    RGV250

I'm sure this has been done before, but my search was fruitless.

    I'm looking at this rgv250.

Previous I was only looking at 4 strokes but this caught my eye. I'm keen to take it for a test ride, but how wise would it be for a student to own such a bike? I ride like a nana (no seriously), though I've been told it'll be a bitch for maintanence none the less.

A wise decision or should I aim for a 4 stroke in hopes of staving off rebuilds and all sorts of fun things like that, that are associated with two strokes?

To really 'use' an RGV (I've owned one) you really need to be on them all the time, ie not ride like a nana. And yes they are more expensive to maintain and run. Stick with a four stroke, you wont regret it.

If you get a two stroke you'll end up with another lemon mate, if you thrased it then sweet but not nanna riding. Go four or go home

Not so much that it's a two stroke, as it's a racing two stroke (race replica).

Yep, maintainence will be high. As will petrol and oil bills (allow 3 to 4 times what 250cc four strokes cost, bearing in mind that you'll ride it harder) And as others have said, you can't nana ride them. Fanging it all the way.

Not a good bike for commuting. Great fun , if you can afford to keep one as a weekend "go crazy" bike, and have another, four stroke, bike for using the week.

A TOURING two stroke now (GT250, RD250) that's another matter. Not many of them left though.

not the ideal commuter, but a good handling bike, this is the model that RGV's get good - the banana Arm model

Yes running costs wont be cheap, but it will be as quick as a 400 4 stroke

Cos it's fun. And cos they are no fun if you don't . It's a race replica two smoker. All or nothing.

    Howdy,

RGV's a fun little bike, I owned 2 while I was a student, didn't have any problems at all with them..... except for the untamed power in the little beasts that occasionally spat me off in the wet. Beware of the power bands in them! like a jack in the box if your a learner.

I found the FZR 250 was a little more tame, easier to zip in & out of the traffic with out riding the clutch with no surprises. Don't have to get a new one either, 1988 & up will do fine

I wouldn't mind a 3ln fzr. But if you do a search for some posts of mine you'll see why I'm none too fond of the 2kr.

Speaking of which, there is a 3ln at Mt Eden with like 10,000kms for just over $4k. Seems like a good deal if anyone is looking for one. EDIT, I have been informed that said fzr is a piece of shit, don't buy it.

duds, look for a older gixxa twofiddy.....i was looking at a couple, and rode one, i think they are a wee bit under powered [i thought that with the fzr/cbr/zxr] but i did have a gpz4hundy and now i have a 650....but the gixxa seems to be cheaper than the alternative bikes and still not a bad toy

    Nice new avatar ducati.

The Rgv has just had a rebuild so I can't see it needing any work done for some time.

I've ridden a gsxr250 a while ago. Seemed alright. Nothing special, but that was a long time ago. Still nothing much on tardme.

Don't do it, you'll get called a farm bike rider, pay heaps in gas, and oil.
Then one day you will stand next to the boik and think, shit! I like the smell and the sound! And then theres the rubber band. ooo the rubber band on a 250 2smoke.

Next step, you become the worst - an Ixion
