While I was comming back down SH1 after a lovely loop ride on Saturday (Wgtn - PN - Napier - Taupo - Turangi - Bulls - Wgtn, 860 km) I noticed that heaps of cars were driving with only their park lights on.

It's bothered me before but the sun was low and the light was particularly bad.

Park lights are for parking and should ONLY be used for parking.

If you decide that the light is bad enough for lights then turn them on proper. Tell your mates workmates, boyfriends, girlfriends and wives. "Park lights are for parking - not driving".

I think it's more that they're concerned that it will flatten their battery

Headlights wear out much faster than park lights, and if they can see OK, then people can see them.

Funny - when I sat my license (just after the invention of the internal combustion engine), one of the questions was along the lines of "When is it OK to drive with your park lights on?" The answer was, of course, "Never - park lights are for parking".
So this morning, in the Waikato fog, I see 3 cops with radars broadcasting radiation for miles totally ignoring the tossers with either park lights on, or no bloody lights on at all (visiblity 50 metres max).

Just a bot of info but in the states they are called driving lights, and you use them at times when there is just barely enough light to see or in foggy conditions. Just makes it so you can be seen without blinding others.

That's precicly what they are for,parking...you can leave them on for hours,even overnight without draining the battery...so long as it's a good battery.Some Euro cars (MKIII Cortinas even!) when you park you put the offside indicator on,when you remove the key and walk away the park lights on that side are on....means you can park on anyside of the street (legal in UK) in left or right hand drive countries.

That they are just friggin idiots who think they are 10 feet tall and bullet proof. Twilight is the worst time of day for visability, we should all treat it accordingly.

If you park in an area without street lighting, park lights are handy for alerting others that you've parked there. Sadly most modern cars now make this annoying buzzing sound when you leave the park lights on. Park lights left on all night have no noticeable impact on a healthy battery.
Ha-ha buzzers and all, but people still leave their main lights on in car parks.

During the twilight hours, most people who switch them on only do this because then they can see their instrument panel. Maybe manufactures should make those lights only switch on with the main lights. How ever, have you checked out the cost of headlights these days? Used to cost $7-10 but now they're $30 for the same unit.

You talking bulbs...or sealed beam units?? I think most (cages) are seperate bulb nowadays. I don't know the price of a bulb but it varies to hell depending on type of gas/wattage etc. The light unit itself can be $1500.00 or more
