Sounds like the cow was taking her revenge for all the motorcyclists that wear leathers.

Hey Velox - what a freaky experience. I've seen a car hit a cow before and the damage to the car was nasty; cows are pretty solid things! So glad both you and the bike came out ok! Agree with the many posts about getting the farmer to get the bike fixed. If he's a mate maybe when you tell him about it he'll offer to asisst you and the Jade in some way. If it were me I'd feel so terrible I'd be falling over myself to put it right.
Hope your out riding again soon!

    Cool

    shitting cows.....

Thank goodness you are ok.... and the bike is repairable.

Yep the others are correct - the farmer is liable to pay for all damages done to your bike... and replacement of your helmet and gears if they were damaged.

It don't matter if he is a friend.. it was his cows out on the road, therefore he pays up.

No, silly. Obviously not a gorilla. An orang-utan , naturally. Where else would a pedant be most happy than in an infinitely large library. (Just DON'T use the 'M' word)

    Jeez Louise!

Finally found something to slow you down a touch.

Glad to hear you're okay and the Jade lives to fight another day.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

To confirm what the others are saying

As quoted from a law firm website :

    WANDERING STOCK

Since the introduction of the Animals Law Reform Act 1989 (“the Act”) road users have been able to sue farmers and seek compensation for damage caused by wandering stock.

The Act introduces a statutory definition of negligence. It provides that farmers must take reasonable care to see that damage is not caused by stock straying on to the road. The Act stipulates that when considering whether reasonable care has been taken matters that should be considered include:

    1. The common local practice – in relation to fencing and other measures to prevent animals from straying on to roads.
    2. The measures taken to warn road users of stock on the road.

Therefore the measures a farmer must take are dependent on the locality and general farming practices in their area. If stock do stray on to the road and the farmer does not take reasonable care, the farmer could be liable for any resulting loss.

    Hopefully that helps
To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods

Up until a few years ago you would be liable for damage to stock, even if wandering through open gates or neglected fences - guess you can blame the stupid Goverment for the changes there that put the liability on the farmer.
Cows are atracted to motorbike because when the get shifted to more feed...a farmer turns up on a motorbike.... so cow thinks....oooohhh....thats the food noise [motorbike engine/exhuast noise] and rocks on up...

yes farmer is liable....has been since the 70's....law requires that fences are of a standard to "keep stock in" .... and 99% of farmers have public liability insurance....so he will most likly be insured for a claim...is the farmer aware that u hit the stock?

Shit, I'm glad you're gonna be ok.
Even though the farmer is a neighbour & friend it is as the others said, get them to pay for your bike & helmet & gear, they should be insured for it. It can be done in a way that you can still be neighbourly.
And make sure they fence the cows in properly before someone gets seriously hurt/killed.
He can't be wanting his stock to be damaged /killed either.

    All the best
