View Full Version : Canterbury: Chch Wednesday Maintenance Evenings
phoenixgtr
20th April 2009, 12:50
We have the opportunity to hold basic maintenance evenings in a fully equiped workshop. We ran these for the first time last year and they we're well received. This is a good chance to learn a bit about the mechanics of bikes and the maintenance of them. If you have something specific that you need done on your bike, but don't want to tackle it yourself then bring it along. If you post up on here beforehand we can be prepared on the night.
These really are just an excuse for us to get together and have few beers (or bourbons), so we usually head to the pub afterwards.
Where: Gloucester Motor Company
Cnr Gloucester Street & Fitzgerald Avenue
When: From 6pm each Wednesday (we usually give up and head to the pub (either The Twisted Hop, Poplar Lane or the Speights Ale House, Bealey Ave) around 8pm).
A huge thanks to Wayne (Wofman) for letting us use his workshop for these!!

Like I said in the other thread can we try somewhere else this year?
Like where the beer is not so dear and we can sit inside for a change?

Second post!
Bugger that I missed out on the first one.
I don't know if I should come to these - my bike is pretty bulletproof.

I'm definitely interested, even though I don't have a bike, would you mind if I tagged along?

Lemans - make a suggestion
McWild - maybe if you were shooting it with plastic ball bearings
KiwiPhoenix - sure you can come. The more the merrier

Man I could have really done with this a week ago when I was pulling the brakes apart. Maybe I can bring it along when the last set of seals arrive in case someone hasn't seen or dealt with it before...:woohoo:

Lemans - make a suggestion
Well I'm open to suggestion's as well.
It's a nice place but, lets face it the prices are not cheap there.
And we stand outside in the cold.
I think there has to be a better place.
At least a place we can stand inside.

Speight's ale house in Bealey Ave does that work??
Plenty of parking, not too far from the garage, not madly over priced and for those who want a bar snack there's that as well. :woohoo::woohoo: works for me

Speight's ale house in Bealey Ave does that work??
Now that is a top idea.
And better than mine.
We go to Pomeroys just up the road for our RAT meetings.
Not the cheapest and parking could be a problem, if you want keep an eye on your bike.

Speights on Bealey has a decentish loyalty scheme as well.
LOYALTY POINTS can be redeemed at any time. You get 50 cents off Bealey’s house wine and tap beer. For every $1.00 spent, you get one point. Every 10 points is worth a redeemable $1.00 in food at Bealey’s Restaurant. It doesn’t take long to start reaping the rewards. We look forward to seeing you soon and hope in the future you enjoy our Southern Hospitality.

Hey any chance of doing a chain and sprockets on my bike? I have an idea on how to do it but would prefer a more informed watchful eye present.
Waiting on parts at the moment though.
phoenixgtr

We did a chain on Liv's bandit last year so I don't see why not. I've also changed sprockets before. The front ones can be difficult but should be doable.

I would appreciate it to the tune of beer (so really, really appreciate it) if someone tomorrow could give my powervalve a look or a listen. I think I may have damaged it at Ruapuna on Saturday as the engine has been feelinng very very odd since then. Not sure if it is even the powervalve mind, but any help would be appreciated.
It could just be that I'm running Shell 91 atm instead of Mobil 91 like usual, as I had to fill up asap after Ruapuna. But yeah. Please please please.

Powervalve being worked on atm, it will be a bit slower as a result but this should extend its lifetime by a fair bit. I SHOULD have it by Wednesday, but I wouldn't hold my breath, due to it being a complicated process.
Might be able to turn up on my scooter though. We could go through the removal of a front brake disc, as I need to check out the pads.
Also, if anybody is looking at new gear or anything else (even a bike), from Avon City Suzuki (by Sockburn roundabout, top guys by the way) I have a voucher for $493 that needs using, and I'm willing to trade however much you need from it for cash, with a 5%-10% discount for you. PM me if you think this appeals to you.

Well the new bike needs its indicator pulled apart because it sticks when you push it left.
If I get oil we can do an oil change too and at some point the brakes are going to need to be blead. Simple things to learn.

I am now the proud owner of a 1978 YB100 bucket race bike!
Stripped right down, with a four speed gear box, necessity to premix two stroke oil, and an ear shattering exhaust, this is the bucket that will end all other buckets. If you can even call them buckets.
Too intensely powerful to even idle without constant revving, this is the bucket you can expect to see and smell roaring past you on the racetrack, leaving all you wusses on FXR150s crying for the sweet satisfaction of a two stroke.
Have fun trying to sleep tonight, bucketaroos and bucketeers...

I nearly cried, but after inspection hardly any damage!!
There are a few scratches on speedo and tiny one on pack rack. She didn't go all the way down so no road (or car park) test performed.
Kind of a catch 22, if I hadn't parked so close to wall, she would have gone right over, but if I had parked further away perhaps the tarmac would have been more solid...I did think perhaps the gods were either testing me or saying I should stay home...:bleh:I'm still going :msn-wink:

Not when the asphalt gives way. Sometimes it's pretty thin and doesn't take much to punch a hole in it. I know somebody whose bike came close to being written off as a result of that happening (brand new Speed Triple back when they were the latest thing and parts were expensive to come by).

Reminds me of this one time, in Wanaka. We we're doing a tour of the south island in the middle of summer. In Wanaka it was unbearably hot (esp. in leathers). We pulled up and I put my bike on it's sidestand and jumped off. The stand literally started sinking into the road and the bike started to topple over. Luckily I was still standing next to it so I dived under it. Hardly a scratch on it, but it was close!!
By the way, the guys at Pitlane fixed my puncture for $20 so no new tyre for me. Cheers guys

To be honest it doesn't really need any work to it. Just got to get used to draining the bowl after racing so that the oil/fuel mixture doesn't harden in the cylinder, apply some chain lube, and once I can afford it fit a bigger carb.
The photos make it look worse than it is, it's actually in pretty top nick, and runs really well.

I'll have to take your word for it buddy, looks like would be lucky to hit 50KM but what do I know! Look forward to seeing it on the track
Omg... so tired... just spent an hour running up and down the street trying to start the damn thing, hasn't happened...

Please explain I am keen to hear:bleh::laugh:

Ok so it runs really well when I can start the bloody thing hahaha.
It was only because it hadn't been started for over a week, same thing with my RG last night it ran like a right dog til it had cleared the crap from it's system.
I did manage to get it started eventually and went for a hoon round the local suburbs. Got more than a few dodgy looks from passers by haha, race numbers front and back, super loud exhaust, no plate, lights or indicators.
Good fun!
Plus I was doing it by myself (no one pushing) so that didn't help matters.
Good workout though. Did more running today than I have all month. All my bikes must have one thing in common: they must be character building. This fits the bill nicely.

So you are going to do two Brass Monkeys.
Keep safe because the weather looks like it could be crap.
:Offtopic: - Sorry
Shit was it ever. Actually the ride down to Inverveges was pretty good, well untill I headed over the hill into Dunners. Felt like someone was putting glass bottles into a large tree mulching machine and spitting it back at me. Couldn't see with visor up or down
One sign said "Open" the other "Snow". 20kms prior I had also switching my dodgy fuel system onto "R" for really better make it over the hill before run outta gas.
When I pulled in my face and body couldn't move. Roads pretty good all in all.
Have a groovy Wed' night, have one for me and I'll do the same for all of you!:chase:

Nice bike. Is it YB100 or 125? Looks very similar to mine. Will try and make it this Wednesday, since my bike is finally out from Canterbury Rides.

I need a mechanic who can replace some gaskets for me. Only problem is The bike shops I've rung don't have listings for GL145's anymore so the gasket needs to be made.
I'd do it but I'm a lazy prick who prefers to open my wallet. Plus I never was one of those kids who liked to put things back together, only pull them apart.
Can any of you kind folk reccommend someone for me?
Thanks heaps

It didn't work.
