Well, different. Don't know about magically.

Motorways (and State Highways) are specifcally under the control of Transit - tis the law says so. They say we can't ride in them .

Non motorway buslanes are under the control of LTSA now (was not so until recently). They say we can .

Other roads are under the contrrol of local authorities (eg City council). Until recently they also had the non motorway buslanes. Some did, some didn't.

    bus drivers have special licenses.

what about a requirement to do a defensive driving course or something to do bus lanes.

also bus's are bigger and cars care about hitting them
I saw one change lanes today without indicating. car in front of me screeches to a halt. (of course I cassually hit indicater and avoid car by lane splitting cos im so fucking cool (pt) )
I only posted this because of the global economic crisis

LTNZ don't actually control any roads. It's Transit for State highways and local bodies for the rest.
The interesting case will be for toll roads. Will private enterprise be able to build a road and control it? Like the pprivate forestry roads, no speed limits
Or is this the reason for the law change to allow the Police to prosecute in "off-road" situations.

I emailed transit about this a few weeks ago when I decided I'd buy a bike, they said that they control the motorways and local bodies control the rest. The reason given for no bikes in the bus lanes in 100k zones is because you might get hit by busses and that cars might use the on and off ramps without checking and hit bikes. I used to cycle courier ('95 to '98) and the bike couriers were pushing for bikes to be speed limited to 80 in the bus lanes (like busses are supposed to volantarily do now) and used to commute daily from whenuapai and your right in saying that no-one in transit must ride cos from cycling, being pillion and now riding you are so much more aware of where everyone is and might be wether they are in or outside of the law. I've always told other cyclists "you don't have dings on bikes" they scratch their paint and you lose your leg no matter who's in the wrong.

Just an aside here guys. Quite frankly I dont want to ride in the motorway bus lanes anymore.Have a look at the tyres on a cop bike and you'll see why. I did a 4 month stint where for about 1km I was riding down the bus lane.
I picked up more crap in my tyres than in the 5 years before
