    New rider, what's the score?

My girlfriend wants to learn to ride, what does she need to do first (training wise) and what size bike can she have?

Sorry, I'm just an ignorant pom!

She is not allowed anything bigger than a 250. I would suggest booking her for a course at a riders training school.

licence restrictions means a max of 250cc bike until she obtains her full. Go to the AA and fill out a scratch n win, and also do the compulsary basic handling test. They'll be able to tell you who's near by. Then you get your Learners. Stick with that for 12-18 months, then you're on a restricted. Stick on that a wee while longer (can't remember how long), then she can do her full.

    More info here.

If she needs to LEARN to ride (as opposed to just passing tests), then either John Wright (john wright - motorcycle instructor -ph 025 227 5766) or Lee Rusty (KB member ph 021 NEW RIDER).

Mr Wright will provide a motorcycle for training and passing the basic Handling Skills test (which is required before a learner's licence will be issued). Not sure about Mr Rusty - you may have to provide the bike.

Both Mr Wright and Mr Rusty can also take her for the basic handling Skills test, if she already knows how to ride and just needs the certificate.

Bear in mind that a learner (and restricted) is limited to a maximum of 250cc. At all times.

.....remembering to ALWAYS 'give way' to the right rule. I still have trouble with this after 2 years.

    Cheers (another ignorant Pom)
