Trials and Tribulations of a Learner on Auckland Motorways

Got a few parts cosmetically damaged but did need replacing. Decided that visiting Action and Atomic Bike Wreckers in Barrys Point Road would be a good bet.

However, I have only been on the North Shore once with a mate, and also coming back from rides. Knew Barrys Point Rd was on the right once I got over the bridge.

Over the bridge, looking for a turn to the right. Saw the road... didn't see a turn... saw a bridge right in front of me... realised I should have gone left 10 seconds ago...

No worries, I can get off next left and go back on the motorway (I have no idea how to take a back route to Barrys Point Rd). Turn around... looking for an exit to the left... there's the bike shops... NO EXIT

OK, have no knowledge of how to go north from inside the city... how to get back. Well, the only thing for sure is the roundabouts over the motorway

I ended up going back to Greenlane east only to turn around and go back over the bridge... again... This time I make bloody sure to turn off correctly.

I hate the auckland motorways, but practice makes perfect

    Cool

Gremlin - When you have a spare day mate...
Contact me if you want to and I will show you a few ways over there and back again.... as you didnt need to go all the way back to Greenlane...lol...
you only needed to come off at Shelly Beach Rd exit...

Easy to get lost over the shore... I only go there when I need to...
but know how to get back on if I make the wrong exit..

Jeez mate it's a good thing they don't have tolls on the bridge anymore as you would owe them big time!!! Glad you found the right place in the end though!!!

I know exactly what you're talking about gremlin, the city gives me the shits when trying to find my way around. But I'm very easily confused.

Luckily, Riff Raff's normaly sitting in the passenger seat of the cage, barking out directions.

You'll get the gist of it soon enuf Gremlin. You need to get out and do some more exploring of the city you're living in!

I've always thought it bloody silly that you can turn off to Barry's Pt. Rd. going north, but not going south. Caught me a few times, and I lived on the Shore for 25 years - saw them build that motorway.

What you could have done was exit at Onewa Rd, southbound, just before the bridge, and then double back onto the northbound. Not quite sure if it's legal (the turn is on a strange angle) , but heaps of people (including cops) do it.

Or , you CAN , if you overshoot the Barry's Pt. Rd turnoff , you can just ride up the grass bank between the main motorway and the turnoff exit loop. Now that's DEFINATELY got to be illegal. Has been done though

They're building the offramp to Barry's Pt Rd going south at present aren't they?

Not sure, they're doing a lot of earthmoving there, but now that I don't live on the Shore any more I'm not really up with what's happening

At least that turn off has always been the same, mostly - it's when they go and change things that I get confused, specially if you've been in this city a long time.I've been up one way streets, plowed through dozens of lights I didn't know existed and even roads they had blocked off to become dead ends,suposedly....It's a sad world when you can't even find your way around the suburb you grew up in.

Not always. Used to be the motorway ended at Barry's Pt. And the bridge just before , that goes over the present motorway wasn't there, the motorway just went straight into Esmonde Rd. Back then you could turn right out of Esmonde Rd into Barry's Pt Rd.

Folk were a bit pissed off when they extended the motorway up to Northcote Rd, because they chopped Smith's Bush in half (and destroyed a big bit of it, where the motorway is now) ; and cos you could no longer get from Esmonde Rd to Barry's Pt.

We used to ride our bikes off road where the Warehouse or whatever is now - it was a big hunk of land with tracks everywhere. It was vacant for years and I still saw guys riding there decades after I stopped do that.
