    Cop Karma

I rode into uni from work today, and it was a harrowing experience. I'm a learner and i'm always on the m'way. I also have to be in the lab till midnight most nights so generally the L plate isn't an option.

First I got stopped at a checkpoint at the start of Sandringham Rd, where the good-natured officer asked me if my bike had 'everything on it that it should'. I gambled he wouldn't ask for my licence and responded with a hearty 'yep' despite the absence of an L-plate. He thanked me and wished me a good day. Phew.

Keep riding, get to Symonds street. Indulge myself a little over the motorway bridge (before K rd). Pulled up at the grafton bridge lights and noticed the cop with the laser hiding behind the traffic light junction box. Damn. Busted. Sure enough, I get waved down after the lights go green. Two cops this time. 69km/h, not too bad... but then the moment came. "Can I see your licence please?". I hand over the bright blue card. He walks round to the rear of the bike. I'm just waiting for my wallet to start crying as all my money flies away.

"You must be pretty happy riding a bike with the gas prices being so high". Has he realized? Is he toying with me? Is he just being nice? Well, i'm sure as hell not gonna mention it. He must have wondered why I was so happy about my $120 fine.

Personally I think he must have known, so this is my thank-you to that cop. May someone do you a good turn for saving me all that money!

Even a hardened anti-cop like me has to admit you struck a good one. May the lord provide more of them.

The frustrating thing is, that when a decent cop is noticed , there is no way to give him a boost for it. One can hardly write to his bosses praising him, that would probably land him deep in the shit.

Other people who do an especially good job, go the extra mile, are particularly friendly and helpful, etc , one can write to their bosses (or the head of the company, or whatever) and give them some good rep. Done it more than a few times. Which hopefully gets them a pat on the back, remembered at bonus time etc. Obviously, can't do that with a nice cop.

I wish there was a Decent Plods Anonymous or something. There have been a few occasions when a cop has been a good chap - not just in the sense of letting me off something, but helping in the event of break down or off, assisting in giving directions to the lost and bewildered, just generally being a decent sort.

Phew! Sounds like you've already dealt with all the things I worry about in one day!

(Is that your Hyosung that parks on Alfred St by University? Nice to connect the odd KBer with some of the bikes I wander past daily at 'school'...)

I am wondering myself how long it will be before my L(ooser) plate meets with an accident and has a wee rest under my seat...

Hey Phurrball, yeah it's probably me! I usually park down alfred street, and I haven't seen any other comets there. Nice bandit! I'll keep an eye out for it.

I started out with the best of intentions with my L plate. I figured people would be more forgiving if I screwed up... but I very quickly found my feet with the bike and now I think it'd have a negative effect, as in "what does that bloody learner think he's doing??" as I thread up the inside of a red light queue. That combined with the lunacy of the 70k limit and the 10pm curfew have ensured it a permanent place under the pillion seat.

Am an L plater too...if you work past your 10pm times often, apply for an exemption through AA, I got one for shift work...am always telling the bar staff, etc in this area to do the same...many don't give a toss though and just can't be bothered...

Ive been really lucky with the law. I got stopped a while ago on an old CBX750 I own that I decided to just take out for a run. Just to keep the old girl ticking. No rego no wof. I knew what I was doing and knew the risk I was taking. I got stopped at a check point and thought... shit this is gonna cost me... I explained that I was just out to give it a short run as it hasnt been used for a while. The cop looked over the bike (which was all up to wof standard) and said "well turn around and take it home""Youve given her a run".
    I was stoked!
2 weeks later got stopped again at a check point on my RF and the SAME cop stopped me, looked at my license and recognised my name and mentioned the CBX from a couple of weeks ago. Asked what I was going to do with it, sell it or keep it etc.
A bloody good law enforcer. He could see that I wasnt trouble (hee hee) and was really looking for dangerous and unsafe vehicles.
May I meet many more of these guys

Ive also come across some really awesome pigs. (Officers)
Its sad to know that their colleages have ruined their reputations, e-mail with porn. And rape etc.
Just about became a sworn officer myself. Dont think i could handle the public though.

Got ya licence on ya mate? Yeah.. the reason i pulled you over was... ( Hey! is that a tinny in the ash-tray mate. ) I'll have to confiscate that aye.

You can, just don't mention the fact that he let you off xx ticket or marked your speed down by xx. Just say he had a great attitude and fully embodied the values you expect in the Police (or other such wank).

Trust me with all the negative publicity around, the 99% of good cops would really appreciate a bit of feed back.

i havent had bad cop karma - yet *TOUCH WOOD*

the times i've run into them and been questioned it was checkpoints or random pull wave downs.

Never wore an L plate but i was always polite etc and didnt have anything wrong with my bike (reg'd and wof'd). Got told by one, "im supposed to be giving you a $400 fine for not having your L plate, but everything is in order and you arent being stupid so just take it easy otherwise you might get picked up by an asshole and they might'nt be so nice!"

Other times were breath tests at 11.30pm and later... three times in a week. Never failed the test and never got asked for licence, the last time the cop said just go through, i cant be bothered wasting your time (taking helmet off etc) - i think he recognised me

Back in the day when i was young and stupid, hang on that was yesterday. But more than a few years ago i was ripping around and around the basin in welly on my ZXR250 only to get pulled, know how fast you were going, er i dunno being honest i said somewhere around 70-80kph (fool should've never said anything), learners, no L plate, after 10pm, man i was well fucked, the cop was real cool (older fella) he handed me a ticket for cant memba exactly but somewhere around the $680, fuck me, i'm gonna have to quit school and work full time pushing trolleys.
Anyhow a couple of weeks later thinking i wouldnt be able to afford that new 21 inch TV to match my new PS1 as i'd have to pay the fines i got a letter from the police, saying due to a technical error on the officers behalf the fine had been waived and no due action will be taken........ Looking at the ticket closely he had put my birth date and then put my birth date again for date offence happened, to this day i'm sure he did it on purpose to scare the shit out of me, and man i tell ya it worked alright, the thought of not getting me TV was (words cant discribe).

Cool cop in my books, not a bad tactic to do either, gets the point across without the loss of ya TV. Cause id be fucked if i know what i was going to do with a PS1 and no TV.

The only wanker cop i've dealt with was when me and a few mates were in a 1.2 starlet going round a roundabout at 15kph with the biscut tyres howling full noise, man he was a cock, think he had a bad night or something, never got a ticket, but my mates dad who's a senoir sarg said there's been a few complaints about him, next thing i knew he'd (the cop) had a head on in his WRX round Eastbourne and died, wqasn't his fault apperantly.
