Hey guys, just wondering if anyone could give me some pointers where to start.
what i want to do is get a car charger for my ipod, and convert it to charge my ipod while on the mighty hog.

Do i want to just find out how much power the car charger takes in and puts out and then it might be possible to just wire it straight to the bike?

The ipod charger plugs into a lighter socket, so all you have to do is direct wire a fused lighter socket to the bike. If you're really keen you can make it look factory fitted.
Power consumption is negligible.

sounds easy enough

so yea, guess ill just get the right fuse and a lighter socket and hide it under or around the seat and just straight to the battery ?

What Lou said - don't worry about the power consumption. Just wire the charger directly to the hog's battery. Don't forget an inliine fuse.

The other option is to fit a cigarette lighter socket to the bike.

Under the seat is usually the best place for an cig lighter socket, cos they aint usually waterproof. dick smith & repco sell them with a plastic case so they don't need to be fitted, some with buldog clips and some with a male attachment on the other end. Get a decent one though, cos when riding the plug can slip out, some electrical tape can solve that though

However you can get the BMW style sockets with a sprung cap on them, they are fine to be exposed.

I have both on my beemer. The GPS plugs in to the lighter socket under the seat and cd/mp3 player in to the accessory socket. I just made up a cable to go from accessory socket to pocket and in the pocket was the adapter and cd player. Also really useful for cellphone & charger in the tank bag. both easy to fit.

ditto. I charge cell phone and laptop on occasion from the BMW (well, a man's got to get his KB fix even out in the country. Wonderful thing CDMA)

I installed a neat mini socket bought from Repco on the top part of my fairing. It had a sprung waterproof cap on it. Used to run my radar detector and kettle (yes I said kettle, when stationary of course) from it. I even borrowed a mates electrically heated jacket and plugged it in. Niiiiice n cosy.

Beware - if you're going to plug in things that draw a lot of current (kettles, heated jackets etc) keep the engine running. You can fork up your battery if you suck too much juice from it if the engine isn't running. And flatten it of course.
