Scooter regoed as moped. Legal?

Hey,

Going to look at a scooter tomorrow, is a PGO t-rex 150 2004 - the buyer has apparently just looked up the rego and discovered it is registered as a 50cc moped - the plate is 20ZTY if anyone wants to look it up on carjam (it is also registered as a piaggio, the italian owner of PGO i believe). On the plus side, this means it never has to have WOF's done, and the rego is cheap as. However What effect will this have on insurance? can i still register it as a PGO t-rex 150 etc etc legally? and B) it has done 5000km, owner says juts had a service + new brake pads, though given it doesn't have to have a WOF, think it's likely to be dodgy?

Really like people's feedback and stuff on this. the guy is also asking for 1700 (though that was before looking at this rego thing). I reckon this is call to get it further down if I still went ahead and bought it...

I assume this has a 150cc engine? Assuming this is the case, then no, you can not legally register it as a 50cc moped.

Any insurance claim could be voided, as the bike is not legally registered. However, you could still take out insurance (but it would be useless).

And I would hate to think of the fine if you got caught by a cop who knew what they were looking at. Invalid rego and no warrant.

I wouldn't touch it unless they got it put right. It sounds like a minefield to correct.

Most illegal. However, as you were not the one who registered it , you could always claim ignorance "'Scusi plz, wot eez theez 'cc' of wheech you speaks?"

A bikie cop would almost certainly ping you on it.

The ORIGINAL registerer committed quite a serious offence since he signed an application and certified the truth thereof. You did not.

But it will bite you sooner or later.

I don't recall reading the fine print last time I did a change of ownership form - but I wouldn't be surprised if you make a declaration that the details on the form are correct.

So the serious of the offence may well transfer to yourself as well.

I suspect that you do need to make such a declaration, but it could only extend to the details insofar as you know them, or could reasonably be expected to know them.

F'instance back in the day it was not uncommon for people to swap the RD250 Yamaha heads and barrels for RD350 ones. Now, if I buy a Yamaha 250 , and, unknown to me (or , at any rate, I'm not letting on), someone in the past has swapped the barrels, I can commit no offence. I don't know it is NOT a 250 :innocence:. I just thought it was a very fast 250.

My MIL bought a car registered as an ambulance - apparently quite common amongst dodgy car dealers, as the rego is way cheap on ambo's.
Can't remember if it was the dealer that she'd bought it off that had done it or in the past further.

as of the 1st of november if you ride a moped over 50km/h you can get a speeding ticket, regardless of the speed limit in that zone.

if you ride your 150 and a cop pulls you up, sees it as registered as a moped (shows up on your rego sticker) then your in a heap of crap, fraudulantly rego'd no warrant, going too fast on a moped..... don't bother with it unless you re-rego it, and if thats the case, why not go with a 250 scoot?

Any more details about this? So if someone were to spend a minute removing a screw that prevents the carb piston from rising too far, so that a 50cc scooter will do an indicated 75 (real 65) making it far safer in 60 zones and gets caught, any idea what the penalty will be?
(" yes your honour, the defendant was travelling at 51k in a 100 zone and must be punished" !) Could be fun.

To be registered as a moped it must produce less than 2 kWs of power and not be capable of exceeding 50kph.

would be like registering a diesel vehicle as a petrol vehicle to also get cheaper rego.

Given A) It's for the girlfriend who B) just got hit on her old scooter which is now written off, C) I would like to make sure it's insured.
Went and saw it today, it's in reasonably good nic, the guy fixes up scooters, any way long story short I'm going to pay 1700, he's going to re-vin it and whatever that needs doing to get up to spec. only thing I could pick was the tires that needed replacing, which he said he will do. So I'm happy :-). It's a PGO T-rex 150 and man the extra 25cc (compared with the girlfriends old lifan 125st) really makes a huge difference!
