14th and 13th. Outside top 10 again with 12th on the day overall and a small lift to 11th overall in the championship on 78 points. However Cairoli is on 214 points!

    Press release:

Spanish MX GP mixed misfortunes for Coppins.

17000 spectators lined the spectacular Bellpuig hillside circuit in Spain this weekend to witness the 5th round of the FIM MX World championship series. Factory Aprilia Racer, Josh Coppins, experienced a weekend of mixed misfortunes but still managed to climb one position higher in the championship standings and now sits in 11th overall.

The New Zealander’s first moto did not get off to a good start as a first turn pile-up saw Lizzard at the bottom of the heap as the pack disappeared into the distance. He remounted and gave chase to the field putting in some strong consistant lap times and making good passes as he climbed the standings. Coppins was able to take advantage of a fallen Steve Ramon one corner from the chequered flag to secure 14th spot.

A much better start in race 2 had Coppins placed in the top ten. Carrying good lines and setting consistent lap times, ‘Lizzard’ looked set for a great result when technical gremlins effected his machine. Coppins nursed home a broken fuel pump to finish 13th for 12th overall.

“I’m a bit gutted about the second moto. “ admitted Coppins “The team and I have been working hard on putting two strong results together but it did not happen this weekend. We have improved our starts which has been an important goal as it is hard to come through the pack with such a strong field. Hopefully we’ll have these technical issues ironed out for the US GP. I’m looking for to racing in Glen Helen”.

Coppins will be afforded a week’s break before heading to Sacramento, California for round 6 on 29-30 May.

    Townley is racing ...

    This should be interesting!

2004 World MX2 Champion Ben Townley is really looking forward to the coming weeks. After finishing with 2-1 results in last weekend’s National 4-stroke race at the Glen Helen circuit the New Zealander felt his speed was still there and he can start to build on what will be an important year for him.

Now fully fit after recovering from six weeks off the bike with a groin injury Townley knows his condition isn't what is should be, but he wants to go top five at the opening round of the AMA Nationals this coming weekend and then go to the Unites States Grand Prix on May 30 with a real chance to race with the likes of Antonio Cairoli and Max Nagl in the MX1 class.

Townley also likes the layout of the Glen Helen circuit and expects many of the Grand Prix riders to enjoy the new FIM World Motocross Championship facility.

"The layout is nice, some really nice rollers (waves) and a huge jump out the back of the track, of course the big uphill and downhill sections which are really special for this circuit and a few other interesting aspects. It’s a nice circuit for sure."

His performance in a small national race last weekend at the Glen Helen circuit gave him some confidence as he scored some good results despite suffering a flat tyre.

"I was leading the first race last weekend and got a flat tyre, and finished 6th or something, then I won the second moto easy. I felt good, it was a good hit-out."

While Townley remains confident that his race speed will be good, he is a little worried about how his condition will be as the race enters the important period.

"I had 6 weeks off the bike and wanted to do those three Grand Prix's at the start of the year, but it didn't happen. I have only been back in America for a short time, and I know my race condition isn't going to be perfect, but I expect to run with the top GP guys and I like to think I can be top five. My speed is good. The question is going to be how I feel at the tail end of the races, how my condition will play out. I know I am fast enough, that isn't a question, but I don't know how long I will be able to run at the top pace."

Having not raced a Grand Prix for five years Townley knows that he will have his work cut out for him against the likes of Cairoli, Nagl and some of the other leading MX1 riders, but he also knows that in top shape, and with a little luck he will run side by side with the leading Grand Prix riders and that will only bring more interest to what is already going to be a very exciting United States Grand Prix.

More than interesting should be freckin good!
It will be really interesting seeing how quick he is comparing his running second in that race in the AMA to where he might finish amongst this set of riders!
Bloody hell I can't wait for the torrent!

    Holy shit!!
Well I guess that answers my question on where the AMA riders rank against the world champ MX1 riders! Go Ben Townley!!!
Looks like he blew the Ktm's away LOL!!

And DK well all I can say is respect to him there is nothing that proves how good you are than actual results, still 2nd in the world, thats pretty awesome I reckon!

Can someone copy and paste the results?

Mixed weekend for Coppins in USGP

As the sole factory Aprilia entry, Josh Coppins headed off to Glen Helen Raceway in the USA this past weekend to take part in the impressive USGP.

High winds caused for the usual Saturday ‘free’ practice to be cancelled, but by mid day the winds had settled enough to get the program underway. Josh quickly got to grips with the new circuit and posted 12th place in the qualifying race.

In the first moto on Sunday Coppins suffered a bent radiator when a mistake in the opening laps took him down. With high temperatures the lack of engine cooling left ‘Lizzard’ with no option but to retire from the race.

Looking to salvage vital points for the weekend Coppins was quick out the gates in moto 2 and rounded out the opening lap just outside the top 10. Racing hard throughout ‘Lizzard’ put on an impressive charge ending the 35 minute and 2 lap race in 9th position.

‘Not finishing the first moto was a real shame because I felt good on the bike. That showed in the 2nd race and I was pumped to get a good result in that. The team had to change the whole engine between the heats, so we were pushed on time, but they did a good job in the end. The development of this bike is a huge task but we continue to improve every week so that is promising.” Commented Coppins.

I was wondering from the start if that is why he is there?? Smart move by aprillia and good for Josh to still have a factory ride when he porably wouldn't have got one??
