The adventure: Around the South Island of New Zealand from top to bottom. To be Completely conqured. From the first days of just talking with my brother on the rocky beach of Hawea planning to go on a massive adventure on our bikes. The only thing stopping us then was L plates and bikes with enough power. After a few years we are nearly there. Got the full licence. More importantly got the bikes. I'll be taking my SV650s. Joel will be on his GSX600f. ...
The sun comes out and we slowly start to stir. Suddenly the houses covered in dark are revealed. As I start to pack up and prepare for our long journey ahead, I am gestured over by an elderly man, who has water running from a hose in his garden and offers to let me wash myself. Though the water is freezing I gladly accept, being without a shower for a couple of days ...
What a day! Where to Start??? After the successful day last year in which we ended up with 19 riders and lot's of positive feedback, we thought about what had gone right and wrong in order to improve the event and over a period of time, thought about interesting prospects for this years route. In the end, we decided that SH43, or the Forgotten Highway should be the focus of the ride and then it was a matter of filling in 1000Kms, getting there and back on roads that ...
...and that's exactly what I've been up to. Well, almost nothing. Since the nice AA chappy dropped her off, the engine's come out and been stripped. I had a wee cry in the corner, and then bought a new engine. This had apprently been rebuilt. Hmmm..... a tight powervalve assemby made me have a closer look and I'm pleased I did. A few dodgy fixes in the motor have now been sorted, and now I am just awaiting some parts: fork seals, fork dust covers, engine gasket set etc, and then a weekend ...
After a busy week at work and sorting a few bits for the 1000Km Ride next week, we had the Training Day at Manfield to look forward to on Saturday. The weather forecast was quite variable all week and on Friday it looked like we might be in for a really crappy day, but a quick squiz at the rain radar at 0530 Saturday morning was reassuring that we should get through most of the day unscathed, however, coming home might be a different story. With the prospect that the 'wets' could ...
My first real road trip on a bike! An excellent 34 hours was had! Should have been longer, but another time will come. Left Christchurch Saturday morning, around 10am in drizzle , gassed up at Yaldhurst, got comfy, and were on our way. Shot up Old West Coast Rd, where a few other bikers decided it was the best route to take. The further up we went the less drizzle there was, and the cloud became less and less. Got into sunny Springfield ...
I have just completed my third Grand Challenge (GC or 1000miles in 24hours) and this was to be my first ‘normal’ one because my first was the 20th anniversary of the event, so it had a bit more hype with a film crew videotaping the whole affair and my second was the 21st anniversary so that had a 500Km extension added to mark the occasion with 2100Kms. So, hopes of doing ‘Just Another GC’ were put to rest this weekend as I believe, there is no such beast! I registered early in the ...
