short story: back wheel locked up at 110kph

long story: after todays 22 ride when everyone was in Hamilitron I figured Id go up SH1 cos I was broke and hungry, all was well except just past the bombay hills service park, I was in the fast lane. 2 cars close behind, around 110 - 105 Kph. the backwheel just locks. my thought process imediately stopped and subconsious took over. back wheel went nuts and at one point was about 40 degree's to the road. as you might expect, I shat my pants instantly.

I managed (some how) to slow down to a stopping speed without dropping. I wanted kinda to signal the cars behind me but I needed both hands to keep the bike from going spaz and having a hump with the road markings. got it (very wobblingly) to the right hand side of the road. the second car behind me called me a bastard so I double duced him and then swore a bit. when I had a clear head I started it again and moved over to the left hand side verge so I could have a look.

absoulutley nothing. I rolled it. nothing. I had another look and played with my rear brake a bit. nothing. so off I went the last 50k home no problems.

So.. What do I do know? after Ive cleaned all the shit of my seat and gear of course.

Sounds like she seized mate.

i seized my MVX about three times before it locked up for good.

Being new to it, I'd stand there scratching my head looking at the bike for a few minutes, think "one more try", give it a kick and away she'd go. 'Till the next time.

I'd be pulling the barrel off this weekend and checking it out.

If it's nothing, a base gasget and set of rings is cheap.

If it's seized, a piston, re-bore and gaskets is cheaper than it fucking out in a big way and rooting the barrel/crank'bearings.

ok mate first calm down .
several possible causes of rear wheel lock up.
Most likely unfortunately would be a seizure -Did ya pull the clutch in when it happened??
Another possibility is something flicked up into your chain and jammed against the sprocket causing a lockup. or ditto between wheel and swingarm.
Back brake pads might have overheated and seized on the disk.

yeah. theres a few explanations. dont know how to find out what it was though. at a guess from the way it felt and behaved, I would have guessed something flicked up. It did seem to get better at the end but of course I anchored on the clutch and brakes to 'if im onna crash ill do it slower than 110k' kindof manouvere.

It has sortof seized before. when I forgot to keep oil in it. but there was heaps of oil there today.

ok. so most importantly. how do I open it up and have a look. and what am I looking for?

Four bolts a the base of the barrel. Remove the carb and exhaust first.

Pull the barrel off and have a look at the piston and inside of the bore. If it's partially locked up, you'll see some pretty heavy wear.

They're cheap as chips to rebuild though.

Unless you really carefully cleaned it all up and it wasn't tooooo bad to start with there's a good possibility that even with everything else being good it will sieze again. The damage has been done.

Welcome to the cwonderful world of two strokes!. You seized the motor. Happens. Is why two smoker riders always cover the clutch. Pull clutch in as soon as you feel the lock up .

By the time you stop motor has cooled a bit and freed the seizure.

Like others said, pull the barrel, see what your piston looks like. Clean it up with emery cloth and brasso if it's not too bad (can't do that though if you've smeared the rings.

It's just part of the exciting panorama of two stroke motorcycling.

Another but much rarer possibility is a gearbox seizure. Only Jawa's aeem to favour those, but they're nasty because there's no way to free them, you have to just ride out the skid.

Don't panic , you'll experience worse and survive to tell the tale.

AND
Suzuki titans ( twin cylinder air coolled ) had a leak in g/box ...and ran a bearing ...hard off the lights in 3 rd ,,she locks ...no didnt save it ....Cut my little pinky ...
now I know when the death scream of a bearing is heard one should ......add oil

Its coming out of a corner and the power goes off ...that sinking feeling that its going to be expensive

To be honest. I dont know.
everything ran on instinct when it happened. I get the occasional flashback kinda thing in my head which goes 'aringdingdingdingdingdingdingKADOMDOM ssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) and I gag. the shhhh noise is the air in my helmet and the wheel sliding. I figure the KADOMDOM noise is the seizure.

I sent a bit of a 'im not happy' email to colemans because I assumed that if they took it in for a service when there was engine problems. they might open the engine up (esp since I was charged $100 more than quoted)

but alas no, thats not the case apparently. After having a long chat to one of the guys there. he offered to rip it open for $70 +gst which apparently is quite good considering the time it would take to do that.

so its there now. Im currently riding around in another RGV150 thats done twice the K's but runs a whole bucketload better than mine :/

so Ill keep you posted.

That happened to me on the farm bike, was the gearbox taking a holiday, not a good buzz hooning down a rough farm track at the time. Must have been one jump too many.

with all the ppl in auckland that r on here i am finding it funny that no one said bring it round mate ill have a look at it and the with the leavel of bikers here you would be abel to say yip or no and he would be on his way that is how it is were im from i hate shops that charge and then say hay we can get more too

I did that once in the middle of peak hour traffic on the motorway. I blocked traffice for only a few seconds with asshole cagers behind me honking. It was so embarrasing.
