    Stator test and repair in NZ

    Hi Guys

    I am new to NZ and have brought some bikes with me from the UK.

    The problem is I have come to get one of my bikes vinned and there is a problem it. I have done some tests and its looking like the source coil/stator could be to blame. Does anyone know of a test and repair facility in NZ?

    Not too far from you Monksie - in Hamilton. Ken Cairns Electrical Services, 11 Leonard Place, Dinsdale. 07 847 4233.

    They rebuilt my Blackbird stator to a higher spec than the Honda OEM item. That was 2 years ago when an OEM 'bird stator was ~$800, an aftermarket one from the UK ~$300 and Ken Cairns charged me $208 delivered.

    I think the effing great burn hole in one part of the windings gave me a hint that there might be a problem.

    All joking aside, he does a lot of work for the classic bike people, not to mention that just about every Honda dealer in NZ uses him. It was a dealer in the south island close to where I struck trouble that recommended him.

    To the extent of rebuilding the stator yourself as DangerousBastard did

    This guy does them and has repaired a few for members on here, he turned mine around ex Chch within a week

    With the engine stopped, unplug the stator from the regulator and test ohms from any stator wire to the bikes frame/ground. You should get an open circuit, or a very very high resistance - many megohms.. If there is any resistance at all, you have a stator coil fault to ground. Soon this will destroy your regulator/rectifier if you run the engine.

    If the above test passes, then with the stator unplugged start the engine and run it at a high idle. Swap the meter to a Volts AC scale larger than 100V and check volts from any stator wire to any other stator wire. They should all be within a few volts of each other and around 20-30V AC. If you rev the engine to 5,000rpm you should get 50-70V AC.

    If this test passes, then test AC Volts from any stator wire to the bikes frame/ground. The reading should be zero.

    If all these tests pass, and a visual check of the stator confirms the windings to bright and shiny, then I would say it was fine.

    If (as stated in the original post) the problem is in the source coil, all those tests are rather pointless.

    Thanks Steve for the info but the problem lies with the source coil not the charging coils.

    I have contacted Ken Cairns who is hooking me up with a new meter to check the peak voltage when the bike drops it spark. Hopfully this will proove the stator to be at fault and not Transistorised ignition box.

    If it's a stator that's leaking to earth just go onto evil-bay and search for the part you want from a wrecker.

    I found a 40 year old CB750 stator for about $30 odd USD and a similar amount for postage. Versus $500 NZD for a rewind. Take the easy route!
