Internal combustion engines need three things. They must have good-quality fuel, compression and a spark delivered to the compressed fuel/air mix at the appropriate time, or very close to it. Given those three items, an engine will run
    ."

I would check the carbs first. Did you have the tank off for a while?, if so, might take a bit to get going.

I recon you're on the money here. I did a 3 week stint overseas last year and when I came back it refused to start. First thing I did was drain the carbs, and then it started first time.

When an engine sits for a period with fuel in the carb bowls, the more volatile components of the petrol evaporate . This leaves a "thick" petrol in the carb bowl that won't vapourise properly or fire up. Though it usually takes quite a time, weeks at least if not months. Leave it long enough and what you'll have will be a thick sticky gum, which is hell to remove and certainly won't run a bike.

Same thing happens in the tank though on a lesser scale so it's an idea to give that a mix up.

Happens all the time with chainsaws cos they get used, then left for ages. Then won't start. Pull carby, drain tank, clean carby, replace fuel and all good

I was unfortunate enough to watch a rerun of "night rider" the other week.(for old times sake)

For some reason it wasn't as cool as I had remembered.

Cleaning the carbs sounds like a good idea..

Checked all the fuses (with a multimeter or visually?) If they don't blow, those little @@@@@@ roll out when you aren't looking and hide...

Make sure nothing from the loom is touching the frame and shorting out.. (just thinking wide here)

Is it turning over... starter motor going ok?

Check for sparks... you didn't do anything that would screw around with timing did you?

Is it making any sort of noise when you turn it over?

    Re-reading that:
Sounds like it wants to go... starter motor and electrics must be fine... carbs sound like the problem, check that you also haven't disconnected your fuel line like someone did recently *blush*

"Loosen the float-bowl drain screw and allow some of the fuel to run out. If possible, catch it in a small container. If there is water in the fuel, it will appear as globules. If water or lots of dirt is evident, drain the float bowls completely and allow them to refill before trying to start the bike."

I'm no expert, I'm just going what I've seen on the family's bikes and only am just getting the confidance to work and diagnose my bike's problems

THIS WEBSITE is a damn good help. And you almost *need* your shop manual / owners manual.

Be careful with those rubber diaphrams... they cost more than your bike.
