Oh, you mean that black single with a squashed muffler I was in the IOM when Malcolm Uphilll did the first 100mph lap on the Thruxton Bonnie, so naturally, I'm a tad biased I think that the Velo pilot was still swinging on the kickstart

I must admit that I don't remember a Thruxton Velo. Must be too young. He He.

I think that I like the new Thruxton Bonnie because it reminds me of the cafe racers I dreamed of when I was too young to ride and couldn't afford when I was. I also have a soft spot for large parallel twins, especially pre 1971 Triumphs. The way the classic bike scene is going over here it's probably cheaper to buy a new Speed Triple or Thruxton Bonnie than a 1970 T120 Bonnie.

I was passing through Palmy today so popped into ANZA and saw a new blue Speedtriple. Looks great from any angle but front on it looks odd to me. Sort of unfinished. Maybe those bug eyes grow on you. I still find the America and Speedmaster the best looking new Triumphs.
ps- Linda, I sold my America. You can't ride two bikes at the same time so one had to go ... until I give in to the urge again

Yep. This one here. Pure unadulterated beauty. Now, let's see the Bonnie **AVERAGE** 100mph for 24 hours non stop!.

    Good evening Ixion

Err.... sorry to disappoint you but from memory, 3 Triumphs averaged over 100 mph for 24 hours at Monthlery in France. I'm pretty sure that they were Thunderbirds and will have a rat through my old mags to see if I can find something about it. You're perfectly correct that a Bonnie didn't do it though. The track would have been awash with oil from one end to the other if my experiences with Triumph pre-unit construction monstrosities is anything to go by.

    Hello Legolas Old Friend

Your nickname had me completely fooled today - I'm sure that Irchester wasn't mentioned on an earlier post. Just got back from a big night ride to test the new seat for the Southern Cross ride - absolutely superb. Will write a decent email tomorrow. Enjoy your day mate!

Heh heh. And fallen off rocker covers. 100mph was a bit of a push for a Tbird (I owned one and the ton was pretty hit or miss). A T110 could have done it though, and probably held together.

Sadly, the 24 hour world record holding Velo (it was actually a Venom Clubman, not a Thruxton, and it did at Montlhery) was destroyed in the terrible fire at the UK National Motorcycle Museum, which also badly damaged the legendary Slippery Sam ( what *was* it with Triumphs and oil!)

Thanks for the pictures of the Thruxton Velo's Ixion, Geoff.
I must admit for looks it leaves the new Thruxton Bonnie in the dust.

I have to come to the defense of the cultural centre and point out that the new Triples arrived and damn well departed into waiting owners hands before anyone could get a good looksie.
I got down to WMCC today to catch the new Sprint though and for those into sports tourers it looks like the top dog. Very cool and surprisingly small.

Wooosh! "What took you so long to get down here, Hitcher?"

"Had to wait for the lift..."

I hope they've got a demo at Chez Trash.

I got to plant my backside on the new Triple - and it seems tiny! Didn't get the chance to throw a leg over the ST, but it looks superb.

This is a link to a report of the show where I saw both of them, with photos of the two bikes "in the flesh"

The riding position on the Triple is very "Sit up and Beg" - and those bars and short wheelbase should mean it handling is really sharp.

If I had the money I'd be tempted by the Triple, but riding in all weathers, I need a bit more protection. If I did any kind of distance on a regular basis, the ST would be the bike I'd be looking towards I think.

(And if I could have a balls-out, stuff any problems as I must be loaded so someone can sort it for me) I'd have a Benelli Tornado.

Hmmm... three-cylinders, wonder why they're all so appealing?
