another nasty accident

Last night my sons best mate landed himself in hospital on his way home from work on his nsr, looked down for a couple of secs, just long enough for a car to stop right in front of him leaving him nowhere to go, he swerved to avoid hitting the back of the car, but unfortunately it was turning, , so he T-boned into the side of it, smashing his teeth, pulverising his leg and many other injuries, bike is a write-off and he's lucky he was going relatively slow.
Poor kid was just starting his apprenticeship and working two jobs, had just got his bike back from the shop yesterday too.
Apparently the first thing he said out of surgery was "I'm going to get another bike" I somehow doubt his mother was impressed!

Take care out there people! It only takes a second of inattention to stuff up your life!

Sorry to hear that. Putting brave face on it, at least he's alive (and no "horrible long term " type injuries ?)

Pity about the bike.

Pity too, that my guess is he won't be back into biking. Hard for parents to go along with another bike after a scare like that.

This is one reason why I do so *HATE* to see young bikers crashing. You can never tell how it's going to end up, and even if you don't seriously hurt yourself, it makes it very hard to keep the support of parents/spouses etc. I know that if I had a bad crash I'd be hard put to it not to give in to Mrs Ixions wishes to "give it away".

but i truly belieave that this young man will be a better rider for this crash!

the more he crashed now and lives to tell the tales the better he will be !!!

i hope that he WILL get a new bike and he goes on to bigger and better things.

Sorry to hear about the acco.
Easy to see why the average age of a motorcyclist in NZ is forty. When parents see the bike as the problem.
Why can people not see, that although the consequence of inattention on a bike is a bit worse for the rider, there is less chance of us killing other motorists. Bikes are far from the problem, we just need a better rider education system than the current regeme.
My opinion only. Tell me to bugger off if you want.

Doesn't take much time, even at low speeds, to get past the point of "no return". Years ago when I was an impoverished varsity student I was on my way to a holiday job, not going very fast - traffic ahead of me and an approaching intersection. I knew I was in the wrong lane (straight ahead/right turn) because someone may wish to turn and would have to stop and wait for oncoming traffic so I looked over to the left-hand lane to see how safe it would be to change lanes, saw something weird painted on the side of a truck, had a brief "WTF" moment then looked back in time to see I should already have stopped if I wanted to avoid hitting the car that was stopped in front of me.

Needless to say I ploughed into the arse of it and did a fair bit of damage to the bike - minor damage to the car and managed to nut myself on the instrument panel.

I didn't wound myself anywhere near as badly as toads' son's best mate, fortunately.

I can well understand how a moment's lapse can foul things up - especially for a relatively inexperienced rider who's not as swift at performing the checks as a more experienced rider. Checking instrumentation, rear view mirror, where you're going to go etc can use up valuable time if you're not practised at it.

Just an update, he's had 2 ops so far on the leg, had rods etc put in and then had to return to theatre to have the leg split in order to relieve the unbelievable swelling, the other driver involved it turns out was a learner car driver, and very possibly failed to indicate and more importantly failed to check his rear view mirror and identify whether anyone was behind him.
I am gutted for this young man as he was really motivated towards his chosen career, and it is unlikely he will have a "speedy"recovery.
I'm going to go an visit him today and I'll pass on your your good wishes etc, and yes Andy I am "still here" but only just lol!

You say this guy had just got his bike back from the shop - was it in there due to another accident or just having some work done on it?

I may not be popular, but I thought that running into someone in front of you is always YOUR fault and saying the other driver was a learner driver and may not have indicated or checked their mirror does not change the fact that your son's friend ran up the rear end of them and therefore he was obviously too close to be able to stop safely. Even if this driver had decided not to turn because there was something behind them (like that is going to happen!), it is likely this guy would still have run into them.

I'm sorry he's hurt as I'm sorry for anyone involved in an accident, whether it is their fault or not, but I think he has to take some of the blame here.
