Corner practicing

Hey!

Can anyone recommend a good place to go to do cornering practice in Auckland? I'm meaning on the road, somewhere twisty but not TOOOO twisty and difficult.

Only places I could think of was west aucks, but that's a bit far from me in Takapuna. I was hoping for somewhere north-ish if possible?

Use East Coast Road, Northcross to Silverdale.
You can then even return via SH17. At Silverdale cross the motorway and head through Dairy Flat and down to Albany.

Why don't you just zip up to Warkworth and then cut through a nice and very lightly used route through to SH16 (left at the lights through the industrial bit). You come out about 10km North of Kaukap and then you can cut back down to Dairy Flat. All good and nothing too testing.

clevedon, kawakawa, pukekohe, hunua, kaiaua out south-east

16, riverhead, old albany high-way (now between mega centre? and kumeu), waimauku, etc etc etc. north-west
north-east...? old north road? up to silverdale?

waitakere can be fun, but wet roads, leaf litter and sh*t make it... well, scary fun.
piha, karekare, scenic road etc. (it's not that far from northshore now, either. head north from taka and cut across upper harbour highway... puts you right into westie-gate. north at roundabout for kuumu, south for waitakere)

Why do you want to practice cornering?

If you want to get used to leaning & looking where your going try doing figure 8's in a car park somewhere. You can put a lot more focus into your technique if your not worrying about traffic.

Disregard this if your trying to get your knee down

Thanks guys, Defo gonna have to check out all those spots! Some really nice roads there, and some of them quietish so not too much traffic!

Plan being to do some longer rides after carpark stuff to get used to that, with the aim being to get used to country roads as I prob would be using my bike more for weekend rides then daily commuting. So nice long rides etc.

So yeah, I guess I mean for when I'm trying to put my knee down haha

I would that do that route when I have a couple of hours free and the day is to good not to...Ridge road is good for alot of sweepers, stop off at the Dotcom Mansion (cos you can) theres any amount of good riding spots around the Riverhead/Coatsville area.

Thanks Maha, was actually plotting it out on google maps last night. Looks like a nice long one. The road connecting through to SH16 looks nice and quiet, there's no logging trucks or anything?

Woodcocks road?...you may find the odd stock truck (being all farms etc) but in general, theres bugger all traffic.
Just use you mirrors, and if you holding up any cars, indicate left (where safe to do so) and wave them on...no harm in that.

waitakere can be fun, but wet roads, leaf litter and sh*t make it... well, scary fun. <<<< Once you are COMFORTABLE, these are roads you'll need to approach. Early on leaf litter, wet roads with algae/moss etc on them can give some highly 'interesting' traction effects. Once you have learnt and are comfortable with changing line mid corner, approach, or exit line... you'll find these sorts of roads a good challenge to learn on... However caveat emptor: Even the most skilled can catch themselves out if not riding at a speed appropriate for the conditions.....

Aye, if you want to come out west to poke around some of the roads in Waitakere, let me know. I live about 2 minutes from the start of say Scenic drive and spend most of my riding time practicing up in the waitaks. There's a few good roads up here for practicing.

Stay clear of scenic drive though until you've got a lot more experience. The road surface is ruddy awful, theres often gravel and shit on the road, the curves can turn in abruptly, and it's FILLED with bloody tourists who stop or proceed to slow from 60-->20 for no discernible reason. A lot of people have wrecked up on scenic, I'd leave it alone. Especially since you'll be forever stuck in traffic most of the time anyway. It's a busy road.

If you want a good road that's slow to practice corners on, Huia road is the exit at the round about just before scenic drive. It's beautifully paved, its mostly 50-75kph roads with 30kph corners. Doesn't really go anywhere particularly amazing so it's very quiet, and there are a few nice beaches along the way you can stop at if you feel the need.

TBH the Waitaks scare the shyt out of me! My friend spun out in his car on scenic drive swerving around a tourist who had just STOPPED IN THE LANE AFTER A CORNER. Because a possum was crossing the road. -_-

I'll give the rides up north a go first as I live in Takapuna, but I'll give Huia Road a go after that though, I know it pretty well as one of my friends live down that way
