Thanks TwoSeven, the one I rode today was a bit peaky in first (can't remember at what revs though, maybe 5000ish).

I also rode a CBR600RR & a CBR600F4i today, the F4i was too much like my current bike and the RR just didn't feel right.

I had though about the 636 but haven't yet riden one, and can't afford to shell out for a brand new one.

They flat out refused a warranty claim on the R1 because "No one else has had a problem with one" so he sold the bike, told them to jam it and is now a very happy K5 Gixxer pilot.
More fool him for bending over and taking it.

Is anyone actually going to answer the question? As you know, I have just bought the 1000GTR, which is a carby model. Even tho there wasn't an option of a F.I model, I've wondered myself what the difference would be if any. Is F.I starting to become standard on most bikes these days (especially larger capacity)?

you don't need to shell out for a new one. You can get an '03 for around 10k or so, a little more and it'll be better looked after.. but they aren't too expensive, and the 03/04 is the pick of the crop so far..

Apart from the technical stuff, FI engines using less fuel and run much leaner (at least they should) to optimize fuel to air ratio. Bear in mind some countries have emission regulations enforced and getting very grumpy if you don’t follow them!!! much easier to throw in a new (leaner) fuel mapping instead of rejetting the whole thing.

Have you ever ridden a stock ducati? Eg. ST3 or 4 shocker

Basically it doesn’t matter if you run a carb or FI engine, if you want to do a proper set up you need some equipment and knowledge.

True. But that is mainly because FI is easier to get a pass on California emission rules. You can set them up to be very lean JUST at the conditions that the emission test is run at . That's harder with carbs.

Back in the 70's (or thereabouts) some manufacturers like Aston Martin and Triumph (car Triumph) used to use carbs on their sporty models , and FI on a detuned version for the States, because with FI they could pass the emission tests.

FI is very nice until it goes wrong. Then it's very horrible. Carbs is a pain, but when they go wrong human beings can fix them.

OK....So by the sounds of it, it's not a big deal either way.

    Thanks all.
