I'm actually thinking that since I won't have ever ridden for this length of time, even as a pillion, I might actually have to stop in Taupo or there abouts for the night. I'll have to see when the time arrives... but I want to do it in a day, just so I can say that I did it. I know there are people out there who can do this run in about 5 hours...I'm not ready for that league yet

No disrespect, but I suggest that you would indeed be best to plan on an overnight in Taupo or Rotorua on a bike that small.

I did Auckland-> Wanganui on an SL125 once, and I wouldn't recommend trying to push any further than that. I am sure it can be done, but there comes a point where you're going to be so tired that it's not safe. Bear in mind, doing it in one hit means that you'll be heading into Auckland traffic, at night, when you're utterly exhausted. A small bike is not just slower, thus taking longer. You have to work harder at it to keep the speed up, and concentrate more, because you can't get back up to speed with a quick wrist flick. So it's more tiring.

I have done in 5 hours something, but that was on a 650. And Auckland->Welly->Auckland in one day , but that was on Velo 500, and back in the days when you could go flat out on the open road.

And in June the weather's probably not going to be the best either.Really recommend that overnight stop. Have fun, ride safe

I'm starting to think that maybe it'd be less tiring and therefore quicker if I just got off the bike and pushed the darned thing

I don't think anyone could do it nowdays. I suspect those times were set years ago when you could ride at almost any speed on the open road, and traffic was a lot lighter.

Yes, everyone, please, *always* ride at your own pace. Worst thing you can ever do is go faster than you're comfortable with because of some artificial time target, or because someone else is going faster.

It's about enjoying the ride, not about setting some record.

Secret of really long distance touring is , not very high speeds, but to keep the stops to an absolute minimum. To make up a 10 minute stop every two hours, means increasing your cruising speed by about 20kph

    So it's more like

    Fill up night before
Leave at first light, eat breakfast as you ride.
Fill up at latest you can, grab chokky bars at the servo.
    Lunch in the saddle
Fill up again, grab bags of nuts
Dinner in the saddle, on nuts
Fill up again, hopefully for last time, grab a pie and eat it while you ride (this is tricky folks, hotdogs may be easier)
Destination, get off bike somehow (may need help by this point )
Bed . Crash. You will be *sore* for days.

Try to hold a high but constant speed all the time. Everytime you have to brake or slow down, you lose time having to accelerate backup to speed, use extra fuel (more fuel stops = *BAD* ) and make yourself more tired.

Definitely a good idea SS. When I rode as far as Taupo with Jaz we stayed at Rainbow Backpackers http://www.rainbowlodge.co.nz/ They were Biker friendly and I think it was only $20- each. As I said I'd be keen to go that far with ya depending on what date you're riding up.
My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

    Hahaha! sounds like fun...
and youll prolly find it will be all good, most 125's can sit @ 100k... and Most have like 10L petrol tanks or so returning at least 25k/L so your only looking @ a few fillups along the way (and only costing like $14!)

And Cheers for the ideas on what to do to your mates houses! im still out there doing that stuff Best ive found yet was ripping up a mates lawn doing O's in the old CRX

and then most other days on the CB250

it's only cool when you dye the grass afterwards .... make the doughnut, then bleach the grass in the middle and then paint some eyes and a mouth then you get "" on the front lawn

there's also grafitting houses with water based paints ... friends get home and freak out, you and get the hose and wash it off ... funny shit man ... I recomend a camera at these times.

    Disclamer:
I would like to say that these things only happened to my friends houses who were in the Practical Joke Circle ... no civillians were harmed or mauled (much ) in the making of these antics

I'd find another way into Auckland other than the motorway. Bad enough keeping up with the flow let alone having all and sundry going past. Remember you are going to be tired. I'd find someone to lead you in so you know where're you are going. On the other hand unless you feel you are up to this, but I'd give it a miss. It's a long way and everbody is going to pass you.............I'd give this some serious thought before deciding.

I'm sick of being serious...but I have decided..I am going, but probably not in one day. I might start in the morning and go to Napier. See some peeps up there. Next morning, to Rotorua or Taupo ... mmmm hot pools . Then onwards auckland. Dunno...I realise I'll be on a small bike and not wanting to hold up traffic. I also realise it's a long ride (*giggle* long ride)

But I've been "dared" and I almost never turn down a dare!

Oh yeah...BTW...thanks for the concern for me and other motorists Top notch
