Out of the 3ways to get up there I bet that was the only way possible in this weather.I considered trying the steep, direct route, but the chance of a BPHoS moment was pretty high. Wasn't sure if it was rocky & therefore grippy despite the rain. The rocks on the lower Maungatapu Tk were surprisingly slippery, like they were coated in greasy mud. I took that as a bad sign for the direct route.

The "easy" way was slippery enough, there must be a band of different clay for the first 100m off the road or perhaps it was all clay no rocks. The rest of the way was better; although some of the launches and landings over the... whatsits? - if they were bigger I'd call them contour banks - required focus.

All good fun :niceone: Definitely want to do more there, coming up from the Picton side has to be done.

coming up from the Picton side has to be done.

Yes it does - in the dry though! there is also an even steeperer "enduro" option which the DR-Z struggled with in the dry. Front wheel lifting, rear wheel spinning kinda stuff. Hellish fun, despite feeling like I was going to fall off the side of the hill! I was running a 15/44 though which isn't much good for technical / hill work in 1st.

Make sure you PM me, I'll be there on the fatty!

Where's that then? You don't mean the Havelock side?

nah, on the picton side of the hill there is a direct route "up" which is the right fork on the image below. I never went back to see what the alternative was, but on GE I put a placemark below to show where I mean. Would be a good video sesh!

I stuck em on because they were there, and I could, not because of the SBC :innocent: and it does look like a 250 baja, just need to make a mounting frame maybe with a grille in front(and a ralley type fairing)
They were donated from a gsxr750, to go on the Big.
And they now work!!!, there's no regulator that I can see so I just hooked in to a live wire when the bike was running and an earth(through a fuse of course)

anyone up for a night ride :headbang::headbang:

Sorry guys, bit of topic I know, as you were.........

Bloody hell James, the little brat is almost unrecognizeable! You could light up Welly from your place with that setup! Looks like you could be puttin up a serious challenge on the SBC if ya wanted!

If you're on dial up then why on earth are you trying to upload a picture with a file size of over 600kb instead of reducing it's size down to under 100kb first?
Here's your shot as an 87kb file. That would have uploaded in about a minute or two, even on wop wops dial up and there's nothing wrong with the photo in that sizing.

Are the valves shims or screw adjustable, if theyre adjustable then it's pretty straight forward to do em y'self.
AFAIK, they'd all be about the same (bike shops)

Padmei
25th June 2009, 20:29
Call them up & ask their rates. Most are around $65/hr.
More importantly than rates is the job they do & if they want you back as a customer. To me the effort they put in to keep you in the loop & help you out as far as what you don't need to spend money on.

You could learn to do them yourself - I'm going to...

FFS you couldn't have picked a more obscure place could you. :bash:
Can you make your pics bigger when you embed them plz.

Attaching pics > Save pic to desktop.....
> Open "reply to thread" page, down towards the bottom is a box with "additional options" and in there is a button with "manage attachments"on it, click on that........
> A new window will open, and up the top is a section called "upload picture from your computer", at the right is a button called "browse", click on that !
> Select "desktop"(thats why you put the pic there in step one), then click "open"
> Now click the button that says "upload"

Well, we knocked the bastard off:headbang:

Good on ya Woody, great tag, all in the name of adventure.
Jesus that Wairoa gorge is a miserable cold place in winter, real purdy for adventure motorsickles tho.
We don't need maps, just the enthusiasm to go exploring, and a bit of local knowledge!
Nelson's version of "CNUT hill" was kinda slick and icy in parts, I wouldn't recommend it to any noobs trying it.
In that matter I wouldn't recommend it for heavy KLR's either, Woody you're a legend. I skated down it on my worn out knobblies, found the tag, and tried to get back up CNUT hill but my rooted tyres were spinning up, so back along plan B.... the wet route. How many river crossing was that, 6 or 7? I dunno, lost count, maybe in was 8.
Bloody permafrost everywhere, some good ice in the puddles, and hoar frost along the river where the sun don't shine.

Note to self.... don't go there with tyres like mine. I must change these soon!

CrazyFrog

Wear thick wool socks in ya boots so when ya feet get wet they stay warm. And there is one hole in one of the 7 river crossing that has the potential to drown a bike. And one puddle that is verrrrrry deep. It would be too easy to tell you which one!:niceone:

Download the file from the GPS to the PC as a GPX file (assuming your have a Garmin GPS) then when you go to open a file in google earth just change the file type to GPS. If you dont have any software on your PC for talking to a GPS EasyGPS (http://www.easygps.com/default.asp) is a simply option.

I actually went in the way you came out cos I wasn't sure if I went down the hill I would get back up again if the river way was unpassable. tried getting up the hill but only made it to the corner before running out of traction, then had to turn and scoot down. The prob is turning it around in the small garage. I ended up with my back against the wall trying to push it backwards, and over it went. I saw a video somewhere of a person sorta spinning their bike on their sidestand - does anyone know how to do that, and could ya teach me??

seriously my shed is available and the sag thing needs explaining to me too in simple terms.Sounds like a plan; can we discuss in the Shed thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=102374), please?

BAM aaah shit, just dropped the bike putting it awayBugger! Small fuel spill is normal, usually comes out a carb float bowl overflow. Nothing to worry about, but if you have a vacuum fuel tap it may pay to put it to prime before trying to start the bike.

Personally I don't like spinning bikes on the sidestand, sitting on bikes on the sidestand etc as most bikes I've had, have had fragile sidestands that wouldn't put up with that kind of abuse. YMMV. I've always turned my bikes outside the confined space.

Oh FFS I knew I should've turned around and followed you when I went past, going the other way, on top of the hill in Annesbrook.
You wouldn't have recognized me, I had my tinted visor on :shifty:
but I did nod

Hrm sounds like I'll have to watch out for the sneaky "follow the tagger to the new tag location" technique in the future.:msn-wink:

So do I.
Funny this is, I was just discussing with Ben today about a ride across the creek and beyond the bridge.
Who's gonna make it there first I wonder?

You fellas make it too easy for me. Sometimes I just love shiftwork, I can go riding first thing Monday mornings.:first:

Location: Aniseed Valley, Hackett picnic area, start for the popular MTB trail, or tramping route up to Mt Starveall.
Lovely valley when it's not frosty, good waterholes in summer.

There a quite nice (ermmm...) GN250 converted into an adventure bike running around Wgtn.
Think it was originally converted for the CCA. Just the things for the vertically (or financially) challenged adventure rider!

Is there a carpark? If it's the same pace I'm thinking I thought you couldn't get to the beach.

CrazyFrog
23rd July 2009, 09:49
You can get down to the beach, gravity is your friend (but it's a small beach) The hard part is getting back up to the carpark .... a good knobbly and plenty revs will do it!

Stink one, it's raining, I'm not going there today. Yes, I'm soft, not stupid.

Is there a carpark? If it's the same pace I'm thinking I thought you couldn't get to the beach.Yes, you can, but not after rain with slick tyres. Okay, I'm telling fibs; getting down is rarely a problem, it's the getting back up.

So is it where you're thinking of?

Stink one, it's raining, I'm not going there today. Yes, I'm soft, not stupid. The other day when I was there in the dry, a road bike would do it. Just goes to show how dramatically conditions change with a bit of rain on clay. A few years ago we took over 5 hours to do a loop with trail bikes that took street-tyred boxers 40mins to do the previous year in the dry.

I figured the rain would put you off and let the others have a chance at it!

Warewolf, did you climb half way up the bank to take your photo?

Seeing it's Friday avo, and you boys probably want to ride this weekend, I'm gonna share this tag with ya all...... because this place is too special to miss out on. Good place in summer to take that special lady friend of yours, being nice and secluded and all:innocent:

New tag taken on beach, same spot as WW's tag.
Yes beach is accessible down small slope, it's actually easier than last time I was there, looks like quads have been using the beach access track. Just make sure your rear tyre has got some meat on it, cos it's a bit greasy after Thursdays rain.
Get out there and do it!

Would make an excellent two-up trip with a picnic hamper.:sunny:

I don't feel compelled to give the game away given so many of the other ones I've had no idea about.

Warewolf, did you climb half way up the bank to take your photo?Climbed up to the big rock outcrop. Shame I had an impromptu camera lesson after I took those photos, otherwise I could've done better.

Hmmm, I might have to do a tyre change today rather than shed night, and scoot out there tomorrow :Punk:
