Okay its not limited to adventure riding but thats the section i post the most in so here goes
Tell us how the recession has affected your riding ativities.
For myself my salary is made up of a base and % of profit, so for the last 8 months i have been earning abouts 2/3rds what i normally earn.
My biggest motorcyling cutback has been not updating my MX bike which is now 3 years old.
I have been buying budget brand tyres off trade me ( dont seem to get much less wear out of them than expensive ones ) i take my lunch with me on ADV rides instead of buying it at cafe`s.
And no farkling on the bikes, still trying to ride as much as i can but just doing it on the cheap.
My riding gear is getting a bit worn out but will have to go another round yet.
I know there are others out there who have lost their jobs or had their hours at work cut , so whats your story

just traded up and hope like hell I don't find myself having to sell it in 6 months time. Not new, but better bike.
Have a backup plan on the job front too incase my current one is cut.

Well my work situation has gone down the pan due to the world financial turmoil/recession and am lookin for extra/new job now, BUT I'll sell the car and get an older/cheaper one before I sell my new DR for darn sure! Shame I need the car really, but got 2 kids age 3 & 5 so wot ya gonna do!
Funny but I've started to think more like Mark now = do I really need the D606's when there's cheaper options for tyres?
Still the recession thing has at least got me off my arse to get rid of stuff on TM I should've sold ages ago!
My one big vice is coffee, so yeah maybe i'll start being sensible and doin the sandwiches thing more often than I have out on rides, but good coffee mmmmm not ready to give that up yet(maybe have few less cups or cut down from bowl lattes though!). :gob:

being self employed the recession means I have more time to go riding but sooner or later I will suffer the consequences of that and have less money to go riding with.

i have been told i wont be getting any more overtime or sixth day - that suits me since i never had time to ride. now i will have the whole weekend free in 3 more weeks
down side is less money - just had to buy new bike back tyre, 2 for the car, 2 reg and now my dr350s stator has died. 3 bikes and 2 cars may get a bit too much for my partner and i so i might have to get rid of her civic
my new vmax will be put on hold for another decade or two and it will take a bit longer to pay off my girlfriend and daughters overseas trip but at least i made the most of my overtime while i could - now i have time to play
my boarder lost her job and owes us $750 so times are tough for her. will get tougher when she stops avoiding us and comes back to get her stuff...

Recession, what Recession!!! but seriously, it has afected the number of hours, and amount of cash I have available for riding. Have gone to cheaper brands for rear tyres. Am working more hours at my main job, as a part time Business I own isn't producing the income that it was. The other hole in my budget is a teenager who wants to go on a school trip to Japan, Hence no full weekend rides for me at the moment.
Dave any coffee is fine as long as it is on special, except for the real cheap brands:yes:

I'm still busy at work (electrician) and havent got time for a recession, but Dawns work has been quiet since Xmas and work has been coming in dribs and drabs. We were wondering if we could still afford to go to the Sth Island but are going anyway. I figure if we dont go then that just fuels the fire as the money we would have spent on accom. food, ferry crossing etc is needed to keep everybody else employed.
Anyway, I would have been really shitty if couldnt get a Sth Island ride in before winter !!!!

Funny you should mention this as i was thinkin of starting a thread on ways to do things on the cheap re adv riding etc.
so far the recession hasn,t impacted on me personally, but it is in the back of my mind and anything I buy now i think long and hard about but then think that will not help the recession at all if i tighten up.

weren't you enjoying the job?
Job was pretty good, but the shop was just making enough during the good times, and since Jan, the owner has been bleeding money for several reasons outside my control, so he is concentrating on his Ch Ch bike shop.
(he has asked me to move there, and it is still a possibility, but kanny is busy at her work, so may be in spring).
Gives me time to work through a heap of projects gathering dust, plus lazy 10am starts on cold winter Mondays.
Recession's rock!

Yeah I think it's gonna be tricky for some. Luckily as a sparky as well the next few months will be busy as people discover their lites & heaters etc don't work then traditionally it goes dead - as in real dead before spring arrives & people start with their new projects again.
What may hit harder is the reduction of new big contracts & less new houses being built. Bigger companies start hunting out any work they can get & often the only option laid off sparkies can do is do cash jobs for friends etc that takes those jobs out of the pool.
I have been talking to guys from seperate companies that are about to lose staff however noone knows who it will be - not a nice environment to work in.
Still we do have it bloody good compared to many so I just try to remember that as I crawl thru another batt filled ceiling:sweatdrop

I was laid off in Feb after 6 months of half-expecting it. But with a baby arriving last year we have been doing it drastically tougher for the last 12-18 months anyway as we've gone from 2 jobs/2 mouths to 1 job/3 mouths. In that time, all big financial outlays have been on hold (renovations and bike rebuild) and we may have to live off the accummulated 'project' funds. Meri has gone back to work full-time until I get useful income again, either a job or my own consulting business takes off.
Basically we've cut back on everything. We really pick and choose the things we do, eg on the bike front still do at least one decent day ride per month, not off every weekend for a ride, not racing. But part of the reduction has simply been new family commitments: don't have free time like we used to, either.
Sold the car in January and held off replacing it pending news of redundancy. Now we have a little $100 shitter for town use, not big enough to holiday in and a helluva lot less safe than a post-1996 import. Not big enough to tow the bike trailer, either.
Bike-wise I'm doing more work myself, and getting favours from mates for the tough jobs that I used pay for. Consumables will be cheaper shorter-lived lines - to a point - pushing out costs till later even if they aren't as good $/km. Will ride the bike less on quality gear rather than more on inferior gear.
But it has been great being a full-time stay-at-home dad. That's not an experience too many fellahs would have, nor one money can buy.

I'm a sparky by trade - feck I grew to hate batt filled ceilings - black taping your overalls cuffs to try and keep the shit out.
Actually I hated ceilings full stop - especially a low pitched batt filled tin roofed house on a summer afternoon - feck that was just horrible
I started installing data cabling and that was much easier and better money

Thats the upside of a recession if it brings familys closer together , I've spent many years as a hands on dad while running our mussel farming buisiness (or was that using kids for slave labour instead of doing correspondence lessons?)
We've had 2 price reductions this year ,eat alot of meals out of the ocean and garden and will wing it on the credit card for a months motorcycling next month

For a single young man, the recession is only just starting to bite. Luckily in the first couple of months of the year the boss put most of the contractors (me included) on salaries. Took a slight paycut (which meant a new bike was taken off the radar), but the income security is much appreciated. My freelancing business has taken a slight slide, but enough to keep me busy in the evenings, and most weekends I'm away with the Territorials.
Position: Stable.

Similar situation with the car, my partner needed a new car and we were always planning on buying a small 4WD for her, but with the way things are........
So we traded a 2000 Mitsi lancer at work with a cooked engine and only 30 000 kms, so i brought that very cheaply and have been reconing the engine myself.
Bike wise being a mechanic by trade i have always done all my own repairs

As I understand it, one aspect of our "over cooked" economy is that the value of our exports haven't been matching our imports, so now the "chickens are coming home to roost". Many people & businesses have been greedy & wasteful, to meet a percieved standard of living that our nation simply cannot afford. Plus the bloody banks & finance companies have been lending on little equity, in fact speculating with their investors money. Then add in the fact that many people who have been making important business decisions (e.g financial "advisors"), actually have no experience of what happened during the last decent recession (late 80's). Another part of the problem is that many businesses are geared only for growth and don't have equity to reduce debt.
I'm probably being a negative bastard & hopefully I'm wrong, but I think the worst is yet to come. So called industry 'analyst's have been predicting that whatever level the economy drops to at the end of March (financial year), we probably shouldn't expect to see any improvement for a further 12 months. So if a business isn't geared to cope with that or isn't able to diversify, then further redundancies and or busines closurers are inevitable.
While I admit NZ is at the mercy of overseas financial markets, I think too many people forget that our prosperity is very reliant on primary production (agriculture, horticulture, forestry etc). We have just had the South Island Agricultural Field Days and I'm pleased to say there was an air of optimism amoungst farmers, especially sheep, beef & deer producers. Whether that translates to actual spending or just debt reduction, remains to be seen.
A big part of my income is effected by dairy & vineyard developments, so I have to be realistic & postpone any thoughts of upgrading my toys. And the shit would really have to hit the fan before I would consider selling them.
In the meantime my bikes are the perfect release from any worries about the economy. Being able to get away from it all by going overland or 'the long way' is one thing that makes adventure riding so special. Plus I'v yet to meet any pretentious wankers on adv bikes.
Rant over.

My industry is looking down the barrel of growth due to the current gubberment's desire to increase infrastructure spending as a means of stimulating the economy. Whether this will be a reality or not remains to be seen (I'm a little doubtful at present but it is good for me in the mean time). Also I'm lucky enough that in my specialist field there is a large shortage of people. There are regular efforts to get Poms in my field out here to fill positions and in turn the Ausi's are often over here trying to get kiwis to "leave home".
Sorry to be positive when many of you are doing it hard but this recession so far is a good thing for my wife and I - lower mortgage rates being a key contributor. We are looking to pay of significantly more principle on our mortgage due to lower interest rates. We are also considering another significant expenditure in the next few months if all goes to plan. Knowing my luck all will probably not go to plan but one can only hope.
I'll stop being such a positive prick now. I have to admit it is very sobering reading the previous posts on how difficult life has become for some. It provides some context for me and makes me appreciate where I am in life.
Cheers R

There doesn't seem to be the scorn heaped upon those involved as there was with the YUPPY of the '80's.Maybe because just about everyone was sucked into spending money they didn't have....because everyone else was.I was a bit staggered when people would spend up well beyond their means just because the banks and estate agents valued their shit box house at 3 or 4 times it's real worth. The smart ones cashed in on the over inflated value, and bought something valued at it's real worth....and kept the change. The ''toys'' came out of this thinking - seems like everyone who didn't know how to ride, but would like to,had a KTM in the garage.Just as many finally had a HD in theirs. It's going to be hard for them to give up the Lego and have to make do with guns made out of clothes pegs.
I've never had flash bikes, and have weathered many a financial storm, there is always a way to ride.Everything I have is from the '80's,and can stay.I've reduced the registered and insured bikes down to one - something from the '80's I can repair easily, and modify as I desire for little cost.A much more useful bike that will cover the tasks of many, last longer, and never go out of fashion. And always looks good in black....

In the late 80's I was working for IBM in Sydney. Lots of workmates then had 3 kids and a mortgage that had climbed from 7% to nearly 20% interest... not easy and none of their doing, these were modest family people who'd allowed for a climb to the mid-teens but that last 5% was trouble. My term deposits to pay for uni were earning high-20s. IBM had a "full employment" policy, ie you had to under-perform despite remedial initiatives for 9-12 months to get the sack. When the company dived with the recession, first they tried to improve morale by reiterating the above, then they started sacking people for the first time in its history. An interesting time to be there, just observing corporate behaviour. And some ppl wonder why I am cynical about big corporations.
Around then I went from $40/week in juice for the 5.0L V8 to $10 in the CBX250. Wasn't my car but man did the running costs suck (went OK though with sticky tyres :devil2:).
Hey Ryan, someone has to be positive and keep spending money, keep the economy ticking over ;).
In reality my job was removed (I suspect) as a sneaky way to restructure the company. Anecdotally there's plenty of work, as ppl are prepared to pay for systems that save them money.
Down in this part of the country, judging from tyre sales dirt biking seems to have stopped but the Harley and sportsbike market are stronger than ever. Put it down to dirt bikes being more of a toy for those with less, and the ppl with expensive bikes are more sorted financially so haven't had to give it up (yet).
And if we're apportioning blame, let's not forget the sub-prime market in the USA where ppl were given mortgages for 110% of the house value. The extra 10% was spent on booze, bikes & easy women, then they f@cked off leaving the investors out of pocket. That's not something that happened here, as far as I'm aware. NZ is simply caught in the aftermath. The financial systems are linked behind the scenes.

So far so good for us.
My work is doing very well. We've just had three very good months, January sales were a record, and we are crazy busy. Having said that, we are part of a public company and some of the other entities that are part/fully owned by our company (some in Oz), are not doing so well and have had to restructure, reduce staff, take salary cuts etc, so the overall result of our public company is not so great.
Hubby works for an earthmoving firm. One of their bigger clients recently went down the gurgler owing substantial $. However hub's firm seem to be still ticking over and very busy at times, so haven't had to reduce staff as yet.

Well, for a while there I thought I was the only one without any work, glad some of the rest of you are joining in!
With the building industry having crashed to a stop up here there's not a lot of scope for drawing pictures of houses and its been a quiet couple of months now. However, it's also been a chance to sit back and decide whether I want to continue in this line or find something different for the next 20 years, so I'm currently investigating a career change....
Biking, well I have looked at the 990 and thought "maybe I should have kept the DR, thats another 10k sitting there" but we are a way off that decision yet and in the interim it's a matter of not spending as readily and keeping spending to the real neccessities, not the frivolities (unfortunately the new rear tyre on the 990 gets called a frivolity now). :pinch:

10 people at my employers made redundant - ranged from sales to technicians.
Fortunately for me I dodged that particular bullet but now workiing twice as hard to keep up. The pisser is that we had the work, but seems no-one is paying for it.
Has it affected my adv riding? Buying second hand tyres and making at home what other people pay for. But we KLRistas are notoriously cheap arse even in good times. Wondering if I could get the thing running on used cooking oil and if I did, how much of a power increase I could expect?

This thread has been a great read - good to hear what is going on and unusually for this site this thread is packed with some down to earth honesty about some pretty trying personal stuff.
My main income is from sheep farming - we're getting around $30/lamb more than last year so that has been really good. The downside and reason theres not a lot of frivilous spending by sheep farmers is that this follows 3 tough years of poor prices, plus lamb numbers are generally back on many properties due to the flow on effect of last years drought.
In my case I had to write the biggest fucking cheque of my life to get settlement with my ex late last year (after 2 years of protracted negotiations) and had to fix the interest rate for a year - before they started coming down.
So if it wasn't for the extra debt servicing we'd be having a really good year.
As it is - I am careful with expenditure but it hasn't curtailed any biking - there seems to be enough other things that do that!!. Having said that if I can't get out on the Tiger I can usually jump on the Gasser for a pretty exciting blast around here.
From what I have read (thoroughly recommend reading Gareth Morgan's article in the latest Listener - explains the background well and his thoughts for whats coming) - I also agree that this thing isn't going to turn around any time soon and could get a lot worse yet in NZ.
Good luck for all you guys finding work

My thoughts are with you guys that have had unexpected 'career changes ' thrust upon you. I have been lucky so far, but you can never be sure what's going to happen next week. I know one of our local KB guys has had his bike on Trademe because of these circumstances.
On the riding front, I am sticking pretty close to home these days to try and cut costs unfortunately. . although I spent far too much at the bikeshop last month. I had to buy new Z6 tyres for my RS. The prices makes dirt bikers like me wince. . . and I just couldn't resist those matching leather trou. . !
If anything changes I'll be in deep $!@#. I'll be very happy if I can get through this year and will be thankful if I can keep what I've got.
Best wishes to you all.

Well it's safe to say someone hasn't told my bike about the recession, It cost me $450 on parts just the other week! And they took two weeks to arrive and then they had the wrong parts!
Luckily for me though work is going well and my department is having a bumper year. Sorry to be a positive prick like my brother. Didn't realise the country was in such a sorry state.

Yup, the recession has caused me to use my bike to get to work, which saves me $40 per week in fuel
did you need an excuse???
I guess im lucky, no sign of slowing down yet, and as a backup my old boss back in aus rang me 2 weeks ago wanting to know when id be back, he's got 30mths worth of contracts signed, should have been back by now but just found out got another kid on the way so wont be going anywhere for a few months now:doh:

Two record months in a row... roll on adventures
Cheers R
So far so good for us.
My work is doing very well. We've just had three very good months, January sales were a record, and we are crazy busy. Having said that, we are part of a public company and some of the other entities that are part/fully owned by our company (some in Oz), are not doing so well and have had to restructure, reduce staff, take salary cuts etc, so the overall result of our public company is not so great.
Hubby works for an earthmoving firm. One of their bigger clients recently went down the gurgler owing substantial $. However hub's firm seem to be still ticking over and very busy at times, so haven't had to reduce staff as yet.

Somethin will come up Paladin, it always does.
I remember in a previous recession when I was living in Greymouth, I used to go into the labour department (winz now), every week and ask about the jobs on the wall, and they always said no there was nothing available even though they were posted there. Then one day after 6 months of being on the dole i went in and the lady looked at her file and realised I had been coming in for 6 months and got me a job the next day.
Apparently after 6 months you are classed as long term unemployed and to keep this figure down they wouldn't even try in the first 6 months. (wankers).
Problem was a lot of guys lost heart and never went back after a while.
To be honest I had a ball fishing, riding me gxser and playing footy, and as long as the club kept paying for me beer I was as happy as a sandboy.:niceone:

There are jobs out there, I'm just not sure I want the one I got!
As I have been sitting in front of a PC for the last 15 years I thought this (no work, no income) was a great opportunity to get something outdoors to do (the money would help as well...). Seeing as I live next door to where the new Mangere bridge and roadworks are being built I trotted off down there and asked if they needed any bald, skinny, white men. After the laughter had died down the kind people at Fletcher Construction made me an offer I couldn't refuse:
1. Turn up at 7.00am (I didn't know there was a time called 7.00am until last week)
2. Climb about 2 Km up a scaffold on a bridge pier in wind and rain with a bunch dodgy islanders (actually very friendly, it's just that we don't communicate very well...I'm learning the nuances of "bro" at present).
3. Spend 10 hours wandering around being yelled at by a semi psycopathic Irish foreman variously thumping bits of reinforcing steel and wading in new concrete.
4. Go home completely knackered at 5 or 6 (dependant on what needs thumping apparently) and fall asleep immediately.
5. Get paid peanuts for the enjoyment.
I have a sneaking suspiscion they're running a sweep to see how long I will last, there is far too much solicitous enguiry as to my level of enjoyment with this undertaking.
However, this little character building exercise has its upside:
I now realise that using my brain is a major part of the enjoyment I gain from work and not using it really hurts.
Working outdoors when it hails sucks.
There is a cure for procrastinating about getting a job and this is it!
Right, off to find a better job before this one kills me.

Got to spend 4 hours in WINZ todayI sympathise. My case manager (who is excellent, 2 thumbs up) said, 'bring the stuff back, just hand it in at the front desk'. So I bring the stuff in to the front desk, the first response was 'you can't do that', then in response to my obvious reply, 'you shouldn't have been told that, it's wrong' then 'do you have an interview?' (No, they want this stuff first, then they'll book the interview once they've processed it) followed eventually by, 'well they're not here today, I'll just put these in their tray'. Du-uh. The silliness of dealing with govt depts has started already. This on top of a 'receptionist' that does actual work: all the ppl waiting in line to announce their arrival for a meeting, hand in forms, collect blank forms etc wait and wait and wait because no-one is available to direct traffic.
I've been told to go to the Richmond office because they handle mainly retirees who don't put up with any such crap.
My wife commented that WINZ et al will probably have to sharpen up their act, with a potential influx of clients aware of proper business processes and customer service.
just cos my kids only spend officially 40% of their time with me, my ex gets all the benefit for the kidsIn my opinion, the system is geared towards the mothers because there's so many lousy fathers; and the good fathers get screwed over just in case and/or to make up for the bad ones they can't catch. I have a friend in a similar position; his ex is clever enough to not let him have equal care, so that he has to pay her. But the best thing is that junior still considers Dad's place as home.
If it weighs more than a loaded chilly bin, get a forklift:done:A properly loaded chilly bin should require a forklift.

Well done for taking on a job like this, especially during this time of the year. it won't get any easier with winter coming. Keep using your brain and see what you can learn from these guys, it might come in handy.

Recession - I find myself in a job where I get the feeling that they are trying to get rid of me, consequently am not enjoying it at all at the moment. I am very lucky as I have a new Partner who has told me that if I do leave she will support me. In the meantime we are watching what we spend money on. I refinanced the mortgage two weeks ago to get a better interest rate (yes it did cost a few thousand dollars but I like the knowledge that if I do lose my job that my mortgage payments are much lower).
My 990 will stay. My DR400 has an oil leak from the front sprocket which I need to get fixed (you mechanics out there is that a biggy?) and I might sell it. I only rode it once last year and have only done one trail ride on it this year (the second would have been today except for that leak!) With a new Partner we now have an extra car so if things do turn to custard my Impreza might have to go.
To help save any of you a few dollars, if you need accomodation in New Plymouth for a few nights you are more than welcome to come and stay with us.

there are so many smaller 1 man bands around the wairarapa at present.
also a lot of farmers are buying there own machines now.
was talking to a farmer other day as i was drilling pole shed holes on his farm, 60 of them..
he was saying he spent $60,000 on digger works over last few years, and was asking what price he could pick up his own second hand digger for.
its just to hard and cost is to high to start from scratch.
not only machine to pay for but you need to transport it,
truck and trailer, or flat bed truck, then theres fuel reg, wofs, RUG,it adds up quick.
unless you have a machine desgined for a special job, say drilling, water pipe laying, every man and his digger can clean a drain or water table, even if he makes a mess.
he dosnt have to hire a machine and then pay for a operator to do the job, he can do, even if it takes him longer.
so now days its just not worth the hassel.
i did think about buying a heavy transporter truck and trailer, but again costings, then trying to pay for it.
keep it working.
cheers .

That's very kind of you Mark, but at the end of the day, whether Joe & are dead keen or not makes no difference if all the other guys in the area aren't bothered to go out riding!
It always feels to me that in the Welly/Kapiti/Hutt/Wairarapa area there's a good GROUP of keen blokes and if one isn't suggesting the next ride then someone else is, eg yourself(!), and that's whats built this momentum for us all!!!!!! Half the fun of all the rides is the fact that the group is full of blokes who are just lovin it & dead keen!!!!
I appreciate you recognising I'm a keen barsteward tho, cos I am LOL!

Well if I am absolutely honest with myself; I would rather be on my bike than dive around Welly!
The only downside is if I ever do go to Pacific islands to dive i won't have my own gear, but not a major headache! And the PADI Instructing i have done in Welly is freelance and doesn't pay diddly; basically do it for the fun of it, plus I'm signed off of teachin by OSH til my hernia op done anyway.
So yeah hard to do as that gear is damn expensive, but maybe right time to do it! My dry suit, Regs & Dive Computer particularly are bloody good ones so bit of a bummer, but as i said; rather be out adv riding anyway these days, so all good!!!

Make friends with sheep and beef farmers Struan - our lamb prices are bloody close to $40 per head more than last year and all indications at this stage are that will hold at that level (barring a significant rise in the $NZ) next year and beyond.
Wool is still a basket case but the stirrings are there that if it all goes well will see wool rise to be a more valuable commodity over the next few years.

OK, so here's what we'z gonna do:
We need Nordie to hack skynet (aka Google) and divert all internerd searches for "courier" to a new website we're (ie CooneyR - he seems savvy enough :msn-wink:) gonna set up which will offer nationwide services for motorcycle couriers.
We'll have the DB1k SBC riders servicing the cities, the plated trailbikes doing the regions & rural routes and the bigger bikes doing the long legs.
We'll get trade rates on gas & parts for the mother company, passed on to us all who are contracted for our diligent and timely riding services.
Anyone who is currently employed can chuck their job and give it to an unemployed pleb so you can earn a gazzilion dollars a year doing what we love doing.

I'm not sure about me being internet (HTML) savy. I've just spent 2 hours trying solve problems to get the latest Points of Interest up for the DB1k. Turns out that Google really doesn't like the Irish (Cooney is Irish by the way) cause my problem was that is really didn't like the apostrophe in O'Connell. Two hours to figure out that I had to delete a damn ' :angry2::angry2::angry2::angry2::bash::bash::bash: :bash:

yeah I'm in the game of money, aka bringing out the worst in people. Manage a little building business. my biggest doubt is the volume required to make it viable - won't get rich carrying an envelope from palmy to wellies - but one bike carrying heaps will, you know what I mean. Hence divert all google searches to us...and maybe the odd phishing / virus attack on Courier post etc for a bit of extra referral :bleh:.
But yeah have a look around wellies Joe - is there a M/C courier? be ideal to have one linking the cities - ie Hutt, Porirua and CBD. bikelists will have the cbd sewn up but I'm sure "Wellington M/C Couriers" would be pretty popular filling that gap between the cities, splitting peak traffic lanes etc :niceone:, including overnight between Wellington and the Wairarapa.
Dunno if I'm serious here or not, but hey, jsut chucking ideas out into the ether!
Bullshit, was a word that sprung to mind. Buuuuuuut. I have heard of instances where hospitals pay taxis horrendous money to transport blood etc in emergency situations. The company I work for sometimes has urgent courier deliveries on weekends between factories, which costs $$$.
If you could tap into some of that action, and be on call 24 hours, 7 days, who knows. Big problem is being limited to small packages.

Actually they supplied the bikes and did all the maintenance, paid the insurance & there was no weekly rental.
Because of that the job rates were lower than other companies but I was still clearing 450- 500 pounds or more a week running about 2 dozen central city jobs a day plus I'd get outside the M25 2 or 3 times a week so I was happy with that arrangement. A quiet week might have got down to 350 pounds. All I had to do was put gas in the bike and ride it.

mate those motorbike couriers in London are fricken nutters. They all seem to ride big bikes too and there are thousands (hundreds) ((lots)) of them.
I lived just outside London from '85 - '91 working as a professional photographer, and with most of my clients in London, I didn't own a car, but purchased a brand new (1987) KLR600 for trips to the city
The big advantage of an adventure bike ( especially 600's up ) was the fact that the handlebars were high enough to be above everyones wing mirrors - VERY useful when lane splitting :-) :2guns:
I only got knocked off the bike twice in all that time - worst time was getting T-Boned by a car coming out of a side road, result was me sliding across the 4 lanes of Tottenham Court Road watching cars and busses taking evasive action..... new undies that day :-) :shit:

Lets just say that lucky for me, the roads were slightly less congested in the 80's compared to today - I can still remember the vision of looking up at the chassis of a double decker bus coming towards me as I slid across the road. The bike ended up on the opposite footpath and lucky for me, the left radiator and tank took most of the impact which saved my knee from being smashed. The driver went for a skate as he was coming the WRONG way out of a one way side street when he hit me :-) :2guns:
Bike was insured. Two Thousand pounds worth of camera gear wasn't :-(

Ever thought about leasing/hiring/buying a digger say 3-5 tonne and a small truck and working for y'self
Orrrrrr become a consultant :2thumbsup
junkmanjoe
22nd June 2009, 20:47
its just no worth the trouble, in the long run.
by the time you hire a digger aprox $50-$70 and hour, then a small truck to carry it around on, aprox $70-$100.
then diesel costs on top of that, then dumping charges for spoil, then costings for fill to do the job, and before all of that, you have to try and sell your self to people, to get work, eather radio or paper, or word of mouth.
after all that, you have to charge enough for the job, to cover your costs and try and make money on the job.
there is so many little out fits around our area, its just not worth it.
but yes i have looked in to it a little while ago, and have seen people start up and then close down soon after as well.
its just winter, and its not time for the bigger companys to turn over contracts, its soon but not quite yet.
ive still got CV's out with 5 major road construction companys and all have told me to wait for 2-3 months, when they take off again.
it will come, my number will come up....
cheers for your thoughts.

Guess if we asked nicely (please please please:drinknsin:drinknsin) we could just arrange to shift the Wgtn crowd up to take advantage of the convenient base...
Mate, frankly I'd rather that you got a job in the 'rapa, just for purely selfish reasons. :grouphug:
Whanga Rd is definitely on the summer unfinished business agenda.
Now what's the goss re Paladin's bike & your issues with the cops? You can't talk about that on the periphials, then not spill the beans

I want to do it again during this winter
it wouldn't be a challenge in the dry
I might do something in August - a "shitty track" tour - Whanga/Fishers/42nd plus anything else that can be squeezed into a long weekend
