Take it to the cops.Ask them to investigate a stalker pretending to be police.
If it's the *555ers that wrote it why would they say that it was a car?
If it is real, you could write in saying that it can't have been you because you don't own a car with that licence plate. If they further the whole thing fess up but they should be able to get that right!

IF the car/bike is registered in your name you MUST supply details as to who was driving/riding at the time mentioned.
Failure to do so? - up to $10,000 fine.
Sure, listen to all the 'site'lawyers if it IS a phoney and get rid of the letter - but throw it out at your peril if it is genuine.!!
And of course it will be 'easy' to tell if it IS genuine, right?

but saying that, be careful. If they've got the arseache with you for whatever reason, they know where you live now, since they delivered it by hand. Don't want to make you paranoid, but just be warey of stuff
Go on - ignore it. You know you want to.
Better still, copy it and post it in the letterbox of one of your friends,![]()
Write back and tell them like fuck you would ever be seen riding as slow as 130. And ask how they got your number plate as you are sure your wheelie was so high the plate was completely hidden. Also mention the driver of the car having a beer in his hand.
Not difficult to tell if it is genuine.
Take it to the police and ask them.
If it is not they should be quite interested.
My brother has recieved this kind of thing in the past on 2 occasions. Once was a letter the other was a visit. Neither time did he get prosecuted as such, but I am sure he was a marked man from then on. Maybe it was just chance but he used to get heaps of tickets for a while after that
Its good to see that the bush lawyers are hard at work again!Originally Posted by SpeedMedic
You have been served a section 118 notice to the owner or hirer of a vehicle to give information as to identity of driver or passenger. You have 14 days to comply or risk being prosecuted and face a fine of up to $10,000.
The use of the word "car" is incorrect and should have been "vehicle" however this is unlikely to have any effect on a subsequent prosecution.
As I found out, the police don't have to have the vehicle brand and type correct, so long as they have the speed you travelled and the name of the driver they can give you a ticketOriginally Posted by scooterboynz
My guess is that your "friend" wasn't home when they called to deliver it and they simply left it in the envelope. Sometimes mail goes missing, blows away in the wind etc. If the letter wasn't actually served on you..... your friend, as in handed to you....... your friend by the constable or delivered by registered mail then I would suggest it has not been served correctly. You and your friend can choose how best you should take that piece of information.Originally Posted by scooterboynz
They don't have any file number on them and aren't usually on a police letter head. The letter is normally handed to the person and is signed by the serving constable.Originally Posted by bugjuice
That's a bit weird because if a cop had seen you allegedly doing this speed, they would have taken off after you at the time if possible or visited you later that day. As for the 'estimated 130' - what would they charge you with if you confessed that it was you and you did think you had been speeding? Would you get done for 130, or would you get a dangerous driving or careless use charge?
I don't think it is anything to do with *555 because they do take weeks to be sent out, and they just say that a motorist complained that you were doing xyz and you should take this as a warning and drive safely, etc. I got a letter once that said I was doing 118kms on a certain road that I'd never heard of and my speed had been recorded by some road safety community initiative. I checked the map and found it was a side road off SH1 just north of Otaki so they must have been sitting in that road and logged my speed as I drove past on SH1. No action was forthcoming, it was just a note to let me know I had been speeding! Total waste of time, I hadn't seen them so it didn't modify my behaviour at the time, and no penalty, so why bother?
I think the best option would be to treat it as genuine and just advise the local station (by letter so you will have a record of it in case anything further happens) that you have a motorcycle of that registration but it is not a car and that you have no recollection of this particular incident but you would doubt you were travelling at that speed. I figure if you were going to be ticketed you would have been by now, and if they can't prove who was the 'driver' and what speed this person was doing, I can't see how you could be charged with anything. Even if you admit you were on the bike that day, how can they prove you were doing that speed? Unless it was witnessed by a cop - because I know from experience that if a cop says you were doing xyz, then as far as the courts are concerned, you WERE! I was told that a cop of 20 years experience was a better judge of my actions than I was!
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!
Might be an interesting trip to the post office to see if anybodies paid the $2.75 or whatever it is to look your details up from your rego details?

This happened to one of my mates a few months back, what he did was on the form they sent to fill out he put a big black cross through the front, fliped it over and on the back wrote down that his bike hadnt been riden by anyone else, and that if it was his bike seen poping a 180k wheelie in a 50 zone at that time to prove it. this was 3 months back and he hasnt heard a thing since. our conclusion was they only had part of his licence plate and just wanted him to cave and spill his guts. they come over and delivered it in person tho, and tried to get him to confess then and there, then 3 days latter the letter followed. my advice is dont give them what they are asking for, send the letter back with a denial, and untill they drag you to court with evedence just keep denying, it will waste a heap of police time(at least they wont be out issueing tickets) and with any luck like was the case with him they will give up....IMO if they new for a fact it was you or your bike they would have come over to see you with a ticket..no question
