    Estimating others' abilities?

sometimes, when riding fast, you assume that the person in front of you is as capable as you, however, recently, i have had a few close calls when this has turned out not to be so.
usually when overtaking on the outside mid corner.
it seems to scare people, but one you get to the straights it a game of full throttle drags!

    what to do?

Ride full speed into the nearest ditch, to show them how it's done.

get a race bike and a bonneville then you dont have passing issues.Be aware some hoons will try pass you on the outside mid corner.

You can easily intimidate others into riding above their ability so as not to look inferior.

Whilst I realise that it is their poor choice, pride can sometimes get the better of us.

Living up to our own Bullshit can be deadly.

    Best avoided.

Better still, what about an updated version of this:

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares? ...He's a mile away and you've got his shoes

Overtaking on corners is alright on the track but I reckon it's a risky move on the road. Who's to say the rider you're overtaking isn't going to change their lines midway to avoid a pothole or something. When I'm cornering I'm concentrating on my lines, not looking in my mirrors to see if some dickwad is deciding to overtake.

I never make assumptions about other peoples abilities. Young carver, you ever overtake me around the outside mid corner, trust me the next time we stop I will give you a small talking to

I generally have really good spacial awareness, and am rarely surprised on my own bike, though have been given a hell fright a few times as a pillion.

Overtaking like that shows small penis skills, getting on a straight and doing a stand up mono past shows fine styles. Though I should of course say as a disclaimer here that wheelies are not big or clever

I'm not clear what the problem is with overtaking people on the outside (corner or no). On the *inside* , of course, ca va etc.

But I've sometimes overtaken people on corners, always going to the outside. Sometimes (more often) been overtaken ditto.

It's not so often that a corner has sufficient visibility to do it, but if there is I can't see a problem?

And if you're on a small bike, it's almost the only way to get past those big crusiers that blast off like mad in the straights then slow down to an awkward and offputting speed at the corners.

Surely, the same might be said of overtaking on the straight?

    Ride with me mate

Like Ixion, I find no problem when overtaking on the outside of the corner as long as you can see all is clear and it's done safely.
If the destination is more important than the journey you aint a biker.

You got a gixxer thou and have trouble overtaking people on the straights!?!?

If you are not sure how people around you ride keep a safe distance.

    Interesting post ...........

Take your time mate. Oddly enough it's not a race!

If you find yourself in the twisties behind the slower rider back off a bit and do not crowd their rear like some anus-loving-arse-bandit - all this will do is rattle them, possibly to the point of making a serious mistake.

I hate it when someone is riding my rear tyre like that.

After a couple of corners they will know you are back there and you can get pass on the next safe and clear opportunity - chances are they'll tuck in to the left for you to make it safer (that's what I'd do).

Then if they catch up with you at the next stop your more likely to get the thumbs up and a 'good skills mate' other than a 'fuck your a ..........'
