    De-registered

    Hi All,

If you VIR check a bike and it says it was De-registered.. should that ring alarm bells? VIR also says registration has Lapsed...

Any advise would be useful.. thanks..

Some qualification of the question is needed for a definitive answer but an abridged version would be if it from this decade yes, last decade maybe, earlier than that not really.

Rego may have lapsed on the earlier years and after 2 years they automatically got de-registered, they don't show up as rego lapsed. Some folks buy a bike and rather than putting it on rego hold will de rego it, (dont ask me why I dont know) that could account for the ones from the last decade and possably some from this.

If you are concerned get someone to check it over, ask for the history, of course look for the obvious, it feels odd or the seller appears to be untrustworthy it possibly is a bad deal at the end of the day its your decision and life, a bad bike (or any vehicle) can be an accident waiting to happen.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

Deregistered means the registration has been deliberately cancelled.

As opposed to it lapsing because the owner didn't renew it

The most common reason for deregistration is because the bike has been in a crash. Insurance companies almost always deregister wrecks.

but there may be other reasons. maybe the owner wanted to reclaim the rego fee; or was very law abiding and took notice of the nag letter that LTSA sent him

No way to know. And the problem is, that if you want to revin it and put it back on the road, the inspector doesn't either

So he'll assume it was in a crash and you cop a really tough inspection including maybe having to get the frame certified for straightness

If the registration has lapsed AND been deregistered one MIGHT suspect that it simply lapsed from non payment and the owner deregistered it because he was very law abiding. Maybe.

It does depend upon the bike and its age however my first thought is that it was an insurance writeoff.

If it is a great deal, then it is worth checking out.

The Compliance check is quite thorough regarding OEM standards however as has always been stated, you do need to know that the frame and forks etc. are straight and true before taking such a risk.

    Good luck.

Thanks Guys, it was registered and sold to a suzuki motorcycle dealer in Whakatane a couple of times in its life.. Called them up and they said that the previous owner left it with them while he went to oz, then went AWOL for a while, eventually resurfaced and instructed them to sell. The dealer then re-registered and sold. Sounds fair to me.. I guess a Suzuki dealer wouldnt sell on the bike with any issues..?!?

Doesn't really tell you anything - maybe the guy was broke and never kept the registration up, and did not want to sell it.

No different than a car being de-registered for periods of time

Yup, basically the story, though turns out he went to Oz for a while and ended up staying for longer, leaving the bike in NZ.. finally he got in touch with a dealer and got them to re-register and sell it..
