    We want more cops

Yeah, strange as it may seem. For years now we (local communiuty) have been trying to get general duties cops assigned to Panmure. Without success because the Area Commander always says he hasn't any to spare.

Now I discover at the weekend that Paeroa, with a population (I'm told) of 4000 , has 12 permanent coppers. WTF. We want a couple of them. How come a little place like Paeroa (looks dead law abiding too) gets so many and we can't get any.

I was tempted to lure a couple out with doughnuts and stow them in the boot (brilliant plan, fell through only because the boot was totally full with Mrs Ixion's luggage. - we were going away for two whole nights so the amount of packing required filled the boot and the back seat. I put my overnight bag under my seat. Never have understood that )

Mr Robinson is going to get a bleat about this for sure.

Its because Paeroa cops look after a big area and within that area a fairly big population, also some of those cops will be HP for sure.

Have a go at your local MP, he will sought it out

I thought it was because Paeroa is the gateway to some of the best (ahem) growing areas in NZ...

yeah thats also correct, call it one of the gateways to the best province in New Zealand, the police are the areas border control. Its easy to spot a outsider and they generally get nabbed, trouble is so many trying to get into our province needs lots of cops

the paeroa staff roster will not include HP - they are based out of hamilton. for a 7 day 24 hour coverage (on call) - with a STU, YAS and CIB contingent, i challenge you to build a roster that uses less than this strength:

    1 sgt (day shift)
    1 det (day shift)
    1 yas/community cop (day shift)
    2 STU cops
    7 frontline cops

there are 21 frontline shifts left to fill during the week. (early/late/rdo). at least friday and saturday nights are 2 person shifts. one person has to be on call every night. can't roster any one person more than 10 x 8hr shifts in a fortnight.

I can't believe Panmure doesn't have a good supply of cops,it had plenty when I was growing up in the area, the Traffic Cops were based there too.As a little boy I was locked in an ''interview room'' for hours at the Panmure station and then questioned at length by big scary men,my partners in crime getting the same treatment...then taken home by police car - scared the livin shit outa me!

Don't tell me GI has become an up market trendy area that doesn't need a Cop presence....

oop - forgot - each person gets 20 days annual, plus 13 extras for public holidays/shift work leave etc. leave accumulation is not allowed. call outs are accumulated as TOIL - lets say 160 hrs a year. with 7 frontline cops, that's 370 shifts leave per year that has to be absorbed. there are 260 working days in a year, but counting an early shift, late shift and RDO in every day (365), with double shifting fri and sat, there are a minimum of 1200 shifts to fill in a year.

don't forget - training, court, sick leave, relieving at other stations etc.

No police station there anymore. They sold it off years ago. No police either (not general duties anyway, just speed cameras)

And what pray did your Mum say when you were brought home by the law, with guilt written all over you (bet you can still vivdly remember it !) ? And how many did Dad give you when he found out ?
