Well i consider as a rider who uses my bike for commuting, cars would logically be my biggest threat. I was explaining to my friends mum who has been driving for over 50 years that she has a blind spot and needs to check both mirrors and turn her head before changing lanes!! I don't see a hell of alot of drivers checking their mirrors, let alone turning their heads to check if it's safe to turn or change lanes.

I don't exactly blame them, in my 5 years of being a cager i had no idea there was a blind spot until i learnt it at motorcycle lessons i was taking about how to position yourself on the road. They aren't exactly taught very well.

Blind spots are clearly outlined in the roadcode

You should check the stats on how far from home most accidents occur... Dan was just popping out for a bite when he got nailed.

No, a motorcyclist's biggest threat to themselves is not adequately allowing for, or not noticing, possible dangers that occur around them.

Lose the 'blame the cagers' attitude and you'll survive longer.

My survival depends upon my skills upon handling my bike if i come across a threatening situation. But what puts me in danger is more than often another vehicle on the road (i'm not just saying a cager, i went for a skid down a road once kuz some biker whisked past me, clipped my wing mirror and giving me such a fright in the wet that i flinched. Had my L plate on an everything and only had only 300km of experience behind my belt)

agreed, fault is rarely completely one sided.

Your survival depends not only on your skills of bike handling in dangerous situations, but in your ability to avoid such occurrences altogether. As Katman says, you gotta stop blaming the cagers and other motorists for any near misses, and instead figure out how your actions, or lack thereof put you in that situation. For instance in your example a biker passed and startled you, how bout checking those mirrors a bit more?
