This is probably not the place to mention the thousands of miles I've ridden without any "gear". Not even a helmet.

Wonderful, the way that modern youff believe in the magical properties of "gear"; and the inferiority and sub humanness of anyone who doesn't subscribe to the "gear" religion.

yeah but... the 'modern youff' are travelling at twice the speeds and have twice the traffic/idiots to cope with than when i first started driving...and i aint even 40 yet
personally i dont give a shit what anyone else wears on a bike...natural selection will work its magic there... i know what makes me feel a little more secure, and if it is having decent gear then it works for me

I know that some are of the opinion that "no gear" or "little gear" is your choice but, the thing is it's not just you that's affected if you come off and get seriously hurt and I tend to think it's always best to be prepared for the worse case scenario. I mean if nothing else b/c cagers can be so unpredicatable I think wearing as little gear as possible is just asking for trouble, ya know Murphy's Law and all that. And I know from personal experience that as I was sliding down the Motorway on my belly the other week, I was definitely glad that I had all my gear on.
My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

As sarge said, "Stupidity is its own cure". I remember the day I was riding down the road in Blenheim and the mudgaurd fell off and jammed the front wheel. I was only wearing school shorts and top. The result was me with a broken collar bone, missing a fair bit of skin and ruining a brand new uniform. The CG was fine, leaked a bit of petrol but thats it. (Pity they don't build them bikes like they used to)

I would never ride in a uniform again

I ride offroad every day on farm bikes with no helmet. Buuuut. No way on the road. My face is ugly nuff without munting it further on a piece of bitumen!

I once heard an (older) American motorcyclist say that "the only thing dumber than the law allowing people helmetless, is those who choose to do so."

    So here we go again

Am I my brother’s keeper? What right do we have to impose our ideals upon an individual?

But what if my brother was a moron?
(He wasn’t, he always wore gear, but we’ll leave him out for the point of the philosophical discussion).

I’ve crashed racing & have helmets with deep scratches along the face shield/chin. I’ve ground leather, damaged gloves boots & gotten bruises & broken bones even through armour. Bear in mind that I race buckets at speeds usually far less than most people travel on the motorway & in fact a lot of the time has been at suburban road speeds on comparatively safe smooth tracks. Not chipseal with cars, gutters & lampposts.

I have little respect for anyone who may question that this gear helps.

Question: This bruiser guy is going to punch you a few times. Leathers & helmet or jeans & T-shirt? Thought so.

The only time legislation has helped to lower the road-toll was the introduction of compulsory seatbelts. Car drivers chose not to wear them before, but forcing them to really did help. I am uneasy with this (& the connotations ), but the average person must be a bit dim or just thinks it won't happen to them.

When I was involved in rider training we used to ask:
If you know you were going to be involved in an accident today, what would you wear? Students would list all the usual.

The point is that most accidents happen within something like 10k from home on short trips, so saving your leathers for touring or sport riding is missing the point. Also most injuries these days involve lower body. Largely I suggest, as many don’t wear more than a jacket & helmet.

So am I my brother’s keeper?

Well I think I should yell in his ear a bit!
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
