christchurch,+New+Zealand&daddr=Picton,+new+zealand+to:Wellington,+new+zeala nd+to:Otorohanga,+New+Zealand&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=-38.592187,175.178375&sspn=0.725598,1.100006&ie=UTF8&z=7) recons. Might need a couple of days off for this one. :msn-wink:
Ohh ohh ohh - just rememberd about the bit of road from Taumarunui to the Eight Mile junction near Ti Kuiti. Did that in a GT (turbo) Toyota Starlet (wifes car!!!) back in 2000. Curves are good :niceone:

After last weekends chaos on the south coast I think I will provisionally book this puppy in. Ryan, if you need a pit stop on your way north you are always welcome to stay at my place in PPram. Mark, get a 950 and then we can have an evenly matched race....hehe. Had a great time riding with you last weekend and it is always good to have a keen man to "test the waters" so to speak on the more gnarly bits before making an Ass of myself on the 950. Looking forward to this ride......Jez

Haha! When we left your house and went to get fuel, I put in 7.5L into the 7.7L tank so nah no jerry can needed, had loads left, gas station could've been another 5k away and I would've made it!!!!!! ;)
My arse was so sore from the KLX seat that once we hit Lower Hutt and I said goodbye to Stephen & Struan, I rode the last 15k home all thru town and round the Eastbourne bays standing up on the pegs!!!!!! Got some great looks from passing cars!!!

Cheers Jez. Not sure how to tackle this one yet. Starting to think Chch to Ohakune/Tamranui in one day (friday). Then up Sat for the ride to Otorohanga. Would try and get a 10ish sailing so ride north would be from early afternoon on. Way south could possibly be as far as welly sunday night then sail and travel to Chch on Monday morning.
Got provisional leave from the home front controller.

Mark - definitely interested in your ride - keen to use the 1150.Having done both Fishers and 42nd Traverse on a DR, I'd be a reluctant starter for those two tracks on the 'pig' (as leven fiddys are affectionately referred by the YAnks on ADV)........ so in the event I came along I'd be looking to do alternative routes as suggested earlier in this thread. you can get even a bus ( read BMW 1150 ) through almost anywhere and thats what makes it an Adventure ride:laugh::laugh:

if you foreign fellas could get up to Welly on Thurs night so that you had all day Friday to travel then the adventure could start around about Ashurst - might even have time to duck up Takapari Rd (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=317350&page=18)
from there to Ohakune you would hardly see any seal
Apparently you can get from Ruarimu to SH43 via some interesting roads. You could easily have a very full day getting to Otorohnga
If I go (I plan to) I will do this route on Friday regardless

This is very tempting. I've been part way up Takapari Rd in a 4x4 when we lived in Palmy for a year. I'm definatly keen to have a look at SH43 if possible.
Only problem is getting to Welly at a reasonable hour. Was thinking Blenhiem Thurs night, Friday 6.25am sailing (5am start!!), disembark in Welly at 9.25am then go from there. From memory it is another 45hour mins till we get out to Kapati/PPram i.e. 10ish. How does this time work for you?
Other option is 10.25pm sailing on Thurs night i.e. get to welly at 1.35am Friday. Dont think there will be too many beds available at that hour of the night! Hmmm maybe we should just leave Chch lunchtime Thurs and get the 6.05 ex Picton 9.15 into Welly. :sherlock:

With the dates confirmed now I am pretty keen for this, but will be unable to commit till a bit closer to the date.
Also wondering is anyone driving down from auck for this ride? As I would really appreciate some help getting some gear down there, won't be much gear just a bag with some clothes etc to avoid having to carry a largeish pack on the bike.
Would also like to group ride down if anyone else is riding down from Auck.
Will prob book a cabin for myself, but if someone wants to share a cabin that is sweet.

Chris you could put a Ventura Pack Rack on the KLX - that's what I did for the SCAR - it worked fine with a 25L regular back pack strapped on to it on the riders side of the tall Pack Rack frame - the backpack waist strap easily securing the bottom of the pack round the indent in the frame shape, (or if you have the dosh just buy the pack that goes with the rack), and then you could still strap another bit of gear onto the horizontal part of the rack to the rear of your pack. I had no issues with this rack on the SCAR - it worked a treat! In fact a slightly taller/bigger capacity backpack would still have been fine, maybe 30/35L. I think my 50L backpack may have been too tall for the rack tho so left that at home and travelled light! I didn't carry a sleeping bag as we hired linen at the motor park but that would've easily gone in another gear bag onto the horizontal part of the rack.
Hope to see you on the ride!

I will probably have a new bike before this ride, but I do like the idea of that sort of rack. And I agree traveling light will be the best option.
Might look at rack/bag options when I purchase.

it sorta cuts the wanganui river road in half, but thats cool, could do the other half another day.

Thomsons track runs through from Te Aroha over the Kaimai ranges to Tauranga but is not really doable on an adventure bike. It has huge holes in it filled with water & mud courtesy of the local 4wd guys and even on a MX bike it is a bit of a slog.:crazy:

after this rain you'll be needing a life jacket and someone with an argo to get you out. great lot of fun but i wouldn't atempt it on a larger ADV bike unless it was a long hot dry spell when the bog holes are only 1/2 a metre deep

If you or anyone wants the files I have already processed them so they will work with a GPS or can be loaded into google earth (they are in a not so commonly used format on the CD so have to be converted).
"All" I have left to do to get them on the web site is writing the names, descriptions, giving them a grading and creating the links which is the most time consuming bit. I have spoken to Andy Cockroft and he is more than happy for me to use the data on my website so I see no reason why I cannot simply forward the GPS data files.
Email me at the addy that appears in my signature or PM you email address if you want a copy.
Cheers R
P.S. Meant to say that most of the tracks are publicly accessible and if not contact details are provided.

Looks like I am committed now, so count me in as a definitely coming.
I am tripping down to Horotiu (near the Tron) for friday night, then shall pop down to Otorohanga on the Saturday AM.
Just wondering is there any chance of a google maps route? Of the planned saturday ride.

I spent last saturday checking out some of the roads planned to use in this ride. I covered about 500 kms return trip and found some excellent roads with good elevation changes.
I took down speedo readings at the start of all the roads so I just have to string them all together now to use the minimum of sealed roads and to get the distances right between fuel stops.
Will post up the route when i have done this later on.
It is looking like the Saturday will be a reasonably big day with around 420-430 kms from Otorohanga to Taumarunui. Less than 100 kms of these will be on tarseal.
Popped into the camping ground at Taumarunui and had a chat with the owners, they are a nice couple and it is well maintained and clean.
I also have found my new favourite gravel Rd, couple of pics below.

Excellent thank you very much.
Looks like it will be a good day. I am really looking forward to doing the 42, while doing it on a mountain bike we ran into some guys on motorbikes and I was thinking how excellent it would be to do on a motorbike.
From my memory there is only one part of the track I figured would be a bit tricky, it was a pretty steep up hill not long after the first small creek crossing. But after looking at the photos (as below), seems like it will be no problem.

Mark, that looks like a great route you have planned, they are all wonderful roads to ride. I see the ride starts at 10 and you do say that it is fast paced, but knowing those roads and how slow a group can be I wonder if you might need a plan B if time runs out in the afternoon.
Recently a small group of us (6) did 450 kms between 9am and 6pm and that was a fastish pace with minimal stops and probably only 60% gravel (and easier roads than the ones you propose). I'm a little concerned you may find it's a long day with a bigger one the following on the 42 and Fishers.....
So, my 2c worth is to have an option for a short cut if it is needed, or an earlier start to take the pressure off.
Auckland to Otorohonga on friday....I will probably sort out some route for a midday departure from here if anyone wants a quick fang down the west coast.

Recently a small group of us (6) did 450 kms between 9am and 6pm and that was a fastish pace with minimal stops and probably only 60% gravel (and easier roads than the ones you propose). ....
There is that magic number again - 50kph total trip average. This is what we often manage down here in the SI with reasonably fast-ish tracks and not a lot of stops with smallish groups, generally less than 10. The only time I've managed to complete the DB1k (2008) we also did it with an average of 50kph (20 hours) - again with minimal stops. The "fast guys" (yes they are fast by adv riding standards) average was about 58/60kph total trip average and that was with 5 stops and fair going for it.
I don't mean to rain on your parade, and while I have no experiance of the King Country re tightness of the road, I reckon that using 50kph then add a couple of hours cause of the different riding speeds, large group and distance i.e. 427 kms will be about 9 hours + 2 i.e about 11 hours for the trip. So with a 10am start this will mean into Taumarnui at about 9pm so you then need to allow an hour for tea i.e. a 12 hour ride so 10pm arrive into Taumarnui. Hopefully I'm being pessimistic and this is not going to be a big deal but from experiance with organising many adv rides and dealing with large groups you never move as fast as planned.

On a much more positive note to my last post I've used some technobable stuff (http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/) to convert the google maps route information into a gpx file that can be loaded onto GPS units. Took a bit of mucking around but the file is attached.
Click on the attachment and save the file to your hard drive but change the extension from .doc to .gpx. You can then load the file onto your gps using Mapsource or similar. Also if you start up Google Earth then click file, open then change the file type box (to the right of the file name box at the bottom of the open window) too GPS (*.gpx *.loc *.mps) you can view the file.
There are four routes each with 200 points, as per the four google maps. These routes should load onto a Zumo (will only hold 200 points per route) and will easily go onto newer eTrex and GPSmap units. 200 points per route is probably a few to many but more is better right?

Hey guys, all good points. I rode 2/3rds of the route in the rain on saturday and it took me 5 hours with short stops.:calm:
Reckon it should be do able by all in max of 10 hours
I have allowed for bailout points or roads to be skipped if we get too far behind time.
It would suit me to start the ride earlier than 10.00am but i was trying to allow enough time for those travelling on the saturday morning to get there on time.
The ideal end would be to arrive in taumarunui between 6-7pm. :buggerd:
What does everyone think, should we move the start time up to 9.00am
Still 1 bed and 1 matress / floor space available at my place for friday night

I guess getting dinner could be tricky that late, unless we could book in somewhere, pretty sure most places would keep the kitchen open a bit later for 10+ hungry riders.

I have to sign a indemnety for us lot,the gates will be open at both ends if we need to turn back it wont be a problem.
The track can be driven over in a car when dry but is a bitch on a quad when wet and doesnt follow the road anymore but is now a farm track most of the way. The cocky says it is easier to navagate from Matahiwi {river road} to the Paraparas,so it may be bloody boring, or a repeat of the south coast.
