just a quick question...
for those of you who have taken the basic skills test and/or lessons... which instructor did you use? any comments? would you recommend to a friend?

Hi
We (girlygirl & I) used John Wright and he was brilliant, albeit a bit excentric.
Would definitely recommend him to family friends.
Hater of haters since 2012
John wright is the one, he helped put some of the road code together so he knows his stuff.

Opperates in a warehouse in manukau last I knew.
He has an add in the roadcode that I have.
I have known him for some years now.

I went to passrite and did the basic handling skills course thing, not just the test. It was a day thing where they got you to ride around cones and basically just introduce you to riding. I thought it was pretty good, I'd guess they would be ok for just a basic handling skills test too.
There are a number of threads on this topic, but it seems there isn't much of a consensus as to which is the best place. Take a look through a few of the links, maybe they'll be helpful.

My partner and I both used "Doug Swanson" who does his basic skills test and lessons at Akoranga Campus on Sundays.Originally Posted by Colemans

I know a few other people from this site have used his services too and I've never heard a negative comment regarding him. We reccomend him to everyone who asks regarding this.
His contact number is: 09 416-5096
Doug also provides a GN250 for people who don't have a bike.

afternoons if that is any good to you Phone RideSafe 021 639743.
Can provide bikes, etc if needed - Cost of Test is $50 - lessons to get up to
the level required are $25 an hour, bike hire included
If you say either "I can" or "I can't" your correct.
Hmm wonder if Lee can teach me how to ride a bike??

Yep.. me too with "Doug Swanson" awesome guy. And nice learning location too.
I really DON'T like the car park Passrite does there course in. Its got a massive drain in the middle and usually the ground is full of dirt and oil, good test for skills. But scary for beginners. And NO run off area.
newbie since August 2004....
VTR250 (retired) / SV650S (Fw:Keystone19) / GSXR750(given up) / CB400(traded for 919) / CB900 Hornet / CBR954 (traded) / CBR1100XX (sold) / TuonoR (sold) / CB900 Hornet / NC700X / MTS1200 / XR250
I used Doug and found him encouraging, he was happy to be flexible with times too so I could get my licence after work on a weekday.
Good to see so many people have positive feedback about Doug Swanson... I always recommend him![]()

I think they were just CB's, which is a good idea. CBRs are too peaky for under 30 kp/h riding.Originally Posted by girlygirl
I liked John's course. He was patient and encouraging with a myself and a less confident rider.
