Robert M. Pirsig's book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974) was a paean celebrating motorcycling.
Pirsig contrasted the sense of connection experienced by motorcyclists with the isolation of drivers who are "always in a compartment", passively observing the passing landscape.

In contrast, Pirsig argues that a motorcyclist is "completely in contact with it all... in the scene." The process and experience of motorcycling forces the rider into the present. The environment ...
  2. And on rolls the work + I have a new bike

Finally saved my pennies to get a Power Commander for Zensen (CBR125). So last night stripped the bike back ready to install it, only to find out it'll be here in 2 weeks (Doh). So I started to look at repositioning the muffler so it doesn't stick out as far. Now I'm rebuilding the header pipe and have started getting things ready to line up.

I've also just got rid of all my GSXR400's and the NT650 is gone for sale and I now actually have space in and around my garage.

  5. So, this racing lark ....

Vic Club, Round 4, The Return of the Novel (Hear Frenchy Sigh)

I decided ages back that seeing as I'd gotten my hands on a very cheap race bike I'd have a stab at this racing lark and chose Round 4 to be the meeting at which I popped the cherry.

The lead up to Round 4 was going to be busy as there was lots to do, but I had a plan and it was all under control. Right up until I got knocked on my arse by one of the nasty flu bugs that've been going around. All of a sudden ...
  6. There & Back Again…A Hobbits Tale

Another weekend with predicted foul weather, but that didn’t stop us riding today….again, although I was most surprised at how many ‘us’ was?! I had to work all of Saturday so I did the usual pre-lim’s, except for cleaning the bike and it could have done with a bit of a spruce up. ‘Oh well’, I thought, ‘it doesn’t matter, I’ll turn up, wait for a bit then decide whether to go straight home or perhaps enjoy a little detour.’

After monitoring the weather forecasts, I was fully kitted ...

  7. Motorcycle Safety Levy Update from ACC

by , 15th August 2010 at 20:46 (Motorcycling and An Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD))
Last March before the end of daylight saving I remarked:

Riding events and activities sponsored and supported by organisations and the private individuals that give generously of their time, are goals that can be set by those with the community spirit to improve motorcycle safety and hopefully reduce the rate of injury and fatality.
Thank you for your company, your time, your generosity and your encouragement.
Enjoy your weekend rides this winter.

  8. WFactor Racing RG150 Round Four

We didn't make to the track day this round, so drove up early on Sat morning. Nothing like an early morning road trip, good coffee on the way (I recommend the coffee cart on the right side of the road in Otaki!) and good yarns. We came well prepared this round and had a sweet set up including a table, coffe plunger, jug and toastie pie machine...all on a nice blue table cloth!! Next round, a vase with flowers.

Qualifying was a strange one again. It never seems to be consistent. This ...
