Spidy Sense - Ignore it at your peril

My spidey senses were working well for me this morning. Traveling down the motorway this morning on my way to Pukekohe I was preparing to overtake. Saw a black stationwagon coming up behind me in my mirror so let him pass; then just before pulling out behind him I decided to do one more check and there was another one (black stationwagon) directly behind him!!! Needless to say I waited a bit longer before taking my turn to pass.

The only explanation I could think of was that the second one was what I saw in my mirror, and the first one was in my blind spot. As he passed me I assumed he was the one I'd seen. You know what they say about assumptions....

Ain't no magic though; Just good scanning, and forward "what if" thinking.

Agreed. As I said...scanning and planning.
However - often there is a 'feeling' that suddenly takes place. Perhaps experience leads to subconsiously recognising subliminal clues, hence the feeling? Who can really know. But when it does kick in, ignore it at your peril.

I get it with cops- dunno why or how- just get the feeling 'time to be on the 100 mark' and sure enough sneaky cops or cameras materialise in seconds or minutes-

Me too - but its not infallible. Started thinking about officers of da law south of Timaru and lo and behold, there he is coming the other way. I work on the principle that cops often travel in pairs about 5km apart so took it easy for a bit - then thought what the hell......

Shortly afterwards I found myself having a chat with a very polite officer in a mufti car......

The biker's sixth sense is very real, and I'd hazard a guess that it has a better than 50/50 strike rate too. But there's plenty of times when it doesn't kick in - then you're buggered, especially if you aren't continually scanning and planning.

What he said. My sixth sense is excellent, and I listen to it all the time. I start to react as soon as that feeling happens. It has saved my bacon lots. It's funny, riding a bike is so much more intuitive than driving a car, your connection to your surrounds (spatialreasoningconnection5.1) is much better. Maybe that's why the sixth sense (or gut feel) works so much better.

Okay, I'm a pedally as well, I've been riding for 30 odd years, coaching, competing. Riding a motorcycle is similar, there are similarities, but the dynamic forces involved make the challenge much harder than a 7kg road bike (for example). My daily commuter bike has enough power to destroy a rear tire in an afternoon, so that needs to be factored in...

And after a lot of years riding motor-bicycles, I'm a lot more open to things like sixth sense, fate etc. There is magic out there, no other explanation for some of the stuff I have seen and experienced...

Whilst I would never rely on the absence of the spidy sense to assume a clear road.....
