yes horribly dangerous. I had a quick skim over the austrailian study on them (posted somewhere here recently) and it looks like it is possible to put the other additions ontop of the existing ones. oh well, at least on a motorway Id guess its safer to just not crash? oh wait... hah silly me

The cable fences drag the car to a stop with sudden friction and there is less liklihood of a head on. Small comfort.

I see the friction thing, but in places it is only a single line of cheese graters, I reckon give me a commodore and I could flip it right over the bloody things aint that high or wide compared to the concrete motorway dividers!

Would be a very luck and weird impacet that caused a car to flick to the other side of the road on impacting a concrete barrier, would be interesting to see how many times this has happened on the Auckland Motorway network.

i hate to say it but its pernament, and id say your probably right sAsLEX.
i work in roading and i havent meet many people who think there a good idea. the only reason they put them down is cost.

the factors are that you need to maintain a minimum lane width for the speed environment and also make the road appear to be wide enough to cages. if they put down a concrete barrier it utimatly means that the road needs to be another meter wider over using a wire type "cheese grater" barrier, which at a rough cost (constructed) at about $40 - $50 per m2 is a fair bit of money.

also what makes these even worse is the fact that if something hits them they will deflect about 2m into the other lane before the wires pull you back in, and that is only if the vehicle hits square on... it gets a lot worse if it dosen't.

my advice... dont hit em, even in a cage cause if there is something coming the other way 9 times out of ten you will probably take them out too. they are only designed to keep a vehicle on one side off the road, not to prevent all head on collisions.

The scary thing about them - apart from the cheese grater factor.

Is that if hit straight on we (our bodies) may flip over into the other lane.

As I have said in other posts,I have it on good authority that in France the bikers refused to register their bikes until the govt banned wire rope barriers.
Anyone for a mass protest?
Or shall we just go back to Baaing in our paddocks?

I would rather take my chances of being flipped over into the other lane than get sliced in half. But seriously, those things are dangerous shit, take extra care around them.

Get 100 bikes and it works. Plod can't do much with so many, just tell us to move on. Which we do, after the press have got their photos. They'll go for it becos so many bikes is photogenic. Then press ask "What's it all about" .Doesn't work with just a few bikes, got to have the numbers.

Do some publicity type stuff. Every bike brings a cardboard cross for example, We stick them against the wires (photo photo photo) , "We're putting them there in advance becuase Transits cost cutting is going to kill motorcyclists" (Probably better gimmicks, that one just came to mind).

Just pick a quiet time so we don't piss of lotsa motorists.

The easiest solution to the problem is to be more aware of the outcome, and just think about not wiping out. They have had them down Wellington way for a few years now, and people don't get too stressed over it.

id be there. don't want to sit by quietly and just try to ignore it. it wont go away on its own. better do something now it maybe me or someone i know. and all in the way of cost.
what is the price on safety.

although i would preffer driver education to be a hell of a lot higher, than the replacement of barriers.

prevent the accident rather than minimise it.

I'd like them to stop handing out licences to people when they get off the plane!

If you want to be noticed you will need 1000 or more!
A block on the bridge heading in at 8am will get you on TV.
Now you will get, "A small and powerless group want YOU THE TAX PAYER to spend more keeping them safe"
I'd be there, but I dont think it would work.
