I think having a bike convoy probably isn't the best idea without talking to the family...you're quite right.
And having some sort of memorial list or special symbol for "passed on" members seems like a good idea too.
    Just ask the family!

I am very sure if they are interested, you guys can convoy behind the hearse and it would be very touching for the family to know just how much he meant to fellow motorcyclists. Also rather than having a dislike for motorbikes for taking their son, brother, or mate away, when the will see a bike on the road they will remember the send of given to the young man.
Had I met the man or had contact I would prob cross the strait to join in but I really am to busy this coming week.

Wouldn't hurt to ask the family in my opinion, esp. if it is explained the community he belongs in (KB) would like to show their respects.

Also any positive motorcyclist publicity is better for all of us. Hope you can work something out

Shrug, that would be good to do.. unless the parents blame bikes for taking him.. i really hope they dont but imagine the stress/pain they are in, i think someone should definately ask tho

    a minute of silence

Umm..before we do the convey and all the big stuff, how about we all decide a minute of silence and take our time to pray for him together (to whatever god you believe in)…so that we all in NZ can take that minute to pray for him together….just a thought…and of course we can always go to his funeral and show respect

Kinda puts into perspective all the bitching about speed tickets, bad weather, motorbike brands, leather vs cordura etc eh?

Yep, I'll be up for donating funds if needed, flowers for a memorial, or something more permanent if that is the way we decide to go. Would like to know the funeral details too if the family is happy for us to attend.

I only met Sam this morning as he, Jimbo and Garry ( not sure what his nickname is) were deciding whether or not to go up the hill. I had just come back from the 'Fish and found them by Te Marua Golf course having a chat. I convinced them that the weather was great on the other side of the hill and there was sun and good riding to be had.

Needless to say, I feel like a right cock now

Convoy???? Well for sure, if family is up for it, but let it come from someone that knows them eh? It's a bit raw for some people and not always appropriate eh!

Put me down for serious $$ for flowers though. (I'll arrange if required)

Our first priority must be to the living eh! I understand some KB'rs were with Sam until the ambulance left. Thank you. I know this is not a good outcome but that was beyond anyones ability to change. Thank you for being there and doing whatever you could.

This will have a profound effect on people. If you want to talk, reach out through this forum and work it out. It's best eh! Failing that, call me and I'll take you out and get you pissed. Not recommended but sometimes it has to be done eh!

    I dunno...

Certainly a simultaneous set of get togethers and a moment of silence and a few words of rememberance in his memory next sunday is not a bad idea. We could all go someplace afterwards and raise a glass to an absent friend as well...

    Paul N

ps - correct me if I'm wrong but was this not the very weekend a few years back 4 bikers were taken out around there by that tourist????

pps - enjoy those rides folks. Sam would not want you to be glum...

Ohh fuck -Lets quietly contact his family.
Does anybody know his family ??
If nobody is closer to him I'll be prepared to talk to them.
I see the sentiment here re memorial forum but I hope and pray we don't ever need it again.

Mate Gary here. I know how you feel. I tried to turn back twice. the second time at the cafe at the top and he persuaded me to carry on. I only met him for about half an hour on Friday when he met some of us at my work and then today. Gutted, I hope he has gone to a better place.

I would like to see a convoy for the funeral but as everyone else has said it has to be down to the parents. I have to be honest I am not the best at coming up with ideas but am at backing them up or putting them into action. Please who ever is the organiser let me know what I can do. I hope that has come across ok, am not the best with words either.

Aye. I was looking through his profile and thinking 'Surely not... He was online this morning'

I for one will be hunting out a black armband for tomorrow.

Maybe someone should put up a poll on what we want to do as a community. I'm all for a memorial ride and putting some money in for flowers or whatever may be appropriate.

By the way there are organisations that can help those who are feeling really affected by Sam's passing away, Victim Support http://www.victimsupport.org.nz/ourservices.htm or Skylight (more for young people) http://www.skylight.org.nz/page.php?c=833

    Take care of each other.

I too would love to see a memorial ride for Sam, and a catch up/drink for Sam some time soon. Let us all clear our heads before we decide.

    RIP Sam

Thankyou to Jimbo and anyone else who was at the scene to help Sam. I hope you are safe.
