I would be shocked to find a busted seat o the pants student, riding around on the latest top shelf bike and likewise a high income earning sports bike fan getting around on a GN 250...

What most of you are answering is "Does my bike reflect my income?" That isn't the question - its about other peoples perceptions, not your own.

When I got back into rallies in 2005 I was gob-smacked at the machines which arrived. Back in the 1980s rat-bikes were common, of all ages and descriptions. Expensive bikes such as HD were unusual and drew attention.

Now there are millions of dollars of bikes casually strewn around on site and no-one pays much attention. In fact the rat-bikes are more likely to draw grins and admiration.

The simple explanation is bike buyers are older and wealthier than years ago. Our incomes (and/or savings) are higher. I don't see any need to be embarrassed by it. There will always be jealous envious types who sneer but they are just sad.

My income dictates I could buy a new $20k bike with just over 2 months of 40hr weeks. Trouble is though, I've been looking for months for a replacement since I binned mine and nothing I've seen appeals.

I'm not prone to just buying something just because I can - I prefer to get something I want. If there's nothing I want, that's exactly what I get.

Well, the bike will at least give you an idea of the minimum net worth of the owner... I mean, someone riding a Desmosedici isn't likely to be starving, no matter what priorities they may have made.

The opposite is not true. Plenty of very wealthy people out there who doesn't show it off in any way whatsoever.


On the other hand, those people who buy something cheapish to mid-range only to trash it completely in a short time must have a reasonable disposable income since that's effectively money down the drain.

I think it's also partially due to a loss in the Kiwi No. 8 mentality. More and more people are unwilling to give it a go themselves, but they still respect (and even envy) the characteristic in other people.

i think definately not! i am an electrical apprentice and have saved my balls off to buy a brand new r6 which i am really stoked with. have had to cut down on going out and getting on the piss etc, but having the bike makes it more then worth it

You could own the latest most expensive Ducati and not own anything else of course or you could own a mediocre bike and a car a house and be keeping a wife with young uns eh?

As for me... I ride a GSX1400 because I just love these bikes and what they can do. BUT... you cannot buy a cheaper bike per CC as a GSX1400 and I thing that covers scooters too BUT I think I earn a reasonable salary.

If you do not earn a reasonable income then, taking into consideration, all other financial out-goings, it is possible that you can only afford a less than desireable bike. On the bright side, at least you have a bike.
If you earn a reasonable income then chances are, you can afford a bike thats unshit.
Whatever you earn, the bike you have/own is the best you can afford given your financial circumstances at any one time. Shit or not, its a bike and you own it.
