    Well yeah, that's true.
I used to walk only a km to primary school, then cycle about 5 or 6 to intermediate, then about 7 or so to high school.
Then I got my first bike.
Then I wrecked it, and had to walk.

Then I got a better one.

Anyway - I digress. We've got kids / parents so soft where we live, that some of them drive their kids 50m (no, I'm NOT kidding!!) to the school.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Easy. Saddlebags. Two kids, left and right. Done.

Well if this wasn't NZ I say take them both on the bike, I've seen families of 7 putting along quite happly on a dunger old 125 or similar. I say we just need to get the laws changed

That's because they could get Michaeled on their way to school.

Back in grandad's heyday, there would be at least five crammed on and in his bike and sidecar - grandad, grandma, mum, my uncle and at least 1 of my aunts. They rode everywhere - all over the King Country on gravel roads - when grandad was working in the sawmills.

You'd probably not get away with quite as many, these days.

Wish I did own a decent bike with side-car - it'd mean that we could take the boys on the Toy Runs and other events now instead of waiting for them to get "big enough".

As to getting stirred up about this poll, I have my own sense of identity and don't give a hoot whether others would classify me as a "real biker" or not. I know that I prefer bikes to cars for a large number of reasons, and I also know that cars have their uses; I've been called insane by others as I've set off on journeys on a variety of different bikes under various conditions; I've ridden in adverse weather from metal-bits-get-brittle-and-snap-off cold to torrential rain and gale force winds (when getting hit by branches or, worse, power lines was a real risk); I rode my TS125 everywhere with my right arm in a cast and I've stood in solitude by my bike at around 2am in the middle of nowhere having a quiet cigarette - miles had gone by and more miles to come before I reach my destination - revelling in the feeling of being alone and free, apart from all humankind. It's what I feel and care about inside that matters to me.

I don't judge who is a "real biker" as we all have our own needs and those needs vary from person to person; time to time. If a person is taking on the traffic on two wheels, they have my respect - be they on a scooter or a Harley. If a person is taking on the traffic on two wheels in the freezing cold or pissing rain, then they have even more of my respect - but I would not deem someone who doesn't "not a true biker" or a "wannabe" - I do not know them, I do not know what reason or combination of reasons they may have for laying-up the bike for winter. I'll let others decide what labels they wish to apply to themselves, if any.
    Motorbike Camping for the win!

I admire your dedication. Sounds like your GF is a "keeper”. My wife was dedicated like this when we met, got me interested in bikes. She couldn't understand why I would spend so much on cages, as these were only something to get you from A to B. Well, times changed, I ended up getting bike, and she a car. I asked her how she'd class herself these days. The term Latté Biker came up. So, could you add an option , "I'm a wanna be Latté Biker" and add 2 votes.
