I hope Sam will be ok, but in my opinion ANY accident that involves people should have police called.

There was a case here last year where a lady hit a man, he walked off saying he was ok and died not long after due to a brain herniation secondary to a supradural haematoma. Funny, she got off everything as police didn't attend and he didn't get himself checked out at the hospital.

I also know a doctor who walked for 10 months on a broken leg. She didn't notice it. Sometimes big injuries don't show until Xrays are taken.

So get yourself checked out if you're in any accident. Better safe than sorry.

[QUOTE=placidfemme]Well I just spoke to the bike shop... and they say the bike only has cosmetic damage (farings, lights, idicators, mirror e.t.c) and they are sorting out a quote at the moment. QUOTE]

Hmm. Just be prepared for something sizeable all the same, even though you won't be paying for it. The second guy who knocked my bike over (and all the FXR really did was fall over after being shunted from behind) faced a bill for $1235 ... although that did include $400 odd to have a stone indentation removed from the tank.

Yeah, I'm aware of the damage and the price tags that come with it. Last year in Nov/Dec Sam dropped her bike in a solo accident, it was the day after she got her license, and her longest ride before this incident was just around the block, and we were riding up to Riverhead, and as we got into Albany Village, it started drizzling, and she braked too hard and dropped the bike, she couldn't have been going faster than 20kph, but the damage cost a lot.

The right front faring was smashed up, the right handle bar was bent, the brake lever was bent, the right mirror broke off, the windscreen was broken and the pipe was damaged... no actually engine/frame damage... so again the cosmetic repair bill was $1500, and then came down to $1200 in the end... when they found the pipe wasn't damaged just the pipe guard that goes over the pipes on FXR's.

The bike shop still havn't faxed me the quote, so I'm not sure what the bill will be this time...

Definitely report it to the cops, and don't worry too much if it isn't within the 24 hour period, I don't think they'd get too antsy about it. For insurance purposes the company usually requires the accident to be reported as well.

I got hit by a cyclist once - weird accident that one! I was waiting to turn right into a one-way street and was giving way to a cyclist coming towards me - who then turned left into the street without indicating. I turned in after him and it was a sort of Y shaped street - I was going into the left part of the Y so just carried on, and as I got level with the cyclist, he turned as he was heading right - and smacked into the passenger door on the car! He managed to stay upright, but bent his handlebars. After calling him everything under the sun and then asking if he was okay (he was profusely apologising at this stage, a very polite Samoan guy who kept saying "sorry lady, didn't see you"), we went our separate ways and I reported it to the police. No damage to the car and the bike was rideable and the rider unhurt, but I thought I better. When I told the cop the full story he said "Samoan, eh? And he was okay? Well, better luck next time!" I couldn't believe it!

Always pays to involve the police in accidents where there is the slightest injury as if any charges are laid in the future, this could have some bearing on the case.
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!

    (sarcasim) nice, a racist cop...

Yeah I've asked Sam to call the cops and report it, just incase this lady backs out of her word and doesn't pay for the repairs... Sam said she would call the lady and then see what her response is... and then decide wether to call the cops or not. I can't call the cops as I wasn't there and wasn't envolved, the things that link me to the accident is obviously that Sam is my partner and that the FXR is half mine and in both our names...

I can't call Sam again until 1pm (her lunch brake) so I won't know until then if she's called the cops or not... hopefully she decides to do so.

good she's not hurt too bad and it's good your taking care of business... hope all turns out well.

We get alot of idiots running red lights in Tauranga... I time the lights (when in my ute) wait until just before the light turns green (split second) and try to ram the person who ran the red light... I've been very close on a few occasions... I'm dont want to kill them... just scare the crap outta them, But I am prepared to hit them (maybe Im the idiot?)
I've seen other people do the same thing and Its very funny to watch

I know... it's amazing how many people go through the orange light... you'd swear it says in the road code "when you see a orange light speed up and try to be the last person through before it turns red".

The real problem is that people don't handle coming up to a green light properly.

If I come up toward a light, and it's been green a while, then I start slowing down (unless I know it's one of those with a real long green phase). Cos common sense says that it's probably going to turn orange before you get to it.

But most plonkers don't; they see "green light" and put their foot hard down, to try to blast through before it changes. So when it does turn orange as they approach it , they're going too fast to stop.

I reckon they should abolish the amber phase. Go straight from green to red BUT have a 3 or 4 second delay in the system before the other direction goes green

This red light running is one reason why I don't filter much anymore. If you filter you need to get away fast on the green. But so often that's too dangerous because of some fwit coming through on his red.

Come on Ixion.... You don't filter because you are on a BMW.... BMW riders don't do anything risky. But I bet you've filtered on lil ratty tho eh?

Well, the Whale is usually a bit *wide* for filtering. .Though when I do try it's surprising how keen drivers are to move over and let me through.Wonder why

Yeah Li'l Ratty is pretty good at filtering.

Tis lonly filtering now, Was a time that filtering in the city you could reckon to have at least a few other bikes up front with you.

Incidentally, lately I've seen a few lights with a green painted strip about 6 ft wide across the FRONT of the lights - ie from left hand of left lane to right hand of right lane. With apicture of a pedally on it. Are we allowed to use those ? Seems stupid providing them for pedallys and not bikes, given that pedallys it would be pretty much suicide trying to use 'em, they'd never get away fast enought to avoid being mown down.

Maybe thats the idea.... Less cyclists on the road then. Local councils seem against anything that reduces traffic congestion.

I must admit that I do that sometimes... see a green and speed up a little to get through before it turns... but if it's yellow then I always try to stop... I've had people honk at me from behind for not going through a yellow, I usually look at them in my mirrors, smile and wave... then they just think I'm an idiot who thinks I know them... lol I've even had one guy wave back

As for Sam, I spoke to her and she said she isn't going to call the cops. I've told her the con's of not doing so, but she thinks the lady was very nice so she'll wait to see what happens...

lol yeah, I'm expecting the bill to be no less than $500 and no more than $1000. I think the lady is hoping/expecting it to be about $500. But she has confirmed to Sam that she will pay the bill as she doesn't want the cops or insurance guys involved... which to me is a big warning sign....

Ix, you're a nana's nana - and so am I. If the light is green when I am a reasonable distance away, I assume it will change orange before I can get through it so I slow down when I get closer.
