Spraying Panels

Wanting to get some general information about sanding some fairing panels of mineand giving them another coat etc.
Can I use some sort of paint stripper to get the coats of clear stuff off before sanding, or should I just sand all colour off?
How many coats of paint + clear coat should I put on afterward?

I don't bother removing the old paint/clear. For a repaint (i.e. no repairs) I just scuff with 220-280 grit, prime, 320-400 grit, then 3 base coats followed by 3 clear.

I'm assuming for scratches/stone chips etc, just sand back to flush?

Pretty good - it all depends on how good your prep is and how well you can spray.
If you want a mirror finish you can then wet 1200-2000 and then cut/polish but I don't usually bother (not that picky when I'm just going to crash it again ).

For chips I just use putty filler. For bigger stuff you might need to treat as a repair, feather back the edges with 120-180, bog and/or primer filler + guide coat, then as above.

Yeah just what I do, put a good primer on.

dude Im respraying my bike from purple to blue at the moment. ive just got the tank to do now.

basically. sand off the shine (I used 400) then wipe off all dust. spray with de-greaser (actually important) then do a really light coat of primer (use plastic primer) allow to dry repeat 2x or so. never do a heavy coat like I did.

then do the same think again with your paint. if your doing it with spray cans. goto carcolors in albany. they are really close to the motorway. (near turners auctions)

they sell custom made cans of paint for $30 and any color much more cost effective than those smaller cans you can get.

they also sell plastic primer and finish. I highly recommend them (I spent $109 last time I was there)

and always get one more can of color than you think you need. I constantly ran out.

I have seen what hoon does and its a damn good system too. I would say thats your best bet if you do it yourself

Errr I wouldn't use my race bikes as good examples.....I'm so sick of repainting the damn thing that my standards have degraded into "the bare minimum required to look the same colour from grandstand distance away"
Spending hours on a good paint job only to throw it down the track next meet has that effect on people.

Have you got any tips on doing multi colour paint jobs?
Was looking at 2 / 3 colours... black base then possibly purple.

What type of masking tape?
How to sand down the edge of the second colour?
I assume you do the clear coat last?
Should the coloured änd clear paint be a "plastic" paint as well as the primer?
Approximate quantities required for a CBR600 (primer, one colour änd clear)?
Does anyone know any wellington paint suppliers?
Would anyone (in wellington) enjoy giving me a hand to paint the bike in exchange for some beers (on a really tight budget but want to get it looking nice ?

Wellington paint supplier:

Union Hardware in Newtown will make up any colours you need. They are suppliers to panel beaters. They will do custom filled spraycans if you're not using a compressor too.
